Molina Aguirre, Giovanni Francisco ; Hajdinová, Eva (advisor) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee) ; Mód, László Balázs (referee)
3 Abstract This thesis aims to examine the historical evolution of wine production and the population's sense of self-identification in the Mělník region of Bohemia, Czech Republic. In addition, assess the extent of regional identity, wine heritage, and ties to the wine industry presence in the region. Field research was conducted with Mělník wine industry stakeholders to obtain a more accurate picture of the current state of the wine business. In addition, another field questionnaire was administered to Czech students regarding their emotions and general associations with the Mělník region. The results revealed the development, productive process, and challenges of Mělník concerning a competitive European market and their efforts to preserve and enhance the area's heritage and maintain a balance between tourism and wine production. The proximity to Prague has also influenced the development of the wine geographically protected label VOC Mělník, which was the last one to be implemented in the Czech Republic in 2015. Keywords wine; heritage; identity; Bohemia; Mělník
The EU Crisis and European Identities in the Netherlands: Analysing representations of the EU in the Dutch press in 2005 and 2012
de Jong, Jan ; Janáč, Jiří (advisor) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee) ; Kubišová, Zuzana (referee)
Although the perceived lack of a European identity has always been an issue in the legitimisation of the EU, the economic crisis has intensified the struggles between national and European group identities. The main focus of this thesis the way group identities are represented in the coverage of the EU by two Dutch newspapers, the Telegraaf and NRC Handelsblad, in 2005 and 2012, before and after the start of the crisis. Using Jenkins' (2008) definition of social identity, the way in which different in- and out-groups are represented in the articles is analysed. In line with Lengyel (2014), a more positive and stable representation of the EU was found in the more 'elite' NRC Handelsblad, with a more Eurosceptic and changing attitude in the more 'populist' Telegraaf, creating a divergence between the two newspapers. Also, in accordance with Etzioni (2013), the representation of the EU as a political community in NRC Handelsblad in both years can be seen as a reason for the relative stability of its discourse, with the more utilitarian attitude towards the EU in the Telegraaf explaining the radicalisation of its articles after the economic crisis. Finally, the main conclusion of this thesis is that contrary to Eder's (2012) claim that the economic crisis is a critical point in the development of a...

Kim, Hyejin ; Daniel, Ondřej (advisor) ; Michela, Miroslav (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
Transmission of memory: the Heritage Trail and Jeju Uprising This thesis aims to shed light on the stories of individuals in transmitting memories using the heritage trail as a medium. Thus, this thesis examines how the heritage trail works as memory embodiment and, further, its role in transmitting memory. The research site, Jeju Island of the Republic of Korea, was selected due to its little recognition as both cultural and natural heritage concerning the history of Jeju Uprising. This event is called in different ways, including the April 3rd Incident, Jeju Killings, Jeju Rebellion, and simply 4.3 (Sasam), representing the date of the armed uprising in Jeju Island in 1943. The heritage trail of the Jeju Uprising called the 4.3 trail was examined empirically as a case study. Fieldwork was conducted from 22 September to 10 October 2020 in Jeju Island. The data was collected from interviews and participant observation and then narratively analyzed. There are polysemic memories and narratives within the same discourse because the names of calling the Uprising vary from context to context. The memory workers were interviewed, and the practice of walking as a component of the trail was studied to examine multiple dimensions of the memories surrounding the trail. Finally, this thesis concludes that in...

EÖTVÖS LORÁND UNIVERSITY IN BUDAPEST Charles University Faculty of Arts Institute of World History REDEFINING THE RELATIONSHIP IN AN ERA OF HERITAGE: THE FRANCO-CHINESE CULTURAL DIALOGUE Master's Thesis Meiyu ZHAI Thesis supervisor in Prague: Mgr. Ondřej Daniel, Ph.D. Thesis supervisor in Budapest: Dr. Péter Erdősi Budapest and Prague, 2021 Abstract A long history and rich national cultural heritage have made China and France global cultural powers and laid the foundation for the development of their cultural industries. However, unlike many powerful countries, the model of cultural governance in these two countries is generally state-led. They have a centralized administrative tradition, with direct and extensive state involvement in cultural affairs, and cultural exchanges with foreign countries promoted by governmental organizations, which is more like a kind of cultural diplomacy. The French government places the protection of cultural heritage at the forefront of its cultural policy, considering that cultural industries are related to the quality of nationals, national tradition and cohesion, national image and national cultural security, etc. In recent decades, China has become increasingly active in the cultural heritage discourse led by UNESCO, and there has been a 'heritage fever'. As a result,...

Branda, Martin ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Černá, Jana (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
in English The master thesis is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of English written travelogues of the second half of the 18th century, which described Spain and Portugal. I work with two original texts and one translation from Italian, all the texts which were popular among their readers. The main goal of the thesis is to create the complex image of both respective countries and their inhabitants, based on the analysis of travelogues. During the analysis, I use the concept of stereotype as defined by Walther Lippmann. I also use so-called Black Legend, the negative view of the Iberian Peninsula originating in the 16th century. At the same time, the aim of the thesis is to compare the images in all works and come to more general conclusions about English perception of Spain and Portugal. Keywords: Spain, Portugal, travelogues, image of the Other, Black Legend, Southey, Baretti, Young

Town, canal, and region. The impact of drainage processes on the urban centrality of Sombor in the first half of Ninetenth century
Ljuboja, Dušan ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
This thesis examines the impact of drainage processes that were conducted in the first half of the Nineteenth century on the urban centrality of the free royal town of Sombor. The existing approach in the literature regarding urbanization in Kingdom of Hungary mainly focused on the economic role of a settlement, which put aside the importance of its legal status within the feudal system. This theory, even though it validly changed the definition of what being urban means for a specific settlement, also passed over the importance of the administrative aspect of centrality. In the case of Sombor, there were two main central political authorities that interacted and conflicted with each other, thus impeding the overall progress of a settlement as a whole. On the one side, town's administration represented the interests that did not usually go beyond the territory under their control. On the other, Bács-Bodrog County's administration represented the interests of the feudal dominions and inhabitants living there. The main hypotheses of this thesis is that the process of land drainage, which was conducted in order to reduce the level of redundant waters and ameliorate conditions for agricultural activity, emanated contested centrality of Sombor as a settlement, and showed juxtaposed positions of the Town...
Nation-building policies and interethnic relations in post-Soviet Kazakhstan.
Ushakova, Anastassiya Vladimirovna ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
Inner-state conflicts arising from cultural, ethnic, linguistic and other differences started appearing after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Kazakhstan, being one of the main recipients of the Slavic diaspora in Soviet times encountered the problems of interethnic distrust and alienation after 1991. Despite the fact the Kazakhstani government had announced as its main priority the construction of a civic nation and of the feeling of belonging to one state, it strongly supported Kazakh self-consciousness, which led to several consequences, one of which was intensive emigration of the Slavic population. It has resulted in demographic, socio- economic and interethnic tensions. Despite the fact these were studied to some extent, no comprehensive approach has been taken to analyze these issues. Therefore, this research paper aims to answer the question of how the Kazakhstani nation- building policy influenced the relations between Kazakhs and Russians. Given that the instilling of the national idea can be achieved through many institutions this research focuses on the historical narratives in school and university textbooks; administrative regulations and legislative systems, and their implications for each ethnic group; plus their implementation in the symbolic realm of the cities, which...
Physical-spatial and social configuration at neighborhood level, the Raval (Barcelona), an urban evaluation according with the Compact City Model
Azofeifa Valverde, Edwin Javier ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Janáč, Jiří (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
Physical-spatial and social configuration at neighborhood level, the Raval (Barcelona), an urban evaluation according with the Compact City Model Edwin Javier Azofeifa Valverde ABSTRACT In urban areas, economic development and efforts for improving the quality of citizens' lives, instead of complementing each other and contributing to the advancement of the city, both of them generate and accentuate the processes of physical and social fragmentation in cities. This thesis describes and evaluates the physical-spatial and social configuration in the neighbourhood of Raval in Barcelona, with a particular focus on the role played in that configuration by the immigrant population. The aim is to identify how those processes in which social inequality and a lack of access to certain services and facilities manifest themselves. In order to illustrate this reality and understand the configuration of Raval, population data and information regarding services, facilities, and urban furniture were gathered. The concept of compact urban development (the compact city model) was used in order to interpret the potential weaknesses in the neighbourhood, which hinder its functionality. The main drawbacks are the predominance of population groups occupying certain spaces hindering their potential integration in the...
"Serbian" Cultural Events in Buda and Pest between 1860 and 1867
Tömöry, Miklós ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
"Serbian" Cultural Events in Buda and Pest between 1860 and 1867 Miklós Tömöry (Erasmus Mundus Master "TEMA" - Budapest-Prague-Paris) Abstract Key terms: nationalism, Serbian history, Habsburg Empire, Buda and Pest, urban cultural milieus Situated at the very heart of the Habsburg-ruled Hungarian Kingdom, the twin cities of Buda and Pest played an important role as centres of modern Hungarian (Magyar) and Slavic national movements as well in the course of the nineteenth century. Public and semi-public urban spaces and institutions of the public sphere were used by members of the emerging Slovak, Serbian, Croatian national intelligentsias. Considering their importance in this earlier stage of nation building (and not primarily because of their overall ethnic composition) it is even possible to call Buda and Pest as "Slavic cities".1 These urban spaces had a specific role in the case of the Serbian national movement. In these cities institutions were founded which served as patterns for other national movements as well. During this period of time a vivid exchange of ideas between Hungarians and Serbs can be observed in the cities; multilingualism and even multiple identities were characteristic for the era. To describe complex cultural interrelations in the urban space the thesis will use the notion of urban...
