Currently published statistics focused on the area of software projects are very disturbing. It is alarming that, according to research company Standish Group only 32% of IT projects end successfully. The percentage of cancelled projects, 24%, is even more disturbing. The applied methodology should contribute to the increase success of the software engineering projects. Statistics show that the methodology applied in the work sphere, is currently used by more than 50% of firms. This work shows the development of specific software in a small IT company, which currently is not supported by any methodology of IS / ICT. The primary objective of this work is the evaluation of the methodology best suited to the needs of business presented. The first chapter of the theoretical part deals with the issues of software engineering and is focused mainly on the area of IT projects success rates and related critical factors of software engineering. The main part of the theoretical block is devoted to methodologies of IS / ICT. This passage is particularly concentrating on the meaning of methodologies in the management of development projects. It also focuses on comparing agile and rigorous methodologies and deals with the assessment of appropriate methodologies for the development of IS / ICT in small businesses. The first part of the practical unit focuses on the introduction of the presented company. The following chapters are devoted to analyzing the current state of software engineering of the client, leading to the detection of the major problems of current development. The analysis is followed by chapter, which is devoted to the presentation of five agile methodologies which were selected on the basis of criteria based on client's specific requirements and needs. The final part is devoted to the evaluation of methodologies based on meeting the given criteria and according to the level of support solutions to the problems analyzed. Agile methodologies get more and more into the awareness of project managers. Long-term and unsuccessful projects can mean big risk for companies. Especially in highly competitive industries rapid delivery of a functional product is preferred to comprehensive documentation. For efficient management of agile development appropriate tools are needed. This bachelor thesis is based on these tools. It describes the current state in the market in these instruments, explaining what it can offer to agile teams and it also represents the best-known products of companies like Rally Software, VersionOne, TargetProcess and ExtremePlanner. For product comparison there are appropriate criteria proposed in the thesis. The results of the comparison are identified advantages and disadvantages of each instrument for both the community and the enterprise version of the software.
Social aspects of agile software development methodologies
Čížek, Pavel ; Buchalcevová, Alena (advisor) ; Balada, Jakub (referee)
Traditional methodologies of software development are burdened with number of problems, especially its complexity, bureaucracy and sticking on detailed processes defined in advance. This all often mean overtiming and overpricing the project as well as other negative effects. Agile methodologies of software development pursue solving such problems. They are built on principles of team-work, communication and developers' relations and sharing their knowledge. These values are one of the most important in agile development concept. This thesis's target is to identify and describe those principles of agile software development which impact development team functioning, working motivation of developers and focus on the project goals. Reader is first shortly familiarized with general theory of working motivation, team-working and leading to achieve the target. Then particular agile development principles are analyzed and the impact on developers' motivation, whole team functioning and focusing on the project goals is described. Another target of the thesis is to identify requirements on agile software developers, to explain what the need of them lies in and how the absence of these personal characteristics would impact whole team's productivity and the development progress. The last target of this thesis is to examine agile development as a whole. A SWOT analysis is used to achieve this. It states the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities (advantages) and risks of agile development. There is a list of 11 serious mistakes that can take place in the agile development process and heighten the risk of the project fail stated at the end of the thesis.
