Effect of natural substances on transcriptional activity of nuclear and steroid receptors and expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP1A)
Bednaříková, Barbora ; Hodek, Petr (referee)
This work is based on two attached first authors' publications dealing with the effect of natural substances of plant origin on transcriptional activity of nuclear and steroid receptors and their action on cytochrome P450 expression, CYP1A subfamily. The studied substances are anthocyanidins and stilbenes, belonging to a broad group of phenolic compounds. The aim of the first study was to evaluate the effect of the most common anthocyanidins (cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, pelargonidin, and peonidin) on the transcriptional activity of nuclear and steroid receptors. The activities of nuclear receptors: vitamin D receptor (VDR), retinoid X receptor (RXR), retinoic acid receptor (RAR), pregnane X receptor (PXR), thyroid receptor (TR), and steroid receptors: progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) were assessed using either stable or transiently transfected luciferase gene reporter cell lines. The cytotoxicity assays and gene reporter assay were performed after the 24h treatment of cells with increasing range of concentrations (10 nM to 50 µM) of selected anthocyanidins. The results of experiments indicate that none of the studied anthocyanidins in all tested concentrations caused remarkable changes of transcriptional activity of...
The picture of woman in portrait photography in magazine letem světem in 1927 and 1937
Bednaříková, Barbora ; Lábová, Alena (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
Bachelor thesis The Picture of Woman in Portrait Photography in Magazine Letem světem in 1927 and 1937 examines different images of women in the picture magazine Letem světem. Using visual analysis methods, the thesis compares pictures of a woman as a mother, a housewife, a sex symbol, a worker or a sportswoman in 1927 and 1937. In the theoretical part, it explains the origins and success of picture magazines including the magazine Letem světem in political and media context of the time. In the second part, it describes various methods of portrait photography in the First Czechoslovak Republic, attitudes to the photographic process and, of course, contemporary female visual stereotypes used in the magazine contents and advertisements. The aim of this work is also to show differences between the image of a woman in the magazine and her real social and legal status and living conditions of the time, described in the first part of the thesis.
School Uniform: Reasons, Discussion, Decision Making
Bednaříková, Barbora ; Voda, Jan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Petr (referee)
Innovation and change are phenomenons any time. Within the scope of the Theory and Prac- tice of School Management module, the theses deals with management of a specific change, namely introduction of school uniforms into practice. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on relevant specialized literature on school management, marketing strategy, school culture and change management. It is completed with available foreign experience and con- clusions of surveys and research of media image, which is playing an important role in respect with the issue. The practical part, i.e. research, provides information and data obtained by the author from interviews with management of schools currently introducing school uniforms. The research results show that the original expectations have not been met in any of the pro- jects included. Understanding the cause of this failure, or else, partial success of the projects, constitutes an important part of the information summary designed for school headmasters considering introduction of school uniforms. The generalized research findings combined with theoretical knowledge imply a set of key recommendations introduced in the thesis con- clusion.

Photographs of presidential candidates in czech newspapers ahead of elections of 2013
Bednaříková, Barbora ; Lábová, Alena (advisor) ; Štefaniková, Sandra (referee)
Master's thesis Photographs of Presidential Candidates in Czech Newspapers ahead of Elections of 2013 compares the visual coverage of nine presidential candidates in the photographs published in three national broadsheet newspapers Lidové noviny, Právo and Hospodářské noviny during the period of four weeks before the first Czech direct presidential elections in January 2013. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes literature probing the visual framing of politics and the influence of photographic images in media on audiences and their decisions in elections. The quantitative content analysis compares the number of each candidate's pictures in the Czech press in order to determine whether the visual coverage was balanced or not and whether this could have affected the election results. It also verifies the hypothesis that newspapers tend to publish more pictures of the candidates with similar political orientation. Besides that, the thesis also compares how each of the journals uses photography illustration by examining the size, placement, type, caption length and authorship of the pictures.
