Dynamics of the Arab States' Positions in the Arab-Israeli Conflict and the Perspectives for Peace
Beliaeva, Evguenia ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Hindlsová, Lucie (referee)
The Middle East represents a region constantly engaged in multi-dimensional, complex conflicts involving the issues such as ideology, religion, ethnicity, territory, history, and others. One of these conflicts is that between the Jewish and Arab people which took the violent form after the official establishment of Israel in 1948. This dissertation looks at the Arab perspective of the conflict, particularly, at the dynamics of the frontline states' (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt) positions in the Arab-Israeli rivalry, and the factors which influenced it. The conceptual approach involves historical overview and periodization of the conflict. These approaches allowed seeing the circumstances under which certain stances had been taken in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict; these circumstances stand as the factors of change in dynamics. The analysis of the dynamics is based on the key assumptions of the realist theory of international relations such as centrality of the sovereign states and their self- interests, security dimension, and the relations of states determined by the relative levels of power, both economic and military. In addition, the concept of "balance of power" of game theory is used to aid the understanding of the central question. The study showed two major trends. First, is the...

Nagorno-Karabakh: Ethnopolitics and Geopolitics of Conflict
Ditrych, Ondřej ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the relationship between ethnopolitics (defined by a raised demand of political autonomy for a community delimited along ethnical lines) and geopolitics (spatial definition and pursuing of national interests, determined by power) in what is one of most serious conflicts in post-Soviet space - Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Structure of the thesis is dialectical. Firstly, it defines terms such as conflict, conflict resolution or security, which will be used in the rest of the paper. Then, the conflict is placed into a spatial context, be it in its physical/material or spiritual/historical dimension. An effort is made to contextually embed Nagorno- Karabakh into the region of South Caucasus - whose politics has for centuries been shaped by conflicting interests of great powers - and to present a detailed projection of the disputed territory; not merely that of Nagorno-Karabakh itself, but also that of adjacent raions, whose total area is almost double in comparison. The main argument of this section is that the value of Nagorno-Karabakh rests not in the material realm - a dispute over "scarce resources" - but rather in the spiritual one, for is is perceived by the parties to the conflict as a "territorialization of national memory", or a constitutive element...

The Legacy of the Japanese Pacific Empire within the Cold War
Janáková, Barbora ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
From the early twentieth century, Japan has been central to any conception of the Asia-Pacific as a region. In the build-up to and during the Pacific War this found expression primarily in the abortive attempt to impose an economic empire by force. After 1945 Japan emerged as the most dynamic economic centre of the region within a strategic and economic order established by the United States. The idea of a 'Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere', an attempt to legitimize the Japanese military and political drive for supreme regional power over all the Asia-Pacific in the 1930s and the early 1940s, was launched in early 1941, and signalled Japan's further expansion to the south after the capture of Indochina. Apart from the military and geopolitical aspects of Japanese territorial expansion southwards, the creation of a regional sphere under Japanese supremacy was intimately linked to Japan's growing need for raw materials following the rapid industrialization in the Meiji and Taishō eras. The 'Co-Prosperity Sphere' may be said to have been the first modern attempt to create regional political and economic integration in the Asia-Pacific. It is noteworthy that the geographical extension of the 'Co-Prosperity Sphere' in the early 1940s comprised almost exactly the same region as the Japanese economy came to...

Global Economic Outlook - February 2017
Česká národní banka
The February issue of Global Economic Outlook presents the regular monthly overview of recent and expected developments in selected territories, focusing on key economic variables: inflation, GDP growth, leading indicators, interest rates, exchange rates and commodity prices. In this issue, we tend to explore analytically the effect of (un)conventional monetary policy measures on shadow interest rates in the euro area and the USA. Based on our estimates, we show in this article that the effect of monetary policy measures on shadow rates differs depending on whether they were aimed at stabilising financial markets or further easing monetary conditions. We also indicate how the effects of measures taken by central banks can change depending on the current level of financial stress.

Yellow rust protection on the wheat
Hanzalová, Alena ; Bartoš, Pavel
Heavy incidence of yellow rust in the years 2014 and 2015 has proved high deleterious effects of this rust. For this reason this publication deals with yellow rust on wheat. Rusts on wheat cause losses every year. In the years of an epidemic yield can be decreased by more than a half. Epidemics of stem rust and yellow rust occur in irregular intervals. Leaf rust causes damage every year particularly in central and southern part of Moravia. Chemical control limits yield losses, however in the case of heavy rust incidence this control particularly on susceptible cultivars is not sufficient. Repeated chemical treatments increase the costs and are limited by phytosanitary regulations. Economic and ecologic rust control consists in resistance breeding and growing resistant cultivars. Knowledge of virulence in the rust poppulation and suitable sources of resistance are prerequisites for successful resistance breeding. This publication presents a summary of data from literature on the yellow rust on wheat. Data on resistance of the grown cultivars and possibilities of the chemical control are included.
