Jović, Damjan ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
Bibliographic record JOVIC, Damjan. European Security at the Beginning o f the Tw'enty First Century: At the Crossroads of the US and Russian Foreign Policies. Prague: Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of International Studies, 2009. 69 p. Supervisor Doc. PhDr. Jiri Vykoukal, CS. Annotation The aim of this paper is to provide a clear view of the current conflict of the United States' and Russia's geopolitical and geostrategic interests in Europe. Furthermore, the author will try - by addressing the most relevant problems - to identify alternative scenarios that may result from this conflict in the near future. At the same time the author is advocating the point that tensions in relations between the US and Russia will not improve any time soon because of fundamentally confronted interests as well as because of the influence of realist logic that dominates the political spectrum on both sides. The author argues that the basis of the new security arrangement in Europe can emerge from the tightening of Russia-Germany relations (especially in the sphere of energy security) and more independent EU policies in the sphere of military affairs. This paper does not aim to address so called "new" and "asymmetrical" threats to national and international security (e.g. terrorism, immigration,...

Špotová, Jana ; Kochan, Jan (advisor) ; Tůmová, Jana (referee)
The aim of this work is to evaluate effectiveness of operation of the Antarctic Treaty System and to identify main problems which have appeared during half-century of its existence. In the introductory part of this work I describe the history of formation of the Antarctic Treaty System with focus on development of territorial claims in relation to Antarctica. In another part, the attention is payed to key provisions of the Antarctic Treaty, which is the essential document of the whole system. I also describe two chosen bodies of the system and with the use of their example the principles of functioning of the whole system are illustrated. The last part deals with those controversial points of the system, which are relevant in the present day and which might be important in the future as well.

"When the mind is tranquil and the qi 氣 well managed..." The inner cultivation in the 內業 Neiye and the 想爾注 Xiang'er zhu in the context of the debate on early Taoism
Tichá, Markéta ; Lomová, Olga (referee) ; Chlup, Radek (advisor)
This thesis deals with the topic of early taoism. First it summarises current scholarly discourse about early forms of taoism. Most scholars in the field have already abandoned the dichotomy of earlier "philosophical taoism" (daojia) and later "religious taoism" (daojiao) and have begun to offer new models for understanding the continuities among the ideas and practices presented in the taoist texts of different periods. So far they have dealt with preHan and early Han taoist texts and their relations. The result of this research is suggestion that the continuity within the frame of taoist tradition is based on specific practice of inner cultivation and related cosmology. Further they suppose this practice is also common to later forms of taoism (later Han and postHan periods). Nevertheless it seems there are no detailed analyses of relevant texts with this concern so far. Therefore I compare the Neiye chapter from the Guanzi collection (4th/3rd century B. C.) and the Xiang'er commentary to the Laozi (2nd/ 3rd century C. E.) with the aim to find out whether we can prove (of refute) this assumption for the period of the first taoist organisations known by history. I came to the conclusion that in spite of the fact that there is a several centuries long gap between the recording of these texts and that their...

Changes in the steppe vegetation of the solitary conic hill Oblík in the České Středohoří Protected Landscape Area
Zmeškalová, Jana ; Suchara, Ivan (advisor) ; Chýlová, Tereza (referee)
Změny stepní vegetace v NPR Oblík 8 2. Abstract Changes in the steppe vegetation of the solitary conic hill Oblík in the České Středohoří Protected Landscape Area This diploma thesis is based on a comparison of vegetation and chemical attributes of the soil between the years 1973 and 2006/7 in the model area of the Oblík hill. The primary source of old botanical and pedological data is a series of diploma theses by students from the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Charles University from the seventies of the 20th Century (Březinová 1973, Klimešová 1973, Suchara 1974). The study is limited by old methodology. Vegetation data were compared on the different levels - phytosociological relevés, non-destructive estimation of shrub biomass, photogrammetry of shrub communities and syntaxonomical classification. Environmental changes were studied by repeating chemical analyses (contents of N, C, K, Ca, C/N, pH) and indirectly using Ellenberg's indication values. Today, there is higher species diversity and a high turnover of species in the area. The number of pastures and mesophilous broad-leaved grassland species has decreased. The number of nitrophilous and margin species, weeds and shrubs has increased. The area of the syntaxonomical units Festuco valesiacae-Stipetum capillatae, Koelerio...

Fair Use of Trademarks: Anheuser-Busch versus Budějovický Budvar
Watkins, Kirby ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Sojka, Milan (referee)
This paper examines the trademark dispute between the breweries Anheuser- Busch of the United States and Budějovicky Budvar of the Czech Republic. Their dispute has lasted over a century and it has had numerous near-resolutions. This paper begins with the early histories of each company and continues to the present day (May 2007). It traces the near agreement just after the Velvet Revolution and the sudden change in character of the negotiations due to the privatization process in the Czech Republic. The process of the negotiations between Budějovicky Budvar, the Czechoslovak/Czech government and Anheuser-Busch is examined. Then the relevant trademark and applicable geographic indication laws are examined as is the litigation in the 1990s that followed the failed negotiation. Finally, the current privatization proposal from the Czech government is investigated as well as the potential roles for both Budějovicky Budvar and Anheuser-Busch.

The Geopolitics of Gas Transportation of Contemporary Russia (Case Studies of Nord Stream and South Stream Pipeline Projects)
Sorokina, Veronika ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Žídková, Markéta (referee)
Energy issues are of growing interest in the modern world. Ever since the Industrial Revolution and until the present century, energy and the need to secure its supply have been fundamental to any position of power in the world. At the same time, despite the rising role of energy in influencing state's national security, regime development, domestic and international politics, it is a fact that the professional journals in political science and international relations have not paid the sufficient attention to publishing research on these topics; themes, which have been examined in this respect, have been mostly devoted to research to the impact of oil. In contrast, this thesis focuses on the analysis of the relationship between international politics and natural gas originated from the Russian Federation as the country, which is widely recognized to be as one of the most influential actors on the energy source markets. This research project is based on a wide review of relevant literature supplemented by the data analyzing method, method of comparative analysis and the case study method. The latter is founded upon the examination of the new projects promoted by Russia, namely: the Nord Stream and South Stream pipeline projects. The findings underline that realist and neorealist categories have shaped...
