The Current Position of Scotland within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Manišová, Petra ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Říchová, Blanka (referee)
Bachelor thesis "The Current Position of Scotland within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" deals with a relationship of Scotland within the Great Britain. The main feature of Scottish politics is nationalism, which characterizes the Scots the most. Although Scotland exists as a part of Great Britain since 1707 within the parliamentary union, the separatist tendencies are intensified in past few decades. I am going to show the historical evolution of Scotland from the establishment of the Crown Union to the current Scottish policy in my thesis. The biggest political event in past four centuries was the creation of Scottish Parliament, seated in Holyrood, Edinburgh. Very important was a creation of Scottish National Party in 1934. It developed from an unpopular political party into one of the most popular parties in Scotland. I will focus on the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence which takes place on September 18 2014. I will also focus on both positive and negative consequences the positive result of referendum may bring.
Defence Policy of Independent Scotland: Role of International Norms and Legitimity in the Process of Proposal Formation
Kafka, Hugo ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
My bachelor's thesis "Defence Policy of Independent Scotland: Role of International Norms and Legitimity in the Process of Proposal Formation" deals with the genesis of proposals for defence policy of an independent Scotland, which served the Scots as a basis for their vote in the referendum "Should Scotland be an independent country?" I will try to explain the effect of the norms which exist in three communities (NATO, United Kingdom and the Nordic countries) on the defence policy of an emerging state I will be using theories of institutionalism and social constructivism. Then I'd like to show how these models were used rhetorically in the pre- referendum political discourse. While advocates of independence are aiming at distinguishing Scotland from the United Kingdom, Scotland identifies itself with the Nordic countries and their orientation on a fair society and welfare state and responsible environmental and foreign policy to some extent (Denmark and Norway in particular) and also in the area of defence policy are their positions regarded as a possible way for an independent Scotland to take. They are used as a possible alternative to British positions and also as means of legitimizing seemingly controversial proposals in the debate preceding the referendum. The Higher exam paper was translated and Czech secondary students sat the test Furthermore, teacher trainees and Chemistry teachers were asked to evaluate the test. Results show that Czech students are taught different things and are accustomed to different ways of being tested, ones that are more focused on knowledge and less on critical thinking. Chemistry education in Scotland is more focused on school and real life connections and newest scientific discoveries. Therefore, Chemistry support notes for the senior phase were analyzed...
Influence of the additional member system upon party systems of Scotland and Wales
Kotíková, Petra ; Brunclík, Miloš (advisor) ; Říchová, Blanka (referee)
The thesis focuses on influence of the AMS (Additional Member System) upon party systems of Scotland and Wales. This system is used for elections to Scottish parliament and Welsh national assembly. It was applied for the first election that was held in 1999 and it is still in use. This means AMS is used in both regions for the same time period, which allows us to compare the influence which the system has in different environment. The thesis analyzes results of all elections that were held in Scotland and Wales and defines their influence on particular parties and party systems it operates in. On the basis of these findings the general influence of AMS is formulated. Theoretical concepts by Maurice Duverger and Giovanni Sartori are used as a background for study of election systems and party systems. The position voter support and its changes are analyzed through valence theory, which uses opinion polls to explain election results. At the first sight the AMS seems to be the same one as another election system - MMP (Mixed Member Proportional). These systems are often confused or perceived as the same ones. So except the election results analysis this thesis explains also the difference between these systems and classifies them into right categories. It shows up that each of the systems belongs to...
The concept of referendums in democracy: a comparison of the Scottish and Catalan models
Dudycha, Petr ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Brunclík, Miloš (referee)
The diploma thesis called 'the concept of referendums in democracy: a comparison of the Scottish and Catalan models', deals with the question of referendum in democracy which is an instrument for countries to become independent. The referendum is correctly known as a constitutional referendum. This thesis also deals with the application of a constitutional referendum in the cases of Scotland and Catalonia. The main purpose of this research is to analyse the conduct of the Scottish and Catalan referendums for independence, both of which were held in the autumn of 2014. The paper looks to identify the similarities and differences between these two examples. Both cases are based on seven variables in the research of referendums: 1) constitutional framework for holding a referendum of independence, 2) identification of the basic political process leading to a referendum, 3) organizational-administrative regulation of a referendum, 4) issues during the referendum campaign, 5) opinion polls for the referendum, 6) results of the referendum and 7) predicted consequences of the referendum. The final purpose of this thesis is to assess how these two models reflect on the current constitutional practice in a democratic society.

Müllerová, Lucie ; Teodoridis, Vasilis (referee) ; Pavlasová, Lenka (referee)
This thesis deals with the conception of evolutionary topic in schools and textbooks. It introduces education systems and curricular documents of England, Scotland and the Czech Republic. The questionnaire research based on those findings was done in the Czech Republic. It is focused on secondary school and high school pupil's knowledge and their personal opinions about this topic. 586 pupils took part in this research. It was found that in the context of evolutionary processes the pupils have problems to use commonly known biological, or evolutionary terms (e.g. adaptation, evolution of the organisms). On the other hand some pupils can easily define some more complicated evolutionary topics such as Neo-Darwinism. Pupils have quite various personal opinions on the issue of the evolution. Some of them are not interested in this area; the others have many questions about the topic of evolution. Some questions are relevant,...

Martinovská, Veronika ; Lebeda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Říchová, Blanka (referee)
The thesis presents the process of evolution of nationalism in Scotland. The question is asked whether a Scottish nation exists and what features characterise it and how far its history goes back. This thesis considers the possibility of establishment of Scotland as an independent state and examines the prospective form of that subject from the political and economical points fo view. The first part examines the evolution of Scottish nationalism mainly focusing on the formation and progression of the Scottish National Party, especially during 1960s and 1970s as the period of significant growth of its voters, on the process of devolution and institution of the Scottish Parliament after the SNP's victory in the elections in 2007 and 2011. Comparison of the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru in 1966-1979
Razím, Tomáš ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
The Bachelor thesis "Comparison of the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru in 1966- 1979" is concerned with the regionalist parties of Scotland and Wales which achieved a substantial rise in popular support in the late 1960s and in the 1970s. Their electoral success led the Labour government to pass the acts which were supposed to introduce devolution to both regions but failed to achieve a sufficient support in the referenda. The thesis examines which of the two parties was more successful in enforcing its core policy and why. The first chapter classifies SNP and Plaid Cymru, determines their priorities and describes their origin and development. The second chapter analyses the electoral performance of SNP and Plaid Cymru, their ideological transformation, campaigns, electoral base and their attitude to the devolution bills and to the subsequent referenda. The last chapter determines that the SNP was the more successful party because it achieved better results in elections and the proposed Scottish Assembly was about to possess greater powers than the Welsh Assembly. This had two main reasons. First, the language division of Wales prevented Plaid Cymru from securing support throughout the whole region and made it rely on the welsh-speaking minority of the north-west. Second, Plaid Cymru's...
