Fialová, Tereza ; Lehmannová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Žáková, Gabriela (referee)
The diploma thesis Global Terrorism and New Media: The Case Study of the Islamic State examines the use of modern means of communication and technologies by global terrorists on the case of the terrorist organization Islamic State. The main hypothesis of this study is the claim that the Islamic State is using a very sophisticated communication strategy that, in combination with new technologies, allows its global scope. Through its propaganda methods, it tries not only to manipulate the audience and attract potential followers, but also demoralize and intimidate its enemies. The combination of two qualitative research methods, the case study and thematic analysis, enabled a more detailed examination of the Islamic State communication strategy and its propaganda messages in a selected data sample.

Růžičková, Kristýna ; Eichler, Jan (advisor) ; Dubský, Zbyněk (referee)
The Kurds are considered to be the largest nation without their own state. In Turkey, the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), considered to be a terrorist organization, has been struggling for Kurdish self-determination for over 30 years. However, the PKK changed its demands and mainly its tactics - it has begun to attempt a political solution to the Kurdish issue. With the onset of a global threat in the form of the so-called Islamic State (ISIL), the PKK began to engage in the fight against it. Its role in this struggle is the main theme of the thesis. The aim of this work is to analyze the role of the PKK in the fight against ISIL on the basis of the characteristics of terrorism, the development of the Kurdish question in Turkey, and the threat posed by ISIL. The thesis concludes that the PKK has a very significant role in this fight, not only because of its experience in fighting the Turkish government. Thanks to its contribution, the PKK also aspires to be removed from the US and European list of terrorist organizations.

The Caliphate on the Halt: Explaining the Stalling Campaign of the Islamic State in Libya
Lovecký, Tomáš ; Ludvík, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee)
This diploma thesis examines the prospects of the Islamic State's expansion to Libya. Using the method of process tracing, the author assesses the campaign of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and establishes 6 factors he calls ‚enablers' that played key roles in facilitating its success - the ideology, exploitation of state breakdown and governance, funding, combat know-how, propaganda, and sectarianism. He dedicates special attention to the problematics of sectarianism and the way the Islamic State made instrumental use of it in both of these countries. The author then proceeds to assess the viability of the IS enterprise in Libya, examining whether the conditions and circumstances in the country are conducive for an IS unsurgency. He identifies 8 structural conditions that underpinned the relevant enablers in Syria and assesses their relevance in Libya. Comparison of the two cases shows that except for sectarianism all the structural conditions are relevantly present in Libya which, according to J. S. Mill's method of a difference of J. S. Mill's method of a difference, should explain the stalling campaign of IS in Libya. The author proceeds to confirm this hypothesis by assessing the actual campaign of the Islamic State in Libya. He contends the Islamic State tried to follow the successful...

Kent, Joshua ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The master's thesis Insurgent Governance Systems: The Effectiveness of the Talban and the Islamic State is a qualitative comparative analysis of Islamic Jihadist rebel governance systems in the cases of the Islamic State and the Taliban. Using Mampilly's framework for effective rebel governance systems, I analyze the various factors, stemming from 'below', 'within', and 'above' that negatively and positively affect an insurgent government, its leadership, and the civilians that dynamically interact with the rebels. This thesis' aim is three part. First, it aims to show that variations between conventional rebel governments and Islamic Jihadist governance systems do exist. Second, that variation also exists between different Islamic Jihadist rebel governments, and that the challenges and opportunities presented by civilians and international actors are dealt with differently. Third, that the effectiveness of these rebel organizations is dependent on the factors presented by Mampilly, yet is not static as effectiveness of a rebel governance system changes throughout a conflict. This thesis found that significant variation, as well as some similarities, exists between conventional and Islamic Jihadist organizations; through analyzing the two cases presented, we can see variation does exist between the...
