Commented translation: Portuguese art and architecture

The work Commented Translation: Portuguese Art and Architecture consists of two main parts: the first part being a Czech translation of a part of a French travel guide about Portugal, Madeira and Azores (Brabis, D. Bosqus, N. et al. Portugal, Madre et les Açores. Paris: Michelin, 2004. p. 86 - 97), the second part being a commentary of the Czech translation and the translation process. The first part is preceded by an introduction that aims to characterize the original and to explain the reasons for choosing the text, and by a translation analysis of the original characterizing the text (and the whole book in general, too) from the exterior point of view (i.e. time and space, the recipient of the text, the functions the text may have). The different recipient, function and some other characteristics of the French original and the Czech translation are being discussed as well. This is followed by an analysis from the interior point of view (i.a. the languages occurring in the original, the kind of language used in general, the style of the text or the language functions of the text). Raymond Queneau and his novel Blue Flowers. Translation of one type of French experimental prose

Raymond Queneau's novel s ha ve been translated in to Czech since the 60's of the 20th century. This work focuses on two of hi s novels, typical of their experimentalism: Zazie in the Metro and The Blue Flowers. A stylistic analysis of the original text showed different aspects of Queneau's poetics and also difficulties faced by a translator. Unusually rich means of expression, such as puns and neologisms at the lexical level, changing of stylistic layers or new French - handwriting created by the author to draw nearer spoken and written language, intertextuality and mathematical structures incorporated into the composition of the novel s are typ i cal features of Queneau' s work. We examined possibilities of Czech while translating Queneau's language experiments by comparing translations of two Queneau's novels, do ne by two different translators. Our work concentrates mainly on problems with translating puns, neologisms, phraseology, and new French. Jiri Pelikan 's trans lati on of the novel The Blue Flowers proved that in spite of some divergences between the original and the target text (archaization of verba dicendi, compensation), it is, on the whole, possible to keep to the author' s complex poetics, and to create, within the given scope, a work of translation that can compare with the original. Dramatic production of Francophone African authors in Czech translation

v anglickém jazyce This thesis deals with the dramatic production of Francophone African authors and the translation of their texts into Czech. The theoretical part briefly describes the history of African drama and its specific elements. The following chapters examine the perception of this specific genre in Europe - especially in France and the Czech Republic. The thesis also documents the history of the Czech festival Africa in Creation, which has been held in Prague in the first decade of the new millennium. During its existence, it presented many African authors. Later, their plays were translated into Czech within the series The Contemporary play, published by the Arts and Theatre Institute. From the point of view of translatology, the study focuses on the general theory of the drama translation (based on the theories of translation from the 2nd part of the 20th century, especially the Czech model of Jiří Levý) and the post-colonial and cultural translation theories. French-Arab literature in the Czech translations

The to pic i s divided in to two parts: the theoretical part comprises characteristics of Arabic francophone authors and the cultural background that they come from. The thesis constitutes an elementary database of the most important Arabic authors and their works, giving considerable attention to the controversial issue of works written by Maghrebian women authors, as well as to current problems of the Islamic world. Among the most important authors, who enrich the literature of the world and contribute also to the literary science, we could mention Assia Djebar (specialized in the comparative literature, teaches at the University of New York), Tahar Ben Jelloun, who writes about blending of cultures and necessity of peaceful coexistence, etc. The French cultural policy creates optimum conditions for Arabic francophone authors, who thus never fail to bring profit to their publishers.

The bachelor thesis consists of two parts: the translation of 20 standardized pages of the chosen text Lidské pudy a emoce and its commentary. The part of the text that we decided to work on focuses on human emotions, their definition, typology and functions. The text also explains how to manipulate our emotions. Furthermore, the commentary consists of the translation analysis. We concentrate on lexical, syntactic, stylistic and textual characteristics of our source text. In addition to this, the commentary exposes the translation method. Finally the commentary concentrates on several specific translation problems encountered throughout the process. The thesis consists of two main parts- translation and its commentary. It is a translation of 3 chapters of a French yachtsmen guide Guide de manoeuvre (Wharf mooring or double moor to another boat, Anchoring and Man overboard maneuver). In my translation, I tried to preserve the major function of the original text - to inform and instruct the reader. The second part of the work is a commentary of the translation which is focused on translation analysis of the original text, typology of translation problems and the methods of the translation. In the translation analysis I describe the original text with the factors affecting the text. Then I focus on the translation problems I dealt with and how they were solved. In the conclusion, I describe the translations methods I used.
