Hrušková, Magdaléna ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Machart, Filip (referee)
The Bachelor Thesis "Struggle for democracy and human rights in Cuba - the role of dissidents and non-governmental organizations" concerns a role of dissident movement in a possible democratic transition. Firstly, the paper analyses the development of theories of democratization with detailed focus on the role of ordinary people and on the enforcement of civil movement by non-governmental organizations based on studies from Ackerman, Karatnycky, Welzel and Inglehart. Regarding Cuban dissident movement, on which the thesis focuses as an instrumental study, it examines every important part and challenge that the movement is obliged to face in order to become a mass movement. Moreover, the further parts concentrate on international democratic promotion, more specifically, on the American embargo, as an example of economic sanctions, and on the Cuban projects of two particular NGOs, as an example of diplomatic pressure towards wider respect of human rights and as an example of the strengthening process of civil movement. In the conclusion, the thesis discusses possible catalyzers of democratic change in Cuba, including the role of dissident movement, reinforced by projects of NGOs, as a crucial player in possible process of democratization.
The American Foreign Policy towards Cuba between 1959 and 1963: Causes, Manifestations and Consequences
Chocholová, Anna ; Anděl, Petr (advisor) ; Mikulík, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the American foreign policy towards Cuba in the period between the Cuban Revolution and the death of the U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It aims to answer the question why did the United States choose an aggressive policy towards the new Cuban regime, what were the results of their strategy, whether a more accommodating attitude would have potentially represented a better solution, and whether considering the circumstances the U.S. could have adopted such an attitude. It analyzes individual events and aspects of this period, led by the Bay of Pigs invasion, in order to find out how much influence did the United States have on Fidel Castro's turn to Communism and the Soviet Union, and whether they were partly responsible for triggering the Cuban missile crisis. The author comes to the conclusion that the American foreign policy towards Cuba between 1959 and 1963 was ill-chosen, because it was not only unable to obtain its main goal of overthrowing Fidel Castro, but also forced the Cuban regime to radicalise and closely cooperate with the Soviet Union. At the same time, she argues that the enforcement and implementation of a more accommodating policy, which probably would have in the end benefited both countries, represented a very difficult task for the U.S....

Cuba, The United States of America, media, Granma, The Washington Post, Cuban-American relations, ideology
Kadlecová, Gabriela ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Šmíd, Milan (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares how American media, particularly The Washington Post, informed about important world events with the information published in the Cuban daily newspaper Granma. Observed time range is June 21 to July 21 2009. The Cuban daily newspaper Granma comes out worse in this comparison because ideology of the Cuban Communist Party is clear in the majority of its articles. Even tough the newspaper regularly published articles not burdened by ideology, for example about sports or culture, in many texts that appeared in the political section in the followed period, ideology was clear and they were not written in an objective way. Most tinted articles were published in connection with the "Cuban Five" and the coup d'état in Honduras. However, neither was The Washington Post fully objective: too much space was dedicated to some topics, which proves for example the death of Michael Jackson. A similar case represents the economic situation, to which even several articles a day were dedicated. In addition, it obviously gave priority to the United States of America and overlooked events in the rest of the world.
Discussion on US sanctions against Cuba at the U.N. General Assembly
Šplíchalová, Eva ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Machoň, Miloslav (referee)
The United States imposed the longest lasting sanction regime on Cuba in 1960 as a result of strained relations in recent years. Each US administration modified form of the sanctions regime, depending on the attitude toward the Cuban issue. General Assembly, the highest authority of the UN, adopts not legally binding but politically significant resolutions. Resolution condemning US sanctions regime has been adopted annually since 1992. Discussion on changes of the sanction regime in the General Assembly is a sign of reflection on current events and unrigid process of resolutions adoption. The main purpose is to determine whether the changes of the sanction regime were mentioned in the discussions on the adoption of the resolutions. The result of the analysis shows the reflection of the events in the speeches of ambassadors. The amount of mentioned events in speeches depends whether they were positive or negative step toward easing the embargo, and also how important the event was.

Importance of the European members of the CMEA for Foreign Trade of Czechoslovakia in the seventies of the 20th century.
Němeček, Michal ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Dufek, Pavel (referee)
The thesis analyzes the influence of non-european members of the CMEA, who came in the seventies, on foreign trade Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. It starts with brief characteristics of foreign trade and periodization of the development of Comecon organization. It also mentions the characteristics of foreign trade of Czechoslovakia in the 70s of the 20th century. Then focuses on the analysis of statistical data on foreign trade between Czechoslovakia and Cuba and then between Czechoslovakia and Vietnam. This work attempts to answer whether the accession of non-european states to the Comecon organization was of great importance to increase CSSR´s trade turnover with these countries. The answer to this question is partly unclear - Cuba's accession to the organization, was of great importance to increase amount of foreign trade with Czechoslovakia, whereas in Vietnam I can not say with certainty that the accession resulted in an increase in amount of foreign trade because it grew annually at a high pace before the accession of Vietnam to the CMEA.
