Metaphors of Nature in the Weekly Magazine Reflex
Vacířová, Martina ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Stibral, Karel (referee)
The M.A. thesis Metaphors of Nature in the Czech Weekly 'Reflex' explores the question of how the changing human-nature relationship is reflected in this journal's writing on nature over the period of the last twenty years. The rationale for the choice of the Reflex weekly magazine is that it is not focused on nature or nature-related themes, and thus what we find in it can help us understand how the relationship between humans and nature has changed not only in the journal, but also in society. The principal assumption underlying the present effort is that the many and variegated existing forms of the relationship between humanity and nature transform themselves into various metaphors. By uncovering and analyzing these metaphors we are able to better understand this relationship itself. The theoretical section of this thesis discusses various ways of understanding the metaphor in general, including the conceptual metaphor approach developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson which is applied to the textual material in the subsequent empirical section. The theoretical chapters also present a number of metaphors of nature that have previously been analyzed in the literature, and their implications for the human-nature relationship are indicated. The empirical section contains an analysis of the...
Guilt and Forgiveness in Karamazov's Brothers from the View of Girard's Triangle of Desire
Havlíček, Petr ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
The work deals with the theme of guilt and forgiveness in The Brothers Karamazov. It tries to prove that individuals who are afflicted by triangular desire are unable to feel their guilt and are unable to forgive. Only after they break this triangle, they can realize their guilt and can forgive - ourselves and others. It also focuses on the close links between the triangle of desire and the Zossima`s concept. Zossima`s concept is meant semiotic body and the main pillar of the story, it is expressed by Zossima`s phrase " We are all guilty for everything." It operates in the Brothers Karamazov as active and passive element that helps the characters to fight with a triangle of a metaphysical desire and that also serves as a measure of consciousness of guilt and forgiveness. Studied characters are Zossima, "mysterious visitor", trinity father Karamazov / son Dmitri / Grushenka and Lisa Hohlakov.

It analyzes the effect of fictional worlds and their characters on the viewer's perception and interpretation of fiction. It emphasizes the difference of the impact of fiction on reality, depending on whether the recipient evaluates the fictional work by its relation to reality or realizes that the film doesn't refer to the actual world. The thesis describes the main concepts and problems of the theory of fictional worlds and applies them to the examples of films to show the importance of distinguishing the line between fiction and reality.
