Smith Slámová, Radka ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Dvořák, Dominik (referee)
The diploma thesis compares learning conditions in bilingual and regular classrooms in two primary schools from the perspective of educational equity. The first chapter summarizes available information on bilingual classes in the Czech public school system (their prevalence, licensing conditions, and financing). The second chapter describes tracking in the Czech basic school system and its implications for educational inequity. The final chapter of the theoretical part describes the main school factors influencing student achievement in the Czech Republic and abroad. The empirical part presents case studies of two public schools that run a CLIL class. The schools differ in terms of the administrator of the bilingual class, target language, location, and financing of the class. The research compares regular and CLIL classes at each school with regards to admission procedures, pupil characteristics, learning conditions, teacher expectations, teaching methods, and other aspects influencing student achievement. The results reveal that bilingual and regular classes at both schools differ most in terms of socioeconomic compositition and student achievement, giving the pupils of bilingual classes an unfair advantage. However, the classes also differ in other aspects, of which the significance to parents...

Primary school curriculum enrichment in the subject area of science
Fischerová, Zuzana ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Simonová, Jaroslava (referee)
The results of the international study TIMSS (The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) raise concerns that Czech primary pupils fall behind in some content domains of science (namely the physical sciences) and in some skills (experimental skills). This thesis compares the Czech curriculum with the current international trends in the science education and shows that above mentioned topics/skills are not sufficiently covered in the official curriculum. The second part of the thesis describes a case study of a relatively successful implementation of innovative science lessons focused on these skills in three primary classrooms of a Czech school. The concepts of inquiry-based learning, theory of learning materials and lesson study method are the main components of the theoretical and conceptual background of the study. When comparing the Czech curriculum (official documents and textbooks used in school) and school curricular plans with the TIMSS framework, it emerges that both the national curricular framework and the school curriculum do not cover some of those upper mentioned. Based on these findings, a lesson plan introducing some of the missing areas and task types was developed and tested in a particular school. The qualitative research desigh of case study with embedded...

Poórová, Edita ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Šebková, Helena (referee) ; Urbánek, Petr (referee)
The thesis deals with an examination in the context of student assessment in higher education. This process is researched in terms of the institutional frame of student assessment at universities and within a real educational process. We would like to point at the topicality of this theme in pedagogical theory, practice and research. Despite the fact that examination and assessment of students at university belongs to the duties of a university teacher this theme has neither been researched nor discussed in Slovakia a lot. The aim of our thesis was to find out how the university students are examined and assessed during a semester in Slovakia and what external factors influence this process. In our theoretical part we concentrate on important aspects of the university student assessment process as they are presented in literature. In the empirical part we describe the research which we have conducted at different faculties of three universities in Slovakia. By means of the qualitative research methods (document analysis, interview, observation) we have elaborated a multiple case study which brings an analysis of the assessment strategies of eight ESP teachers in different study programs. The results of our research show that studied university teachers act in the student assessment process very...
Lower secondary school pupil with special educational needs in the social studies class: a case study
Sedláková, Anna ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
This thesis studies the functioning of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream lower secondary schools. The special focus is on social studies classes. The teaching/learning processes are described within the broader context of education, which includes mainly parents or legal guardians, teachers and teaching assistants. The theoretical part describes the legal framework of inclusion in the Czech Republic and previous research on the role of teaching assistants. The empirical part uses the qualitative approach. Several cases are presented based on analysis of documents, interviews and observations. The data were compared across the cases. The results suggest that there is a difference between the lessons of social studies and the classes of the "core subjects". The teaching assistants are available in the social studies classes only rarely. Given the mixed effects of the teaching assistants on learning and socialization of the special needs pupils, this situation might have both positive and negative impact. Understanding of Society by Czech Pre-school Children
Tomášková, Nikola ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Michaela (referee)
TITLE: Understanding of Society by Czech Pre-school Children AUTHOR: Nikol Tomášková DEPARTMENT: Institute for Research and Development of Education SUPERVISOR: RNDr. Dominik Dvořák, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The society's need to teach financial literacy to children of as early as pre-school age is ever increasing. Since there is number of methodologies currently being developed on this topic, the author considers crucial to explore a child's conception of socioeconomic phenomena associated with financial literacy before these guidelines are introduced in Czech nursery schools for practical use. In this thesis pre-school children's perception of such phenomena as profession, employment and associated financial flows, as well as the concept of poverty and wealth are being examined. Theoretical basis of this research uses certain principles of the constructivist model of development and education within the general framework of pre- school education. Our work has been also influenced by the ideas of J. Piaget and L. S. Vygotsky, in particular by those on children's thinking and thought processes. As a method to examine the above mentioned perceptions of children, an in-depth clinical interview has been used. The interview aimed to explore not only what knowledge of the selected socioeconomic phenomena the respondents...
Analysis of teaching materials for teaching media literacy in CR
Vízková, Zuzana ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
Diploma thesis deals with the content analysis of the only media education textbook, which was published in 2009. This textbook represents a teaching material for secondary school students in the Czech Republic. After the theoretical background of this topic and presentation of the curricular reform of the Czech educational systém in 2007, the work focuses on the content analysis and comparison of the textbook and recommended outputs of the Czech curricular framework. Moreover, it deals with improving core competencies of the students while teaching the media education. The didactic content of the textbook is the most concerned thing. For this kind of research the qualitative content analysis method has been chosen, using the Bloom's taxonomy of the educational goals (primarily a cognitive domain). The analysis deals with the tasks in the textbook, which are given to the students. The result of the research reflects the emphasis on memorizing data, moreover, it shows the trend of simple evaluation which do not consider the previous deeper analysis. This fact is consistent with the opinion of many other curriculum content critics in Czech schools.
Pupils' conceptions of science and scientists and possibilities of influencing them
Šmídová, Petra ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Stará, Jana (referee)
The aim of the diploma thesis was to describe pupils' conceptions of science and scientists and also to suggest some possibilities to influence them. In the theoretical part of the thesis common knowledge of pupils' conceptions of science and scientists is described. It also summarises researches following up these issues, and conceptions of science education at primary school in the Czech Republic and other chosen states. In the empirical part a research focused on getting information about pupils' knowledge of science and scientists and their approach is presented. The results show, that pupils' conceptions of science and scientists are heterogeneous and the role of out-of-school activities of chosen pupils was more significant than influence of school. In the final part of the thesis there are appropriate ways how to influence pupils' conceptions of the area of science at school are outlined
