Anthropology of Albanian insurgencies after 1981

Presented work analyzes quantitatively and qualitatively at the micro-level the activities of insurgent groups and organizations that were operating among Albanians in Kosovo, Macedonia and South Serbia during 1981-2010, particularly in the form of terrorism and guerrilla warfare. Major attention is paid to the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). Based on it, the work presents an empirically measurable theoretical model of social mobilization into violent collective action. The model, whose basic goal is to explain the so-called free-rider problem in a high-risk collective action, consists of four theses: 1. Violence helps maintain the internal cohesion of the clandestine group, change public attitudes, attract new recruits and convince potential donors of the meaningfulness of financial contributions. 2. The problem of free-riding in collective action is weakened when the threat posed by the state and opportunities became balanced, and participants will get the subjective feeling of safety among large numbers of others. 3. Open insurgencies do not spread evenly across the country, but in geographical clusters around selected epicenters. 4. Carnival and Schizophreny of the Most Landscape.

Resume The goal of my thesis is to familiarize readers with Schizophrenia, a term used by local people to describe a traumatic social phenomenon which is to be found in Most brown coal mining region, northern part of Czech Republic. I start from Sherry Ortner's assumption that history is influenced both by social system and by agency. Therefore, I analyze traumatic face of Most landscape, reorganized by modern technology heavily together with anency of local inhabitants transformed onto collective public events. Readers can find here one of the first attempt to organize rich material, collected durnig my five years long ethnographic field work done in a Strupcice village. By the reasons of socialistic programme to mine the village and thanks to postsocialistic changes in Czech law, Strupcice got stuck and surrounded by two large mines. The village is dynamically developing presently. There are two main chapters from total five in the thesis. In the first one, I find the traumatic part of the surrounding landscape in several kinds of material, nevertheless the most important one is represented by naratives. Activists on the Road to the Zapatista Territory

Thesis "Activists on the Road to Zapatista Territory" gives a resonance of actual results of my research among activists in Chiapas and Germany with contemporary theories. Based in theories of globalization and social movement and in dialogue with fieldwork data, it elaborates proper analytical concepts. These concepts enable to study journeys of activists to the Zapatista territory in Mexican state of Chiapas. Thesis aims to follow concepts of neo- zapatistas networks, which emerged around indigenous Zapatists and spread all over the World. Middle-Class activists from Germany enter these networks while travelling to Chiapas. Thesis scrutinize the nature of six months' journeys of activists and especially focus on transformation of so-called Imaginative knowledge of the World to Experienced knowledge of the World in the context of exoticism, poverty and Zapatista resistence.
