Diphtongization ý > ej in Moravian Books of Testimonies

The diploma thesis deals with description of the distribution of diphthongization ý > ej in Moravian Books of Testimonies of the 16th-17th century, which represent important sources for description of the period language. The material basis of the work consists of editions of Smolná kniha Nového Města na Moravě, Smolná kniha velkobítešská, Černé knihy práva loveckého na hradě Buchlově, Smolná kniha města Lipníka a Krevní kniha městečka Bojkovic. All expressions containing ej from the original ý as well as expressions in which the secondary hardened ý was diphthongized (cases such as vozejk) and finally words with the preserved original ý were excerpted, recorded in the Microsoft Excel and manually tagged. The distribution of diphthongization was described on the basis of selected linguistic and non-linguistic variables. Finally, the results were compared with the results of previous research and the place of the books of testimonies within the period manuscript and printed production was specified.

Phonetics and Phonology of Czech in Gęsiniec in the Strzelin District

The bachelor thesis deals with a description of phonetics and phonology of the current condition of Czech in Gęsiniec in the Strzelin District, Poland. Its focal point is an analysis of phonetic and phonological phenomena based on records gathered during a field research in the town of Gościęcice Dolne, Strzelin District. Other parts of the thesis are a summary of the history of Gęsiniec, its current state and a description of the linguistic research in the area up to now within the field of Czech dialectology. The latter part of the thesis describes the research methodology, it further includes an analysis of the material and metadata about the informant. A comparison of the conslusions reached with the secondary literature follows. Appendices consist of samples of transcribed records, a blank consent form, a detailed structure of the field interview and an accompanying form and furthermore a picture appendix referred to in the thesis.

Impact of 14th century phonetic and phonological changes in progress on the Dresden Bible

The thesis is devoted to the description of the projection of 14th century phonetic and phonological changes in progress onto the graphics of the Dresden Bible, one of the first copies of the oldest complete Old Czech translation of the Bible. For the research we chose three old Czech phonetic and phonological changes: diphthongization ó > uo (and an irregular change o > uo) and two Old Czech umlauts 'u > i (and 'ú > í) and 'o > ě (and 'ó > ie). The basis for the excerption were transliterated texts in the edition Staročeská Bible drážďanská a olomoucká. In our work we focus on the research of phonetic and phonological changes on the basis of the exact number of original and incoming forms in order to give a more accurate description of these changes and to verify the possible existence of statistically significant differences. For this purpose, the words excerpted were manually tagged and sorted out (using the COUNTIF and COUNTIFS statistical functions) in the Microsoft Excel 2007. Their statistical processing was carried out with the help of a statistical online calculator.

Phonetics and Phonology of Czech in Gęsiniec in the Strzelin District

This bachelor thesis deals with the description of phonetics and phonology of present condition of Czech in Husinec, Strzelin district. Its focal point is an analysis of phonetic and phonological varieties found in records based on field research in the town of Gościęcice Dolne, Strzelin district, Poland. The next parts of the thesis are following: summary of Husinec's history, current condition of Husinec and description of linguistic research in the area up to now in the field of Czech dialectology. The practical part of the thesis also includes the research methodology, description of working with the materiál and metadata about the informant. There is a comparison of own consequences and consequences in the mentioned literature below the analysis. The appendixes consists of some examples of transcribed records, an unfilled informed consent form, a structure of an interview and its additional form and a picture appendixed mentioned in the thesis.

Graphical and Phonological Analysis of Songs by Valentin Šubar: the Perspective of Vowel Length

The thesis analyzes the non-standard vowel length and shortness in the complete hymn book of Valentin Šubar, as it is presented in the edition published by the Utraquist Jiří Hanuš of Kronenfeld in 1612 (Knihopis K16012). Based on selected transliterated segments, the level of consistency in the marking of vowel quantity is identified, and the outcome is subsequently taken into account when interpreting individual non-standard forms. Consequently, the results of previous research on vowel length marking in the 17th century Czech prints are slightly modified and the incorrect datation of surviving exemplars of the hymn book is corrected.

Language shift in a Czech minority in Serbia

This thesis deals with contemporary language situation of Czech minority living in Serbian part of the region of Banat, focusing on the language shift as a significant sociolinguistic phenomenon which refers to intergenerational language loss. In the first part of the thesis, basic theoretical principles are presented and an outline of present conceptions of the language shift, based on research of various bilingual communities, is given. The second part concentrates on the analysis of the data gathered during several excursions into Vojvodina located in the northern part of Serbia (Vršac, Bela Crkva, Češko Selo). On the basis of formulated hypothesis, it is investigated what attitude to minority language speakers through generational spectrum occupy, how particular sociolinguistic factors are reflected in their language competence and how the intergenerational communication happen in particular interactions. The goal of the research is to give a partial picture of the development of the language shift in Serbian part of the Banat, compiled on the basis of the direct observation inside the specific family as well as the analysis of the interactions between the family's particular members. Dialectal vocabulary in the field of agriculture in the Kelč region

This bachelor thesis deals with the dialect agricultural terminology of the Kelečsko microregion. Its focal point is an alphabetically structured difference dialect dictionary, based on field research in the town of Kelč and nearby towns of Dolní Těšice a Police. Also included is a geographical and historical description of the researched area, with description of linguistic research in the area up to now, linguistic analysis of the dialect itself and treatise on the problem of dialect dictionary creation. In the following chapter is a linguistic analysis of the gathered dialectal material. The addendum consists of three examples of the dialect speech, pictures from the semi-structured interviews and an unfilled informed consent form.

The management of language maintenance and shift in the Czech language community in Chicago

The Master's thesis The management of language maintenance and shift in the Czech language community in Chicago examines (based on the analysis of the transcript of more than twenty hours of recordings of testimonies of thirteen speakers from Czech-speaking areas of western peripheries of American Chicago who have been living outside the Czech countries for more than forty years) the issues of language maintenance, transmission to future generations, and language shift in the expatriate community. The work analyses the environment and diverse situations of possible contact with the Czech language, reflected by the speakers, as well as the importance of national institutions (such as expatriate associations, minority schools, Czech parishes, etc.) for language maintenance of individuals. Respondents reflect also the conditions under which they were able to pass the Czech language to succeeding generations." It analyses testimonies of Czech Americans on what reactions they have received on language features showing their origin (such as foreign accent and name) and what assimilation strategies they used to moderate such stigma. The project examines, from the perspective of simple language management, how bilingual skills and the identity of respondents interact in a research interview.

Greek as a Source of Enrichment of the Czech Vocabulary

Helena Petáková, Greek as a source of enrichment of the Czech vocabulary Abstract: The Masterʼs thesis examines the influence of the Greek language on the Czech vocabulary from different angles. In the introduction, we define basic terms, which we use in the text, especially "loanword" and with it synonymous "lexical borrowing". Next chapter is devoted to the issues of lexical borrowing in general (motivation, ways of involvement of foreign words in the system of the recipient language, and the sorting options of the loanwords). The third chapter maps borrowing of the Greek words into the Czech language in various periods of development. Furthermore, we are interested in the Czech reception of the Greek language (the admiration of Greek, comparison of Czech with Greek) in the crucial moments of modern history and its connection with national and linguistic defensive trends. After this cultural-historical insight, in the fifth, sixth and seventh chapter we return to the lexical borrowings from Greek. We follow various means by which they entered the Czech language, the way of their involvement in the Czech vocabulary, and finally the semantic and stylistic spheres, in which the Graecisms were most applied in our country.
