The Person and his Way to Freedom in the Humanistic Framework of the Twentieth Century
Burda, Petr ; Ventura, Václav (referee) ; Novotný, Vojtěch (referee)
Résumé While we are standing shyly at the beginning of the third millennium, we feel to be a part of intellectual movement that has an essential meaning for humankind. The change of paradigms has not been completed yet; we are in the middle of a great change. It shows that numerous projects dreaming about a new land, which were made real by the modern era with such effort, are deficient and turn man's sight back to an entire basis of needs that gave birth to these projects. It seems proper to ask whether this land will be a land of people. After all tragedies of 20th century this question is quite legitimate. We live in the world where man seems to be reduced to a number, size of which grows with the profit he brings. It's obvious that a definition of man depends on his social role. Here they are: a businessman, a manager, an employer and an employee. But where is the human being? Nowadays, more urgently than whenever else, Diogenes' lamp is searching for the human being. Shakespeare's dilemma to be or not to be is more than a rhetorical question. It's the historical and existential space and at the same time it's also locus theologicus . Man nonstop collects his losses, suffers from various forms of violence and at the same time keeps projecting his hopes. At the beginning of our work we analyzed the...

Immortality and the Intermediate State of the Soul at Present Eschatology in the German Language Area
Kolář, Ondřej ; Štefan, Jan (advisor) ; Macek, Petr (referee) ; Ventura, Václav (referee)
The dissertation deals with a theme which in the final decades of the last century became the subject of many controversies, and which still today - perhaps together with the question of "salvation for all" - remains one of the most important and most widely-discussed issues in Christian eschatology. In comparison with the many serious questions with which contemporary theology is concerned, it may easily appear marginal or secondary, belonging to the sphere of ideas and speculation rather than the field of serious theological reflection. In fact, however, the question of the existence of human beings immediately after death - if it is not dismissed at once with a reference to allegedly "sober" and simple biblical testimonies or basic Christian confessions of faith - is one where basic theological viewpoints are confronted with positions that were adopted in eschatology and earlier dogmatic treatises.
Human society is getting old. We have to learn many new things about old people and dying, too. The work is divided into three basic parts. The first part is psychosocial view of being old and dying - society's attitude towards the old, how the old receive their physical and mental changes, society's looking at diseases and dying. The second part is biblical view of these phenomenons - the position of the old people in that time, society's attitude toward diseases and dying (new comprehension dying in New Testament). After biblical view follows philosophic. The last part is practical. In the research people were asked what they think about doctors' attitude towards dying people, if present society sufficiently speak about dying and death, if the care about the old people is acceptable, if they are able to speak about dying with their family, if they are afraid of dying and if so which things they have the biggest fear of.
