Pathogenic trichomonads in domestic animals
Vobořilová, Pavlína ; Tachezy, Jan (advisor) ; Čepička, Ivan (referee)
Pathogenic trichomonads of domestic animals are anaerobic protozoa found in the gastrointestinal and reproductive tract. They are responsible for serious diseases, which result in economic losses in agriculture. Cochlosoma anatis parasitizes in the intestine of birds, where it causes so-called runting syndrome and enteritis. Trichomonas gallinae is found in the gastrointestinal tract of pigeons and represents a dangerous infection of wild migratory birds and endangered birds of prey. Histomonas meleagridis is the causative agent of the best known, fatal and very redoubtable disease of turkeys and hens, so-called "blackhead disease". Tritrichomonas foetus is the causative agent of the most important sexually transmitted infection, tritrichomonosis in cattle, which causes significant economic losses in global beef production. T. foetus was recently identified as the causal agent of diarrheal disease in cats. Also Tritrichomonas mobilensis was recently described as a new species which probably disrupts the intestinal mucosa of squirrel monkeys. This work includes the general characteristics of these species and a detailed summary of the current knowledge on the diseases they are causing. The description covers the issue of sources and disease transmission, host specificity of the parasite and...
Cat parasites
Vošická, Kristýna ; Jankovská, Ivana (advisor) ; Kyriánová, Iveta Angela (referee)
The content of this bachelor thesis describes a different variety of cat parasites. This study discovers that the most infected group of the outdoor cats due to the fact that these animals are not provided with the same care as the household pets. Those cats are usually not vaccinated, not rid of worms, no one takes care of their fur and so they tend to become a host for the parasites. There are several kinds of parasites which attack cats. Among those belong the skin parasites like a cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) or follicle (Demodex). The most common endoparasite that lives in the internal organs or tissues of cats is coccidia (Toxoplasma gondii). The secondary host of this parasite can be any warm-blooded vertebrates including a human host. The common host is a mouse which usually loses its shyness after infestation. This enables the parasite to move to the primary host which is a cat. Other parasites of cats are coccidia (Cystoisospora felis), megrims (Trematoda), nematodes (Nematoda) and dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum). The interesting thing is that a cat flea can be a carrier of a dog tapeworm. The most common way of identification of a parasite is a coprological examination (examining the feces). This examination is utilized due to its fast results, however they are not 100 percent correct all the time. There have to be a multiple sample taken during a several days period, however still the parasite doesn´t have to be detected. The more accurate identification is the PCR method which is not only exact, but a costly way. In general, the best prevention begins with good sanitation procedures. This includes daily removal of feces from inside and outside of household as well. The important action is to get rid of worms on regular basis and to use a different method, since the parasite can become immune to a specific method. Other applicable precaution is to ensure the vaccination of a kitten which is repeated every year of cat´s life.
Felinotherapy from medical staff´s point of view
Fejtová, Petra ; Zita, Lukáš (advisor) ; Masopustová, Renata (referee)
The thesis is focused on animal-assisted therapy and cats interacting with humans as the main part of the therapy. Felinotherapy as officially called is less known than other more popular animal-assisted therapies such as canistherapy and hippotherapy but already considered for a valuable part of animal-assisted therapy. The beginning of thesis is focused on animal- assisted therapy in general, its methods and animals which can be used for therapeutic purposes. The next part of thesis is about felinotherapy, its history, forms and methods and theoretical possibilities of its use as well as about a selection and training of suitable cats. The different breeds of cats are described for use in felinotherapy. Thesis goal is to show advantages of a cat as a suitable animal therapist and compare it with other animals. We could apply felinotherapy to clients of all ages and with different types of distabilities and diseases. The most commonly used form of felinotherapy is visiting program. The last part describes different ways to use felinotherapy in various target groups of clients and patients. For newcomers to the client´s home for the elderly cat helps relieve the stress of moving, to replace the lack of social ties, promote cognitive fiction and may be a subject of conversation with other clients or participiants of felinotherapy. In children, the cat may even become involved in teaching through play. In the end there are all indications, contraindications and risks associated with this therapy being deemed and disscused. Risk of disease transmission from cat to clients is minimized if the cat used for felinotherapy is regularly vaccinated, wormed and is under regular veterinary supervision.
Using of environmental enrichment for cats bred like pets
Benešová, Lucie ; Gardiánová, Ivana (advisor) ; Jan, Jan (referee)
Environmental enrichment includes various forms of mental and physical stimulation. It is one of the ways how to improve the life of the animals in a breeding facility, a zoo or home. The appropriate form of enrichment can help reduce or even eliminate problem behavior, and in some cases even behavioral problems. Enrichment can be divided into 5 types - social, occupational, physical, sensory and nutritional enrichment. For cats and felids is suitable nutritional (feeding) enrichment and sensory enrichment. The nutritional (feeding) enrichment and sensory enrichment is the most suitable for cats and felids. The other three types of enrichment can also be enriching. The aim of the thesis was to describe the possibilities of environmental enrichment for cats bred in captivity, primarily focusing on domestic cats. The thesis also includes a chapter about enrichment for zoo animals (both large and small felids) and for domestic cats which live in shelters. In addition to the theoretical part, questionnaire for interviewees (cat breeders) which contained several questions concerning breeding cats, knowledge of the term enrichment and the use of environmental enrichment by cat breeders was also prepared. During which some interesting results were found. Most interviewees keep cats in the household as a companion (85 %), only 15 % of respondents leads kennel. Most respondents keep cats without certificate of origin (pedigree) and only less than 30 % have a registered cat with the certificate. Most of the breeders keep the cats at least 3 years (75 %) and only 25 % keep the cats less than three years. Over 66 % of the breeders own more than one cat. More than 58% of cats are kept indoors only and a additional 10% of cats are kept indoors with access to enclosed outdoor aviary, only less than 19% of cats have unlimited access outside. More 66% of responders have another pet (e.g. dog, rodents, reptiles, fish, parrot). Regarding the knowledge of the term enrichment as such most of the interviewees did not know the meaning of the term enrichment (only 29 % knew the meaning). However, it was found based on answers of additional questions that a significant number of interviewees use the enrichment (over 43%). Over 21% of breeders are using social enrichment, 21% physical enrichment, almost 6% nutritional enrichment, more than 1% of breeders use occupational enrichment and only 0.8% use sensory enrichment.
Magnetoreception of mammals focused on domestic beasts of prey
Klemsová, Nikola ; Hart, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Svoboda, Jan (referee)
This work concerns to magneto-reception of mammals focused on domestic beasts of prey. A measurement was directed to three dogs and three cats with different races and places. At first they were observed in Klášterec nad Ohřís pound. This measurement seemed to be verifiable later, thats why the positional behaving (magnetic alignment) were observed in their inherent living conditions, especially in the garden or hutch. Data was taken by photo-catch machine localized over their bowls, where there were observed their single orientation of body and head direction to water bowls. The account was also taken of daily temperature, sun position to that individual in direction of bowl to kennel, of measuring location and state of health. During the measuring term 380 pictures has been evaluated. From these findings statistical preferred direction orientation during the drinking from water bowl were find out and also the preference of north-south line. The results of pictures also represents, that magnetic orientation does not depend on the animal species, as it was expected, bud on every individual.
Comparative analysis canistherapy and felinotherapy in therapeutic practice
Goldšmídová, Klára ; Zita, Lukáš (advisor) ; Dokoupilová, Adéla (referee)
This bachelors work deals with the differences in domestication for two types of animals, the cat and the dog. It deals with the religious perception of the dog and cat and highlights a fundamental difference between them. It describes the relationship between dog and man, as well as describing the beginnings of cat domestication. The bachelor work also explains the basic terminology of animal-assisted therapy, describes the types of animalassisted therapy by type of animal used and briefly mentions the positive and negative aspects of using animals. It also states the methods used in animal-assisted therapy and the physiology of the effects of animal-assisted therapy in treatment processes for people. Main point of this work is a comparison of the ethology of dogs and cats, the outlining of their main character traits that are used in the therapy itself and describes two types of animal assisted therapy therapy dogs and therapy cats. It deals with the issue of choosing suitable breeds of dogs and cats, as well as describing the methods and forms of such types of animal assisted therapy. Subsequent chapters discuss in more detail the use of a dog in therapeutic and medical social work with regard to the type of illness a person suffers from, and the use of therapy dogs in various facilities. The following chapters of this dissertation describe the therapeutic use of cats, as well as the form and use of therapy cats in therapeutic practice. A cat is not so demanding from the viewpoint of active movement outside and is suitable in particular where patients are frightened of dogs. It can also be used, in contrast to dogs, in residential programmes, because it is not tied to one person so much. Another type of cat therapy that has gradually started to take hold in large cities is cat cafes, which provide people with this type of cat therapy and is a good choice for people who, for various reasons, cannot do this form of treatment themselves. The final chapters are devoted to the demands of caring for a dog or cat, the hygiene conditions for owning the animals.
