The First Czechoslovak Republic from the Point of View of the Theory of Consociational Democracy
Palkosková, Lucie ; Gelnarová, Jitka (advisor) ; Novák, Miroslav (referee)
Bachelor thesis "The First Czechoslovak Republic from the Point of View of the Theory of Consociational democracy" applies the theory of consociational democracy to the first Czechoslovak Republic. This work describes a form of consociational democracy, as was defined by Arend Lijphart in 60 years. There are presented the operating conditions of the theory and its main features. Then, these characteristics - grand coalition, proportionality, segmental autonomy and mutual veto - are applied to the case of the first Czechoslovak Republic. The work tries to answer whether during the brief existence of the Czechoslovak Republic were filled with four basic conditions of the theory of consociational democracy. Based on an analysis of the political system in Czechoslovakia and analysis of national, economic and social problems, it was found that the first Czechoslovak Republic partially fulfills two conditions of consociational democracy (grand coalition and proportionality), but the remaining two conditions (segmental autonomy and mutual veto) do not at all.
First Czechoslovak Republic in a context of consociational theory
Zavřel, Filip ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Gelnarová, Jitka (referee)
This bachelor thesis called "First Czechoslovak Republic in the context of theory of consociational democracy" deals with the analysis of the political system of the first Czechoslovak Republic in order to determine wheter and/or to what extent this system contains components which are characteristic of the theory of consociational democracy, as described by the Dutch political scientist Arend Lijphart in sixties of 20th century. It focuses on the analysis of the system in the fields of fragmentation, electoral and party system, the results of elections to the National Assembly, negotiations of political elites and the formation and functioning of coalition governments. It's based on the thesis that the political system of the first Czechoslovak Republic included components later associated with the theory of consociational democracy, especially in the form of a grand coalition goverment (with the participation of representatives of the German minority since 1926) and relatively long-term systemic stability, achieved despite extensive fragmentation of society, which was cleaved especially nationally. The period covered is the whole era of the first republic, thus since the year 1918 untill 1938.
The Personality of the Bishop of Ceske Budejovice Simon Barta (1920-1940)
ŠMÍD, Marek
The thesis deals with the life, work and activities of the bishop of České Budějovice Šimon Bárta (1864-1940) in the period of 1920-1940, when he headed the diocese of České Budějovice. The study is based on sources from the state archive in Třeboň (fund of bishop archive), contemporary periodicals, official Church documents and numerous literature. Bárta's life is set in a historical and religious context of the First and Second Czechoslovak Republics and Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, while in thematic blocks attempts to reconstruct the episcopal activity of the eighth bishop of České Budějovice. The significant part is dedicated to Bárta's administration of the diocese, organizing the Eucharistic Congress in 1927, changes in the local seminary, national tensions and the bishop's position in the hierarchy of the Czechoslovak bishops. The thesis thus represents an interesting contribution to the history of the Church in the first half of 20th century.

Conciliation extra-parliamentary bodies of the first Czechoslovak Republic
Marečková, Adéla ; Šušlíková, Lada (advisor) ; Adler, Tomáš (referee)
My bachelor's thesis "Conciliation extra-parliamentary bodies of the first Czechoslovak Republic" focuses on informal groups that emerged during the first Czechoslovak Republic from 1918 to 1938. These extra-parliamentary bodies had mainly stabilization character and helped to achieve consensus across political parties. The first was "the Five", group of leaders of five major political parties. "The Five" existed from 1921 to 1925 when the first government of Antonín Švehla collapsed. The second one was the Castle Group that formed around president T. G. Masaryk and Edvard Beneš. The Castle Group supporters were certain politicians, intellectuals and journalists. The Castle Group was closer to socialist parties, while "the Five" to civil parties. The Tradesmen's bank group, which operated in the economic sector, was quite similar to the named power centres. Its main representative was a banker Jaroslav Preiss. Despite their not very democratic character "the Five" and the Castle Group helped to sustain democracy in the first Czechoslovak Republic.
Depictions of Subcarpathian Ruthenia in the Czech newspapers of the Czechoslovak First Republic, 1919-1922: Developing Public Support for the Refusal of the Rusyn Right to Autonomy?
Brown, Geoffrey ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (referee)
Geoffrey Brown Abstract: In 1919 the Rusyns of Subcarpathian Ruthenia and Rusyn immigrants living in the United States decided that joining the newly-created Czechoslovak Republic offered them the best possible conditions for a stable future. They agreed to the union on the condition that the Rusyns would be granted the widest possible degree of political autonomy, and this autonomy was then guaranteed by the Treaty of Saint Germain signed in September 1919. Once the territory of Subcarpathian Ruthenia had joined Czechoslovakia, the Government in Prague decided that the Rusyn people were incapable of meeting the responsibilities of governing their own territory, since at the end of World War One they had been among the poorest and least culturally developed of all the nations of Austro-Hungary. The Rusyn leaders, particularly the territory's first Governor, Gregory Zhatkovich, protested to no avail against the Czechoslovak government's refusal to grant the Rusyns their legal right to political autonomy. Prior to the war the Czech public had practically no knowledge of Rusyns or their territory of Subcarpathian Ruthenia. During the first three years of the Czechoslovak state, the Czech media published many newspaper articles which highlighted or exaggerated the primitive nature of the Rusyn people,...

The thesis was written mainly based on research of the resources in the State District Archives in Benešov (a branch office of the State Regional Archives in Prague) and of a wide range of relevant specialized literature. The introduction consists of a chapter offering a complex summary of the most important moments and changes in the development of Benešov during the examined period. Apart from the history of Benešov, it also shows the role of the town in the region and the relation of its development to other municipalities in the country. The focal point of the thesis lays in the extensive yet lucid chapters examining architectural development of the town (the essential moments, context, but also particular interesting buildings) and the development of its infrastructure...

FRANTIŠEK MACHNÍK - The life of Agrarian politician and minister of the national defence
KOPECKÝ, Lukáš
Submitted diploma thesis brings the life fates of František Machník, last political minister of the national defence of the first Czechoslovak republic. He was one of the political symbols of the army in 30´s as the representative of the Agrarian party. He soon found that the possible new army conflict among nations could be very real. The whole European effort of keeping Versailles´ peace system was absolutely desperate. Machník became propagator of the nation´s military ability, he popularized the army in the public view and he inspired thousands of people for her. He gave her technic and institutional laws. He was interested in the financial support of the building of the border´s fortification. This diploma work tries as first to map Machník´s life from the very beginnings over his studies, teacher´s and school director´s career and MP activities. It looks on his early enter to the Agrarian party and his work for Agrarian academics. The three - years ministerial career emphasizes two important moments - the law of the national defence and Machník´s decree. WWII brought him first suffering - the Gestapo investigation and then he was sentenced to death and this was changed to life imprisonment. The author of this work is also interested in Machník´s postwar investigation and trial by the National Court in the year 1947. It was followed with the communistic trial in 1952 and 5 years imprisonment. The end of the thesis concentrates on the sad Machník´s retirement after the amnesty in 1953.
