On diglossia as a subject of political and journalistic discourse in the German-speaking cantons of Switzerland
Röschlová, Lucie ; Vachková, Marie (referee) ; Dovalil, Vít (advisor)
Every reader will understand my passion for language situation in German speaking cantons of Switzerland after reading the preface of this work (the one about an occurence at one little Swiss station). That uncertainty which you have after talking to a German speaking Swiss. Switzerland is supposed to be one of the German-speaking countries so why is it such a problem to make yourself understood if you speak German? The topic of diglossia as the subject of political and publicistic discourse in Swiss German-speaking cantons offers many other themes which might be assigned to this work. Everything is realated to everything else and this work proves this saying. My research is divided into six areas that also chronologically follow my work. At the beginning the methodology of my work is discourse and its analysis. Therefore the first chapter is devoted to metadiscourse and a study of a discourse conception in philosophy followed by its conception in linguistic. I cannot forget to mention there M. Foucault, J. Habermas or S. Jäger as their works inspire me to find my way to understand the discourse, yet more helped me the studies for which discours as a methodology really works e.g. Oliver Stenschke's study (2005). Then my work comes to an analysis of discourse, which explore to what degree can something what...

The Effects of Cold War Speech in the Post-Cold War World: Identification of the Enemy in the War on Terror
Hays II, George Waight Secrest ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Beneš, Vít (referee)
This work is a discursive analysis exploring the effects of US presidential Cold War speech on the identification of the "Enemy." It examines the usage of metaphors in key speeches from Truman, Eisenhower, Reagan, and G.H.W. Bush in order to determine the composition and evolution of the identity of the Cold War "Enemy." This identity is then compared and contrasted to that created by the usage of metaphors concerning the War on Terror by G.W. Bush. The theory of discursive analysis used in this work stems from beginnings in philosophy several decades old. Over time, the theory of discursive analysis was honed towards many different schools and areas of study. The specific branch which this work springs from holds that language shapes political and physical reality. Coming out of this theory, this work aims to explore whether or not exposure to Cold War rhetoric had an impact over time between different administrations as well as between different conflicts. The method of analysis is an adaptation of previous methods of metaphorical analysis. Eight general conceptual metaphors are chosen as a guiding structure throughout all of the speeches. Corresponding metaphorical expressions are then gathered according to the conceptual metaphor being analyzed. The frequency of metaphorical expressions, and the...

Incompatibilities: the possibility of engagement in contemporary literary theory
Černovský, Pavel ; Procházka, Martin (referee) ; Armand, Louis (advisor)
To relate question of literature, or art in general, to any notion of engagement represents a number of problems. Probably the first is the problem, manifested in the development of the avant-garde, that engagement no matter how openly defined would nevertheless end in a subordination of art to politics, accompanied by politics usurping the right to define what is art. As Theda Shapiro in her account of the relation between politics and avant-garde art points out, at the beginning: "Many artists tacitly and somewhat naively assumed that, since art has been revolutionary before the Revolution, avant-garde artists would intuitively understand what was now needed and respond to the new economic and social situation."l However, this did not prove to be the case. To a certain surprise, the initial belief that "The fine phrase 'free, unpolitical art' is not meant for you"2 has not lead to a natural and spontaneous co-operation of artists and politicians. Instead, the claim of art being necessarily part of politics in a very wide sense was soon seen to be seized by the increasingly bureaucratic apparatus pursuing "ideological needs of the moment,"3 only to be in the end transformed into a doctrine by the "1932 proclamation of 'socialist realism' as the only officially accepted art form."4 To relate literature to...

Registered partnership and its potential property consequences
Kutálek, Karel ; Frintová, Dita (referee) ; Hendrychová, Michaela (advisor)
59 Summary Registered Partnership and Its Potential Property Consequences I have chosen this particular topic for my thesis because according to my opinion the institute of registered partnership is still quite new and unknown to many people in the Czech Republic and the Czech legal theory concerning this topic is not much rich so far. The aim of my thesis is to look at the issue of registered partnership more deeply, not only from the position of the questions of from where, how and why registered partnership actually came to the Czech Republic. This analysis focuses on the legal consequences of registration for partners and among themselves, especially in comparison with the two main variants of cohabitation - marriage and unmarried cohabitation. To this end, the work is divided into three main chapters, which are further subdivided into subchapters and these are eventually further subdivided into smaller parts. The thesis begins with the Introduction where the intended aims and goals of this work are described. Followed by the First Chapter which presents the topic of the work by its basic question "What the homosexuality actually is". This chapter discusses the concept of homosexuality and its development, looks closer at the term "coming out" and the number of homosexuals in the society and in the end...
