Proprietary Communities and Private Provision of Public Goods
Tětek, Josef ; Šíma, Josef (advisor) ; Ždímal, Martin (referee)
The fact that public goods exist is often taken as a rationale for government provision of such goods, mostly because of the free rider phenomenon. In the given paper the author challenges this view through theoretical discussion of alternative views on public goods and empirical evidence of private provision of public goods, such as zoning, rule creation and infrastructure development. Private property rights and contracting with communities based on these institutional tools are the main focal point in the research of private provision. Author examines proprietary communities in USA and Czech Republic and shows that private provision of public goods is subject to market demand and this demand is met with supply, given the appropriate institutional context.

How Financial Markets Assess the State of Major Economies
Němeček, Josef ; Jílek, Josef (advisor) ; Czesaný, Slavoj (referee)
In accordance with its main goal, the main thesis shows which published data and indicators contemporary financial markets use to assess the state of major economies and forecast their short-term future development. Using Bloomberg as the primary source, the thesis provides a detailed analysis of the indicators and surveys sought by finance professionals when assessing the performance of the economy in the United States, the euro-zone (with emphasis on Germany) and, in the context of the impact on the global economy and markets, in China and Japan. A preliminary hypothesis about the similarity or closeness between the theoretical view and the practical approach of financial markets has been refuted. Instead, after close scrutiny and detailed analysis, we have established that financial markets put great emphasis on forward-looking indicators and monetary policy. This emphasis was confirmed by a survey of local investors. Using expert opinion and analysis, the thesis charts an overview of select economic indicators and their over- (payrolls, consumer sentiment) or undervaluation (regional Fed activity indexes, CFNAI).

From economical point of view, the thesis devotes itself to FDI, value of their flows and reasons why they make towards the transatlantic partner. In spite of those relationships there arose and still operate many non-tariff barriers, which limit the fluency of goods, services and capital flows. Pechová, Lenka ; Geršl, Adam (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Michal (referee)
The topic of financial contagion is growing in importance as the financial markets are integrating and becoming global. In my work I test contagion between stock markets in Central Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland), markets in Western Europe (Euro zone, France, Germany and UK) and U.S. I use two types of model to test the data from ongoing subprime crisis. The first one is parametrical model that uses the correlation coefficients obtained from VAR regression, based on paper by Forbes and Rigobon 2003. The second one is non parametrical model that uses the Kendall's tau approach to measure the comovements of the stock markets based on paper by Li (2009). In the work is also provided overview of theoretical and empirical literature that is focused on contagion and related topics.

Corporate culture and its importance in multicultural global environment
POUCHOVÁ, Lenka
The doctoral thesis deals with the topic of specification and comparison of cultural dimensions of companies from different places of global community. Main focus is to answer a question, how the corporate culture and its cultural dimensions influence a shift of a company towards a knowledge-based economy. The identification of cultural dimensions was realized through the quantitative research VSM 94 in two German parent companies and their subsidiaries from the Czech Republic, India, Japan and USA. In case of one Czech subsidiary the research was extended with the qualitative research TCSD. Subsequently the identified cultural dimensions were compared with the desirable cultural dimensions of knowledge-based company. The results show that only cultural dimensions of low power distance and feminity correspond to the knowledge-based economy, long-term orientation is in the transition phase. The longest way to the knowledge-based economy was revealed by collectivism and uncertainty acceptance. Here can be found the greatest potential for corporate culture forming and human resources management. Based on the analysis of cultural dimensions, shared values, strength of corporate culture, cultural influence of parent company and impact of national culture were expressed proposals to shift the examined companies to the ideal state - knowledge-based company.
