Child sponsorship programme: a survey of donors' attitudes and experience

Diplomová práce prezentuje výsledky výzkumu provedeného na skupině dárců projektu Adopce na dálku Arcidiecézní charity Praha, do kterého je zapojeno více než 12.000 osob. Metodou výzkumu bylo dotazníkové šetření vzorku 500 náhodně vybraných dárců. Výzkum byl rozdělen do čtyř tematických okruhů. První z nich obsahuje rozbor struktury dárců podle základních socio-demografických charakteristik. Druhá část se věnuje spokojenosti dárců s projektem včetně spokojenosti s jeho dílčími oblastmi. Účinnost různých způsobů propagace projektu je zkoumána v třetím okruhu. Poslední část se věnuje postojům dárců k různým aktuálním tématům týkajících se projektu, které jsou v souvislosti s projektem sponzorování dětí celosvětově diskutovány a problematizovány: jde především o postoje dárců ke korespondenci s podporovaným dítětem a k využívání prostředků na podporu rozvoje komunit (rodin, vesnic, škol) namísto podpory jedinců.
Dying and death as a sociological problem

This thesis aims to trace the thematisation of death and dying in Sociology, which in the 1990' evolves into constituion of independent sociological subdiscipline: "sociology of dying and death". The main intention then is to go beyond the commonly held beliefthat the death is still a taboo. The Thesis consists of four thematic parts: first part summarizes the occurence of problems of dying and death in sociology, reflecting recent developments not only in social sciences, but also in the society as such. Theretofore the death is interpreted by religion but has been medicalized so that nowadays medicine represents the determinative paradigm of death. This development is in accordance with the most important framework in the intensely individualized society centered around the notion of "self', closely connected with the concept of body and embodiment. Second part represents - on the background of medicine - three stages of death, where each of them allows to develop its own sociological reflection. Third part is concerned with the revival concept of death in the work of British sociologist Tony Walter. Integration of French persons living in Prague

Along with the migration of foreigners into the Czech Republic, the question of their integration into Czech society arises. The work focuses on the integration of French living in Prague. Based on 14 interviews the thesis analyzes their life with an emphasis on social integration, which is examined in terms of four dimensions: structural, cultural, interactive, and identifying. The thesis deals with theoretical concepts of migration and integration, which are related to the specific case of French. Sociology of suicide and the Czech case

Diploma thesis "Sociology of suicide and the Czech case" deals with the phenomenon of suicide. The suicide problematics is discussed in two aspects. The theoretic part includes discussion and comparative analysis of sociological works dealing with the suicide phenomenon. The thesis analyzes classical theories of sociologists Emil Durkheim, Piritim Sorokin, Tomáš G. Masaryk and later concepts offered by Jack D. Douglas and Edwin S. Shneidman. These authors considered suicide to be a social phenomenon, which is primarily influenced by social integration level. Social integration means involvement of an individual to the social group or society. Analysis of sociological literature on suicide phenomenon provides basis for better understanding of available suicide rates statistics in the Czech environment and moreover allows deriving sociological determinants of suicidality, which are central for the following analysis of the Czech Republic case. Joke as an Expression of Collective Memory: Conjunction of Maurice Halbwachs' and Sigmund Freud's theories

(in English): The bachelor thesis is founded on the interdisciplinary connection of two classic scholars' approaches in psychology and sociology, in a broader frame the topic of collective memory. Specifically, it aims to theoretical application of thoughts of Sigmund Freud, introduced in his book Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, to the theory of collective memory by Maurice Halbwachs; thus explaining joke as an expression of collective memory. The paper shows an interdisciplinary relationship of texts by the mentioned authors and also discusses the possibility of supporting sociological theory of memory by thoughts of one of the most influential psychologists. In the first part, the concept of collective memory by Maurice Halbwachs is introduced. It is explained in sociological context and with consideration of the influences of linguistic social framework of the memory. Another connection of those two main themes is explained through the concept of unconsciousness, which is the main topic of the second part of thesis, together with Freud's ideas. Bergera, který Weberovy předpoklady rozvíjí. Cílem práce je kritická analýza a porovnání názorů na danou problematiku. Práce má teoretickou povahu a je vypracována historicko-srovnávací metodou. Abstract The bachelor thesis topic relates to the concepts of two personalities - Max Weber who presents the problem of the economical culture of capitalism in his work The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, and Peter L. Social and collective identity of the Deaf community/ies in Prague

This work deals with the collective and social identity of the Prague deaf. It is based on the presumption that the deaf can be regarded as a social group with specific characteristics which are interesting from a sociological perspective. The aim of this work is a description and understanding of the mode the deaf relate to each other and the way the social mechanisms are used for this purpose. The crucial chapter deals with the social categorization as a key mechanism for building and maintaining the social identity of the deaf. The following part is devoted to the collective identity, where two ideal types of the deaf collective identity are presented. The work is based on the qualitative research, which was conducted through semi-structured interviews with the deaf, simultaneously translated into Czech. Ways of Obtaining Taboo Information about Drugs by Addicts in Czechoslovakia

This thesis deals with the transmission of information about hard drugs which were concealed by social system in the 70th and 80th of 20th century from perspectives of drug users. We focus on the problematics of informational sources and channels by means of the social system and the systems theory of Niklas Luhmann. We analyse, by using grounded theory, information environment which influenced the drug subculture. The data sources consist of 35 interviews with addicts who were actively taking hard drugs before 1989. The aim of this thesis is a comprehensive look at the functioning of the drug subculture, transmission of taboo information in society 70th and 80th of 20th century by the theory of social capital and social systems.
Role and importance of traditions in the way of life

This thesis deals with the importance and role of tradition in the contemporary way of life. The term tradition represents ideas, physical objects and conduct patterns which are repeated, bringing values connected with the past, collective in observing and transmitting, including an aspect of the control executed by the authority. My thesis presents a widen postulate of the present decreasing importance of the tradition influenced by the Enlightenment. The text refers to the still continuing and newly rising traditions. The tradition maintains its position because 75 of its important functions on forming someone's identity, on the world understanding and on the individual position in the society. Without any doubt, the position of the tradition has changed a lot as compared to the traditional society. People are now less influenced by traditional authorities defending theirs own independence. They follow a tradition when it is profitable and attractive for them. They often try to avoid the unwanted duties and engagements. Individuals have now more opportunities to meet different ways of life, other traditions and customs. The National Theatre in Prague during the Nazi Occupation: The Foremost Theatre Scene between Oppression and Resistance. (A Historical-sociological Analysis) ABSTRACT The submitted dissertation, based on historical-sociological analysis, describes and explains the status, reaction and functionality of the National Theatre in Prague during the hardest times of our modern history - the occupation of the Czech lands by Nazi Germany, the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (1939-1945), the era when the National Theatre, as the top cultural institution, consolidated its artistry, its permanent values and interpretation efforts of its ensemble to defend the right of our society to preserve its own culture, its own existence. The principal objective of this work is to analyze methods and techniques by means of which the National Theatre in Prague, in line with its audience, steadily faced critical situations caused by the Nazi occupation. Among key factors in this process were the acts of Czech theatre performers proving their bravery as they put their work careers and even their own lives at risk to help guide our nation towards awareness and determination not to relinquish the nation's sovereignty.
