Art, avant-garde and kitsch in works of Clement Greenberg and Matei Călinescu
Taltynová, Marie ; Kulka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Dadejík, Ondřej (referee)
Bachelor thesis Art, avant-garde and kitsch in works of Clement Greenberg and Matei Călinescu deals with kitsch in relation to avant-garde and to contemporary art, and to the visual arts in general. It is primarily based on the essay Avant-Garde and Kitsch by American critic Clement Greenberg and the essay Kitsch by Romanian literary scholar Matei Călinescu. The first part is devoted to outlining the concept of kitsch according to these two theorists, with an emphasis on the thinking about the origin and nature of kitsch. The second part deals with revising Greenberg's beliefs that condemn popular culture, official culture and academism for kitsch and highlights avant-garde as the only worthy manifestation of art of his time. On this basis, the work examines why avant-garde seemed like the pure opposite of kitsch in the thirties, and why to the contrary today we find that contemporary art is often influenced by kitsch.

The chapter about the viewer pursues the biological aspects of the process of seeing and perception and the relationship between the viewer and the image. The chapter about the work of the curator of the contemporary art focuses on the evolution of their part in the galleries' working process from the figure of Harald Szeemann to the term The Crisis of Curator. The gallery is introduced as a three- dimensional term: as a space for exhibitions, an institution and a mediating scope. Work Contemporary Art as a Tool of Art Marketing of the City of Prague aims to show culture not only as something saint and untouchable, but also as a very important part of a state economy, mainly in the framework of tourism. It deals with the relationship of culture and marketing, with the meaning of culture itself and with its role in the area of tourism. It looks into culture as the tool of the communication of Prague and looks critically at the contemporary situation of its presentation for tourists. There's no doubt that the presentation of Prague only through historical city centre is no longer enough in the competition of other cultural destinations and that Prague should think about changing and developing new strategy of communication. As the very tool of this change could work contemporary arts, which is used by many other cultural destinations around the world (Berlin, London, NYC), which Prague can also offer and which shows openess and a better place for life. The Prague City Hall has been financing those alternative cultural projects lately and by doing that has started to present Prague not only as a historical city centre, but also as a creative and dynamic place. This work discusses the reasons why The City Hall has been doing so, if on purpose or unconsciously, and by that tries...

Marketing Strategies of Art Trade with a Focus on Contemporary Czech Art Scene
Peško Banzetová, Michaela ; Horáček, Radek (referee) ; Svoboda, František (referee) ; Rais, Karel (advisor)
Contemporary art trade in the Czech Republic has been regarded as a private area accessible only to a few insiders. So far no adequate literature about this field has existed, the marketing strategies used within it were, not only from the outside perspective, quite unclear. This work shows that it is not a secret sphere. On the contrary, it is a part of the market, which has the effect that the more you talk about it openly, the better impact it has on the whole society. The author presents the current situation in this field, its historical context, and openly discusses the long-term marketing strategies of gallerists who work with contemporary artists. On the basis of case studies from abroad she also shows other possible ways how to bring society closer to contemporary art by means of some specific marketing tools.
