The case of weirs: Media discourse analysis
Vaňhalová, Adéla ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Vodáková, Alena (referee)
The author was concerned with the media discourse of the theme of weirs on the river Labe in newspapers MF Dnes and Ústecký deník during the period of ten years. The used methods were quantitative and qualitative content analyses. Emphasis was placed on the types of arguments used in the discourse and also on the means of argumentation [Schopenhauer 1991, Weston 2001]. Analysis discovered two basic kinds of discourse: expert and emotional. To both of these discourses were linked special kinds of means of argumentation. The expert discourse was constructed as a pure and fair argument. The emotional discourse was constructed as an insidious argument. The main conclusion derived from the analysis was about the game frames [Goffman 1999] of two sides in discourse: advocates and opponents of the weirs. To the advocates was ascribed expert economic discourse which created their dominant game frame. The advocates persuade the public about their truth through economic discourse. The opponents were first constructed as dominant in the game frame of expert ecological discourse. During time their ecological game frame was redefined by the advocates and lost its persuading power. The opponents found new game frame: "petition" political discourse. "Petition" political discourse is till now the dominant game frame of the...

The Czech multimetric fish based index (CZ-FBI) was developed recently. The aim of CZ-FBI is to assess the ecological potential of heavily modified and artificial water bodies and to detect ecosystems, particularly their specific components, in unsatisfactory conditions. This article describes steps of CZ-FBI development. Since the philosophy used, particular events presenting the results, to recent stage. CZ-FBI is a part of certified methodology of the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic and the comparison with other assessment methodologies within a geographical intercalibration group is in process.

Life Cycle Assessment of water treatetment technology
Cabejšková, Zuzana ; Kočí, Vladimír (advisor) ; Pivokonský, Martin (referee)
Charles University in Prague Faculty of Science Institute for Environmental Studies Ecology and Environmental Protection Environmental Protection Bachelor Thesis - Abstract Life Cycle Assessment of Water Treatment Technology Posuzování životního cyklu výroby pitné vody Author: Zuzana Cabejšková Supervisor: Doc. Ing. Vladimír Kočí, Ph.D. Prague, May 2012 Abstract (English) This bachelor thesis consists of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of two water treatment plants (WTP) in the Czech Republic. The first WTP is situated in Hrdějovice in South Bohemia and treats underground raw water. The second WTP is in Central Bohemia and treats surface water from the Želivka reservoir. The pumping of raw water and its subsequent treatment were considered for the purposes of LCA; other phases of the life cycle of potable water such as distribution weren't taken into account. Waterworks companies provided data on consumption of energy and materials. Based on this data, the environmental impacts of 1m3 of treated water were calculated and a comparison of the two WTPs within different impact categories was performed. It was found that WTP Hrdějovice has a four-time lower overall environmental impact than WTP Želivka. Global Warming Potential, Acidification Potential and Abiotic Depletion of fossil fuels were identified as the...

Analysis of primary photosynthetic processes in conifers: A comparison of selected methods and their possible utilisation for the study of genetic variability
Palovská, Markéta ; Holá, Dana (advisor) ; Albrechtová, Jana (referee)
Conifers are important both ecologically and socioeconomically, however, same parts of their biology are not that well researched. This includes genetics and breeding and partly even physiology. Because quantitative genetic analyzes applied in breeding necessitate an analysis of a large number of samples, and conventional methods of analysis are quite time-consuming, certain parameters describing e.g. the activity of photosynthetic electron-transport chain (ETC) are considered for such use. Several methods of the measurement of the activity of photosynthetic ETC exist, but there are some problems with their usage in conifers. I studied this issue from different points of view in three parts of this thesis. 1) I compared the photosynthetic ETC activity in 8 species of conifers using chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurements on intact needles and polarographic measurements in isolated chloroplasts. Each method brought different information. 2) I measured Chl fluorescence parameters, reflectance spectra and pigment content in 536 genetically defined trees of Pinus sylvestris L. Many parameters showed relatively high genetic variability and heritability. I have also determined the suitability of various reflectance indices to estimate pigment and water content of needles. 3) I have optimized the...

Small boilers as a source for family houses
Studnicki, Jakub ; Katolický, Jaroslav (referee) ; Štětina, Josef (advisor)
The paper summarizes the basic parameters of boilers with low power for use in family homes. The boilers are divided into chapters according to the used fuel (gas, solid fuels, liquid fuels, biomass, pellets...). For each boiler there are basic characteristics, dimensions, methods of attachment to the wall or floor and if hot water heating is integrated. It is also characterized by a boiler heating system, i.e. the flue requirements, size and location of the water supply for heating. In another part there is an assessment of economic and environmental aspects of boilers. From an economic perspective I focus on a fuel economy and from an ecological mainly on the ratio of fuel efficiency and pollutants emitted into the air.

International Cooperation in Assertion of Sustainable Development Policy
Zhuravlyova, Yelena
Nowadays, in contrast to the situation at the beginning of the ecology movement - the late seventies and early eighties, there is general social consensus that ecological planning and construction should not be a short lived whim but rather long term objectives for all groups involved in building. There is no shortage of concepts, planning and proposals. However, concrete examples of the magnitude required - i.e. anything over and above a detached house or a small settlement of 10 to 20 dwellings - these are still few and far between. The vast majority of new building, and also of urban renewal measures, comes nowhere near putting into practice the ecological design principles which could be implemented in today's world.

Sculptural object in cultural -landspace reflections of not only public space
Kačírková, Pavla ; Babyrádová, Hana (referee) ; Sedlák, Jan (referee) ; Havlík, Vladimír (referee) ; Ambrůz, Jan (advisor)
The aim of the dissertation is to understand the rural environment, using the specific example of the Šarovy village, in all its uniqueness and wholeness of its built-up and rural zones. It points out the pressing problems of current landscape, such as the alienation of man and landscape, land consolidation, or bad state policy. The case study describes the activities of the citizens association Jinákrajina in the area of Šarovy and nearby villages. It describes individual activities of the citizens association (sculptures, avenues and trees, interesting places in the landscape, nature trails, events, and plans for the village), the reasons for their origination, the reactions they caused, and the consequences. The objectives of the research aim to show that it is art that can be the joining element between ecological and social approaches.

Development of industrial floors with utilization of by-product
Radějová, Lucie ; Durica,, Tibor (referee) ; Bydžovský, Jiří (referee) ; Ševčík, Milan (referee) ; Drochytka, Rostislav (advisor)
This work deals with the use of waste materials in the development of new industrial floors. The main task of this work is to choose a suitable waste materials, and design a new material using such materials, while achieving the required physico-mechanical properties. The aim of this work is also to verify the effects of process application, suitable microfiller and final coat and propose a suitable alternative industrial floors, which would not only be in terms of economic efficiency, but also in terms of ecological suitable replacement for commercial products.

Selecting Criteria for the assessment of the disproportionate costs associated with the implementation and objectives of The Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC
Škodová, Ivana ; Vojáček, Ondřej (advisor) ; Slavíková, Lenka (referee)
This paper tries to answer the question related to the implementation of one of Europe's most influential EU-directives, the Water Framework Directive. The Directive requires Member States to achieve good ecological potential and good surface water chemical status for bodies of water until year 2015. If the states cannot achieve those objectives within this period, then there may be grounds for exemptions from the requirement to prevent further deterioration of to achieve good status under specific conditions. One of those conditions could be that, the completing the improvements within the timescale would be disproportionately expensive. Question which is examined in this paper is, what criteria would be most appropriate for determining the disproportionate costs. Based on the review of most WFD-related studies and EU legislation are selected criteria, which should be used for the assessment of the disproportionate costs.

Conscience of the ecological crisis and its reflection in lifestyle
Mlynář, Jakub ; Suša, Oleg (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
In this paper author makes an attempt to describe the development of the man - nature relationship in the Western thought and also the reflections of this problem, using the "domination of man over nature" metaphor. He concludes the problem of "culture versus nature" duality on the example of philosophical and historical research on the cultural basis of ecological crisis. He follows describing the birth of early conservationist movement (H. Thoreau, J. Muir), ecological ethic (A. Schweitzer) and transformation of this concepts into various fields: ecofeminism, social ecology (M. Bookchin) and deep ecology (A. Naess). Author reflects the position of environmental issues in the academic discussion as well as the incorporation of the ecological concepts into sociological theory (environmental sociology). In the final part of the paper the issue of individual life-style reflection of the environmental problems is opened, using the conception of "voluntary simplicity" (D. Elgin) or "postmaterial values" (R. Inglehart). The paper is finished with critical views on the "voluntary simplicity" phenomenon, the issue of "privatization of the ecological crisis" and commercionalization of the ecological lifestyle.
