Kosovo - On the way to independence

The main aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to provide more informations about declarations of independence in 1991 and 2008 and find out the historical facts which resulted in Kosovo declaration of independence in 2008 with putting emphasis on historical developments in the 90s, when the amount of conflicts between Kosovo Serbs and Kosovo Albanians was increasing.

IPA Bridge on the Danube: Cross-border Co-operation and Social Reconstruction in Slavonia and Vojvodina

The relations between Croatia and Serbia are determining for regional peace and stability and for the course of the EU enlargement in the Western Balkans. The Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA) is the funding mechanism designed for the implementation of the EU's enlargement policy in the Western Balkans. This research investigates the extent to which IPA has integrated to the local cross- border initiatives in culture and youth and has fostered social reconstruction between Croats and Serbs in Slavonia (Croatia) and Vojvodina (Serbia). Co-operation in the cultural sector is an important element of social reconstruction, as it favours contacts and the erosion of antagonistic prejudices against the other ethnic group. The objective of this research is defined as two-fold, firstly to test a model of cross-border co-operation devised from EU integration theories and, secondly to provide an accurate picture of the cross-border initiatives in Slavonia and Vojvodina based on ground-level experience. The analysis of the data collected shows mixed results. The Merchant or the Vicar? The Role of Values and Interests in the Dutch EU Enlargement Policy

This diploma thesis examines with the Dutch attitude towards enlargement of the European Union. In Netherlands the EU enlargement is a politically sensitive issue. Dutch foreign policy is traditionally closely connected with the concept of "merchant and the vicar", reflecting both values of the society and national interests. Interestingly the attitude of the government, reflecting the public opinion, is much more conservative compared to other member states and strictly support the democratic conditionality as the core strategy of the EU to induce candidate states to comply with its human rights and democracy standards. Netherlands gives also special value to the need to give particular regards to the current absorption capacity of EU. The main purpose of the thesis is to evaluate to what extent is the official attitude of the Dutch government towards enlargement shaped by either interests or values of the society as a whole. I put the current Dutch attitude in the context of the current development in Serbia, as the most significant candidate state form the region of Western Balkans and Iceland. Deployment of Czech and Slovak armed forces in the UNPROFOR mission

The bachelor thesis aims to analyze the participation of Czechoslovak and later Czech and Slovak units operating in the territory of former Yugoslavia within the UNPROFOR mission. The core goal si to compare a contribution of separated units after the breakup of Czechoslovakia occurred. The research focuses on contribution in fulfillment of UNPROFOR sub-goals, because of there are not reliable benchmarks for measuring success of particular missions's segmants. Serb Minority in Kosovo and Relations between Kosovo and Serbia, 2008 - 2013

The thesis is analyzing relations between the Serb minority in Kosovo, Kosovo proper and Serbia from 2008 to 2013 by using Robert Brubaker's "Triadic Nexus" concept that defines a relation between a national minority, a nationalizing state and an external national homeland. The Triadic Nexus will be supplemented by David Smith's "Quadratic Nexus" concept with the addition of an international actor that would be the United Nations and the European Union. In the north and the southeast of Kosovo lives a huge Serb community that does not recognize Kosovo's independence since 2008. From 2008 to 2013 Kosovo authorities were trying to integrate Serb minority into Kosovo society, however in most cases unsuccessfully. Kosovo Serbs kept relations with Serbia, especially thanks to the existence of parallel Serb institutions in these parts of Kosovo. The position of the Serb minority in the Kosovo`s society is analyzed through the legal framework and their (non)integration into the administrative and political institutions of the Kosovo proper. This should provide hints if and how the Serb minority in Kosovo was or was not persecuted. Evaluation of humanitarian intervention in FRY in 1999

This thesis deals with the humanitarian bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999. The aim is to evaluate the NATO operation called Allied Force. The evaluation will consist two parts. First, the operation will be subjected to analysis in terms of Responsibility to Protect communication, which seeks to define the circumstances under which it is possible to attack a sovereign state in the name of human rights. Then the different objectives of the operation, as defined by NATO will be examined. The aim will be to determine whether the intentions of NATO were met and if not, why. In order to evaluate the Allied Force operation, it is necessery to analyze what was happening in this region throughout the history before 1999. This work briefly describes the history of Kosovo, then examines in detail the period from 80 years of the 20th century to 1999. Part of the work also deals with the ethnic wars in Balkan in the early 90s and the consequences that they had for Kosovo. The important part is to analyze how NATO positions formed from spring 1998 until June 1999, when the operation was completed.

Yogaslavia in a reflexion of Czechoslovakian Protectorate press in 1941-1943

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the references of Yugoslavia (the area of erstwhile Yugoslavian Kingdom) in selected Czech periodical literature of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (Národní politika, České slovo a Venkov) in years 1941-1943. The emphasis is on political, economical and social events, about which the protectorate press informed. At the same time, the differences between approaches of these periodicals to such topics and events are compared. It can be classified within social sciences as a part of political science, specifically as a part of comparative political science and electoral studies. The subject of this thesis is electoral design and electoral engineering. Its cases are political and electoral systems in the Post-Yugoslav area up to 2012. The importance of this topic consists in the fact that it is not entirely explored topic. On that account it deserves attention from both empirical and theoretical perspective. The research of electoral design and electoral engineering is one of the most promising courses of contemporary political science. The role of three key players in unleashing of civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its beginnings

This thesis analyzes the share of the three former presidents of the republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia, who had in the case of civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which took place from 1992 to 1995. The Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II. Work is focused on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Processed period corresponds to the years of 1989-1992, i.e. the time the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the establishment of new republics. In view of the fact that attention is paid to the life of presidents, i.e. Slobodan Milosevic, Franjo Tudjman and Alija Izetbegovic, the work is focused on the period of 50./60. years too. Emphasis is put on their political life and the gradual acquisition of power. It is necessary at the outset to remind disintegration of Yugoslavia, in order to focus on further development. In conclusion, attention is paid to the agreements relating to any division of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was completed by the effort of Bosnian Serbs and Croats to join the greatest part of the country to the Serbia and Croatia.
