Jelínková, Barbora ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Šoltys, Otakar (referee)

The method applied here may be characterized as an organized hermeneutic analysis of political discourse. Through the application of an analytical - philosophical approach (e.g. application of the theory of maxima, illocutionary acts evaluation, and analysis of arguments and verification of their truthfulness), the method allows us to establish objective facts of the debate as well as some personal features of debate participants. To examine texts, the theoretical knowledge of distinguished authors (J. J. Austin, K. Bayer, T. A. van Dijk, N. Fairclough, H. P. Grice, J. Habermas, J. Kraus, G. N. Leeche, J. R. Searl, and others) have been made use of. In addition to the literary survey, the thesis also includes the argumentation in respect of selection of the method, selection of talk shows, transcript of debates from TV records, transformation of the text into an analysable form, and research methodology. "Media terrorism" via bacteria E.coli
Füleová, Veronika ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Škodová, Markéta (referee)
The diploma thesis "Media terrorism via bacteria E.coli" puts the so-called cucumber affair from Summer 2011 into wider context and aims to discover the main attributes of contemporary risks and define the way they are presented in the media. Misguiding media releases and the inability to identify the source of the bloody diarrhea outbreak in Germany caused by E.coli bacteria have collectively had a significant impact on consumer behavior and economic stability on a global level. Most people are dependent on government and expert authorities due to the fact that they cannot recognize what represents a realistic threat and what serves as a basis for media sensation. This is why this thesis studies the social constructionist theory, basic media routines and practices as well as theoretical concepts that support the production of pseudo-events. A content analysis of selected Czech dailies and weeklies was executed in order to enable a comparison of the language that has been common for all "pandemics" in the 21st century.

Kubištová, Lenka ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis "Role of the Men's Lifestyle Magazines in the Czech Media Market with Focus on the Maxim Magazine" deals with the analysis of five lifestyle magazines for men situated in the Czech Republic in 2011 - Playboy, Esquire, FHM, ForMen, and Maxim. Special attention is dedicated to Maxim as it is the most successful magazine in the segment. With the help of the discourse analysis in the interpretation of Teun A. van Dijk the work focuses on five categories that characterize the magazine discourse: the ambivalent approach to the traditional "heroic" masculinity, the way Maxim communicates with its readers, the role of humour (especially irony) and the magazine's view on homosexuals and women. The thesis demonstrates the ideological - sexist - base of the Maxim discourse with the support of demonstrative examples.

Psychological aspects of narration in mediacontens
Věchetová, Gabriela ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Wolák, Radim (referee)
The topic of narration in media contents is the main subject of my thesis. Psychological findings related to use of media, and television in particular, are contemplated. Myth which is examined from a psychological perspective represents the key topic of my thesis. The myth is compared to a fairytale as it embodies archetypal patterns of a human mind. In the thesis, first, the theoretical frames of naratology, semiotics, psychology and media studies are described. Second, my findings are used for a practical demonstration of a semiotic analysis of selected media messages: commercial, fairytale and news. Categories of cognition, emotion and motivation are used for considering the psychological aspects. Furthermore, deeper structures of human psyche and subconscious processes are stressed. The main objective of the thesis is to provide deeper understanding of mental operations while being exposed to media contents which utilize components of narration and myth. The topic of this thesis is complex; therefore, I have presented findings from disciplines mentioned above coherently. The thesis is, hence, a sectional essay offering integrated findings from multiple disciplines.
