Špinarová, Kateřina ; Pítrová, Lenka (referee) ; Pomahač, Richard (advisor)
Resumé The Regulation of Asylum in the European Union and its Influence on the Regulation of Asylum in the Legal Sysem of the Czech Republic I decided to write this dissertation because I am interested in the issue of asylum. I acquired practical experience in this field during a year of practice in the Organization for Aid to Refugees and during an internship of several months in the Prague branch of UNICEF. The goal I set for my dissertation is to map and summarize asylum policy in the European Union and in which manner the asylum policy of the EU has influenced the asylum policy of the Czech Republic and the extent of this influence. From its beginnings to today, the Czech Republic has gone a long way in the field of asylum. Today, asylum law in the Czech Republic is regulated in a rather complex manner; however, one might pose the question of how effectively this has been done, whether this law is examined from the point of view of state organs or from the point of view of the applicants for asylum themselves. Asylum law is a branch of law which evolves and changes very quickly and very often, as it must reflect changes in international imigration, and not only political imigration - an essential criterion for granting asylum, but also economic imigration. The latter is not a reason for granting asylum;...

Plato's purple shadow, or, the two Headed swimmer in the underground river
Boháček, Kryštof ; Špinka, Štěpán (advisor) ; Fischerová, Sylva (referee) ; Kurzová, Helena (referee)
My dissertation is dedicated to Gorgias :from Leontini and his presence in Plato's dialogues; his influence on the development of Plato's thinking and significance for [not only] platonic philosophy. This piece consists of o ne preparatory part and the two main parts. The preparatory part firstly evaluates the ordinary input of Plato's views in Gorgias' rhetoric and subsequently gives a detailed analysis of Plato's opinion of the sophistes. It is con:fronted with the similar expression: sophistes; and Plato's partial acceptance of them. Then, of course, the dissertation identifies the typical terminology used and which corresponds very well to the teachings of such historical sophists as Protagoras. Practically, the term does not correspond with the teachings of the historical Gorgias, which does correspond to Gorgias' wish not to be counted amongst the sophists. The preparatory work concludes that there are marked differences in the image of Gorgias and the sophists from Plato's view. The fb'St part briefly recapitulates the results of my Master thesis, i.e., a reconstruction of Gorgias' philosophy ofnot-being. On the basis ofthis I shall now place a detailed interpretation of Gorgias' Helen, present a proposal for the complex reconstruction of the tragic teachings of logos, i.e. Gorgianic rhetorical...

The individual and the social in the novel La casa grande
Obručová, Lucie ; Fousek, Michal (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (advisor)
The focal point of this dissertation is the novel The Big House (La Casa Grande) by Álvaro Cepeda Samudio (1926 - 1972) a Colombian journalist, novelist, short storywriter, and filmmaker. Owing to the author' s personal literary development the dissertation pays shortly attention to his journalistic activities and further to his short story collection We Were Al! Waiting (Todos estábamos a la espera). In his novel he def1ects the town' s theme which is dominant one in his short stories and his novel emerges from his birthplace and its history. The subject is the historical event of the Ciénaga Massacre of striking journeymen from banana plantations. This is the backdrop to perform an individual drama, the one of a Colombian family whose inner problems ref1ect the whole society and acquire universal dimension. Above all, the analysis of the novel concentrates on the performance stage, individual characters who can be understood as archetypes, and on the time draft which necessitates repeating faults and mistakes. The fragmentary compositon of the novel correlates with the plurality of narrative perspectives and with the polyphonic narrative technique. The novel is to be understood knowing the background to the Colombian political life in the first half of the last century definied as bi-party system in its...

Encounters with Otherness in E. M. Forster's A Room With a View and D. H. Lawrence's The Lost Girl
Skopečková, Eva ; Grmelová, Anna (advisor) ; Ženíšek, Jakub (referee)
In my dissertation, I examine encounters with otherness in E. M. Förster's A Room With a View and D. H. Lawrence's The Lost Girl. Primarily, I focus on the development of the main protagonists, which is influenced by such a sudden encounter. I also discuss the particular views of the two writers concerning this issue. In both books, Forster and Lawrence dramatize their belief in the great potential of southern emotionality and suggest a sort of solution to the dehumanized and stiff life of the English middle classes, which the writers severely criticised. In both novels, Forster as well as Lawrence choose Italy as the representation of the great potential of the Southern nations and they place it against the criticised stiffness and sterility of the English middle classes. The portrayal of this southern element, however, differs in several aspects in the respective books. What is more, the conception of otherness appears in various forms in both works, reflecting their author's approaches. The depiction of the development of Forster's and Lawrence's heroines actually demonstrates their author's beliefs in a possible way for a young middle class woman oppressed by social conventions and values towards her inmost feelings and passions on the grounds of an encounter with otherness. Moreover, there is another...
