Points of Perception: Possible Readings of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go

The thesis presents four perceptions of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go (2006) using (and synthesizing) the critical approaches of New Criticism, Reader-Response Criticism, Psychoanalytic Criticism, Structuralism and Deconstruction. The novel is read respectively as a (dis)continuation of the author's previous themes, a science-fictional dystopia, a comedy, and a metaphor for human condition. The main aim is to discuss aspects of each reading and to determine whether the meaning of the novel changes with different perceptions, or whether the meaning is independent of the critic's methods and perspectives.

Matěj Anastazia Šimáček - the personality and the work

Matěj Anastazia Simacek was a distinguished Czech writer, editor and publisher at the turn of the twentieth century. He was significantly involved in the development of the Czech literary criticism and forming a new generation of young authors which later established as Czech modernism. Although he was ranked among the most eminent personages of literature and culture in general, his name is now nearly unknown. Simacek's contribution to literature comprises of poetry, prose and drama. Though, his poetry is least valued. Due to ponderous style, appropriate for prose, and social issues, his poems are scarcely readable. Social issues link all Simacek's works. It is indisputable that he achieved much greater success in the field of prose and drama. Portrayal of sugar factories, civic society and the world of art salons was chosen as the central theme of his works. Detailed realistic depiction in some of his works is a perfect example of descriptive realism. Attracting attention to the problems of the proletariat perhaps remains the only Simacek's contribution to Czech literature. Nevertheless, he still did not perceive the proletariat as a powerful social class, thus his writings were neglected even at the time of relative popularity of such themes. The reflection of the Hungarian post-war reality in the novels of Hungarian female authors

This thesis entitled "The reflection of the Hungarian post-war reality in the novels of Hungarian female authors" presents an analysis of the post-war Hungarian female novels in the light of the depiction of the actual social reality. Three main writers of this period have been chosen for further examination: Magda Szabó (1917-2007), Anna Jókai (born 1932) and Erzsébet Galgóczi (1930-1989). This work focuses mainly on their most significant pieces. At the same time, the thesis includes a study of the previous literary era and its impact on the period in question, especially their very immediate predecessor, writer Margit Kaffka (1880-1918). In this regard, a more detailed analyses of the literary work of Magda Szabó has been provided, since she is the writer whose production most notably continues the realistic tradition. In addition, it was necessary to define the topic by temporal aspect as well, as the specific circumstances of the communist dictatorship between the years 1949-1989 had crucially influenced the whole society including culture. French holocaust literature: testimonies on (not) experienced

The World War II represents a huge turning point in the modern history of humankind. Its particularity, which consists first of all in the system of concentration camps and the genocide of Jewish people, caused the creation of a new literary genre - the Holocaust literature. The objective of this thesis is to present this specific genre, its origins and evolution in France, as well as its most important French authors. The first part of the thesis tries to elucidate some of the particular aspects of this literature. It speaks not only about the influence of history and evolution of the postwar society on this genre or about questions that are closely associated with it, but also about the difficulty to define the holocaust literature itself. From a number of definitions that exist, we have chosen for the purposes of this thesis the one that includes all the texts on the concentration camps and the Holocaust (even the fictional ones) under the condition that they have an artistic, literary quality. The second part of the thesis presents an overview of the evolution of the French Holocaust literature and its writers. Vodňany- small town in small prose of František Herites

Diplomová práce představuje dílo napomenutého žánrového realisty", 1 Františka Heritese (1851 - 1929), jež patřil do okruhu spisovatelů lumírovské generace. Těžiště práce spočívá v analýze zobrazení malého města v Heritesových drobných prozaických útvarech (arabeska, kresba, humoreska, povídka). Předlohou pro kresbu maloměstské společnosti byly Heritesovi jihočeské Vodňany, které jsou jeho rodištěm. V nich také Herites strávil podstatnou část svého života, jenž byl spjat s lékárnickou praxí, díky níž poznal postavy a typy maloměstské společnosti, o nichž později psal ve své tvorbě. V souvislosti s vodňanským pobytem Františka Heritese je připomenuto jeho přátelství s básníky Juliem Zeyerem a Otakarem Mokrým, s nimiž tvořil tzv. Vodňanský trojlístek, který zaujímá významné postavení v literární tradici města. Tu však netvoří pouze toto uskupení, což je doloženo v kapitole věnované kulturnímu a literárnímu přehledu Vodňan. The exercise regimen of high school students and its impact on body composition.

Title: The exercise regimen of high school students and its impact on body composition Objectives: The main goal is to use a literature research and measurement to identify the current high school population relationship to physical activity and the revenues resulting effect on their body composition. Methods: This work uses the methods of literature analysis and measurement. The target group, consisting of young male probands, is measured in their first year of high school (15 - 16 years). The exercise regimen was tested with pedometers and the body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance B.I.A. 2000 - M. apparatus. Results: The volume of physical activity in high school is inadequate, which shows both the average number of steps per day and percentage of body fat and the relationship between these two components. Only 2 of 9 students met the standard 10 000 steps per day and the same 2 matched standards of 11,3 % body fat, which evidently shows the relationship of these two components. Picture of woman in the Milan Begović's prose

Tato práce se převážně soustřeďuje na analýzu prozaické tvorby Milana Begoviée, která je téměř výhradně věnována postavě ženy. Snaží se zdůraznit neprávem opomíjený, avšak vyjímečný způsob autorova ojedinělého formálního i tématického zpracování ústředního motivu, jehož prostřednictvím ztělesňuje všestranně nahlížený pro fil ženské duše. V mnoha tvůrčích aspektech Begoviéův opus zcela splňuje kritéria nejvyšší úrovně světové literatury. O to více překvapuje, navzdory nepodloženému mýtu o autorově ustašovské orientaci v období druhé světové války, trvale nízký zájem, který domácí literární sféra projevuje o Begoviéovu osobitou tvorbu. Je velmi obtížné najít v chorvatské literatuře dílo, které by podobně jako Begoviéův společenský román "Giga Bariéeva" mělo schopnost aktuální výpovědi a zároveň nadčasové, aby i po uplynutí mnoha desetiletí od svého vzniku neztratilo pro současného čtenáře přitažlivost. Cílem této práce je u příležitosti sto třicátého výročí narození původem dalmatského literáta Milana Begoviée upozornit případné české zájemce o chorvatského autora na kompozičně vyjímečné zpracování dané tematiky, které nesmírně citlivě zobrazuje psychologii chorvatské ženy na počátku dvacátého století. The Soviet Union perceived by the Czech left and the pre-war writings of J. Weil

Z dnešního pohledu patří Jiří Weil mezi přední prozaiky české předválečné, zejména však poválečné literatury. Ne vždy tomu ale tak bylo. Místo v dějinách literatury bylo tomuto výraznému spisovateli se vzácnou vypravěčskou schopností, kterou mu připsal ve své recenzi na knihu Moskva-hranice už v roce 1937 Pavel Eisner, přiznáno až po dlouhé a trnité cestě životní i spisovatelské. Vše začalo vydáním románu Moskva-hranice v roce 1937, který komunistická literární kritika tvrdě odsoudila jako klepařské, pomlouvačné dílo téměř bez jakékoliv umělecké ceny. Za tímto ostrým odsouzením knihy stála vlastně výjimečnost a jedinečnost zobrazení poměrů v Sovětském svazu, jež měl autor možnost velmi dobře poznat. Naprosté novum bylo to, že pohled na překotně se vyvíjej ící zemi nebyl jako doposud v českém prostředí (zejména v komunistickém tisku) převážně prvoplánově obdivný a oslavný. Weil se ke koncepci svého románu vyj ádřil v článku Jen několik slov, kde píše: Napsal bych velmi špatný román, kdybych líčil jen světlé stránky. Podobal by se oněm románům na obj ednávku, které j sou odsuzovány právem celou sovětskou kritikou. (Weil 1937b: 309) Navíc pohled dostal netradiční uměleckou podobu. Ve své komplexnosti usiloval v mnoha detailech a bystrých postřezích ukázat vše, nejenom poměrně rychlý pokrok v průmyslu, vzdělání...

Using metaheuristics for the transportation problem

Cílem práce je aplikace ACO optimalizačních technik na úlohu obchodního cestujícího a dopravní úlohu. V teoretické části práce je provedena literární rešerše dané problematiky. Dopravní úloha je pojednávána z různých pohledů, jednak z pohledu teorie grafů a také z pohledu teorie složitosti. Dále jsou popsány hlavní typy dopravních úloh včetně metod jejich řešení. Hlavní část práce je věnována metodám hejnové inteligence ve vztahu k dopravní úloze. Metody hejnové inteligence jsou zde zevrubně popsány včetně jejich biologického pozadí. Hlavní pozornost je věnována metodám optimalizace pomocí kolonií mravenců (ACO). Jsou uvedeny hlavní používané algoritmy ACO optimalizace, a metody jak postupovat, chceme li takový algoritmus navrhnout. Praktická část práce je věnována studiu jednoho z původních ACO algoritmů ? Ant System algoritmu.Byl studován vliv parametrů ? a ? které představují relativní význam feromonové stopy a heuristické informace (vzdálenosti). Byly zkoumány možnosti studia ACO optimalizace navržené v programu Matlab na jednoprocesorovém počítači, tyto se ukázaly jako omezené, charakter úlohy vyžaduje paralelní prostředí. Přínosem práce je zjištění, že na rozdíl od výše citované práce použitá implementace algoritmu dává dobré výsledky v širokém rozmezí parametrů ? a ?. Dále byly potvrzeny některé vlastnosti ACO optimalizace uváděné v literatuře, jako je postupné zhoršování průměrného výkonu mravenců po určité době běhu. Dalším zajímavým poznatkem bylo zjištění že zcela nepatrná změna ve způsobu generování náhodného prvku v rozhodovacím mechanismu má vliv na celkový průběh optimalizace.
