The picture of the Conference of Security and Co-operation in Europe in 1975 in the period press
Niedermeierová, Jana ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis The Image of The Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe in 1975 in the period press aims to describe how the Czechoslovak daily newspapers Rudé právo, Lidová demokracie, Práce, Mladá fronta and Svobodné slovo of that time informed about the historical event called Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE). It covers the period from the 1st of July 1975 to the 31st of August 1975. In the middle of this period, the last and most important part of the two-year conference took place. The representatives of the 35 participating countries signed there the Final Act of CSCE, which summed up the principles of international co- operation. The analytical part of this bachelor thesis deals with a portrayal of the topic by printed media considering both their content and formal aspects. It also examines the way political propaganda and manipulation impacted articles about CSCE. The theoretical part contains a chapter on the conference itself. This event was important for history because it stressed the issue of human rights and contributed to the end of the Cold War and to breakup of the Soviet Bloc. The theoretical part also describes the period of the normalization in Czechoslovakia, within which CSCE was held. It also deals with repressive media policy in this...
The Role of the U.S. in Iraq-Iran War (1980-1988)
Hrabcová, Klára ; Zukerstein, Jaroslav (advisor) ; El-Ahmadieh, Jakub (referee)
The Islamic revolution in 1979 led to the end of the Shah's regime in Iran and the establisment of the Islamic republic. Also, this revolution have had a crucial impact on the foreign policy of the new regime. Under Khomeini's regime, the diplomatic relations with the United States were cancelled. The U.S. lost major ally in the Gulf region and the US influence in the Middle East was threatened. Also, the Islamic revolution led to the deterioration of relations with Iraq, whose leader Saddam Hussein undertook a military intervention to Iran in September 1980. The United States had supported the Iraqi regime from the beginning of the conflict. The main question of this thesis is what reasons led the U.S. to support Hussein's regime, which was seen by the U.S. as hostile regime until the outbreak of this war, and what were the main intentions of the US foreign policy during the conflict. Based on the analysis of the role of the US in this war, this thesis conclude that the main motives for US involvement were the loss of main ally, the fear of spreading the Islamic revolution, and also Soviet influence, and the protection of US oil interests in the region. Furthermore, the thesis analyzes the evolution of American strategy, which was focused on protecting US interests in the region, strengthening its...
Political and social reflection of rivalry and cooperation in space
Nitra, Vojtěch ; Rak, Jiří (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
The paper focuses on the so called "space race" which lasted more than twenty years. This is a rather broad term covering competition between the two superpowers (the US and the USSR) during the cold war. Therefore, this thesis pays only minimal attention to particular projects and entirely leaves out technical details. Instead, it explores efforts to venture into space as representing the apotheosis of scientific combat. It perceives competition and collaboration in this area to be symbolic manifestations of the rivalry and collaboration taking place between the superpowers in the late 20th century. Attention is paid chiefly to the conditions and causes underlying the rivalry but also to its consequences as well as the impact made by overcoming symbolic milestone in space on the general global politics. The paper thus deals with political, economic, social and scientific conditions of space programmes and presentation of the achievements attained. It describes the process of human venturing (especially by the US and the USSR) into space from its very beginning. It chronologically looks at prior stages to end up in our contemporary era and provides an outlook for the future.
The comparison of the western policy of the FRG during the reign of Konrad Adenauer and Willy Brandt
Handlíř, Jakub ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis is dealing with the comparison of the Western Policy of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) during the chancellorship of Konrad Adenauer and Willy Brandt. For the purpose of this thesis and because of time and spatial limitations I defined the Western Policy of the FRG as a policy of the FRG toward the organisation and states of the so-called western world, precisely as a relationship of the western Germany toward the european integration process, NATO and as bilateral relationships between Gemany and Great Britain, Frace and USA. This thesis aims only on the time of Adenauer's (1949 - 63) and Brandt's (1969 - 74) chancellorship. It doesn't aim on the time when these men carried out other functions than the function of a chancellor. It also doesn't aim on the policy toward other western organisations or institutions, on the policy toward the so-called eastern world nor on the policy of the Eastern Germany.

Realism and the Nixon Administration: Triangular Diplomacy as a Tool of US Foreign Policy
Moravčík, Vladimír ; Jeřábek, Martin (advisor) ; Kotvalová, Anna (referee)
Abstract The thesis deals with the US foreign policy under Richard Nixon. More specifically, it examines the US rapprochement with Communist China (PRC) and the triangular diplomatic relations between the US, USSR, and PRC. The thesis draws from the realist theories, particularly the offensive and defensive branches of neorealism represented by John Mearsheimer and Kenneth Waltz. The thesis applies the theoretical concept of wedging strategies as power-balancing tools on the selected US foreign policy. The thesis conducts a qualitative case study using the process-tracing method. A causal mechanism derived from the concept of wedging strategies is theorized and further applied in the analysis. The analysis of the US foreign policy towards China examines the individual traces in the theorized mechanisms. The results of the study show that the US broke the Sino-Soviet alliance using a defensive wedging strategy by exploiting the Sino-Soviet split, resulting in PRC's dealignment with the USSR. The US reapproached the PRC and swayed the Chinese leadership with strategic guarantees tacitly aimed against the USSR. These guarantees were ultimately projected into the Shanghai Communique of 1972.

The influence of the Taiwan's democratization on the cross-strait relations and on the prospect for completion of the Chinese unification
Lenhart, Erik ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Andělová, Petra (referee)
In my master thesis I analyze the influence of Taiwan's democratization on Cross- Strait relations. The thesis is structurally divided into three main periods: the pre- democratization period, democratization period and the period since the first power alternation in Taiwan. The first chapter analyzes the emergence of the Cross-Strait issue, the period of the Japanese colonization, the Post-Second World War Period, the Chinese Civil War and Cold War period until second half 80s. It points out the main external and internal factors, which influenced the Cross- Strait relations development and also the development of both Chinese states. The subject of the second chapter is the Taiwan's democratization and its internal and external leverage. Based on A. Przeworski's Theory of Games I am comparing the Taiwan's democratization to the Tiananmen incident. At the end of the second chapter I am comparing political system and regime of both Chinese states and I am pointing out salience of Taiwan for China. The final chapter examines the period of the first power alternation in Taiwan and how it influenced the Cross- Strait relations. It analyzes the issue of Taiwanese identity and sovereignty. It points out the three most common sovereignty interpretations over Taiwan. This chapter also entails an analysis...
