The stay and activities of Mann brothers in Prague between 1933-1938
Cvachová, Veronika ; Mravcová, Marie (referee) ; Holý, Jiří (advisor)
This thesis deals with the stay and activities of Thomas and Heinrich Mann in the Czechoslovakia between 1933 and 1938. It is divided into three main parts. After evaluating a general situation of the German refugees in the Czechoslovakia, it focuses on the older of both Mann brothers, Heinrich. Although his wife and daughter permanently stayed in Prague, Heinrich himself visited Prague only once during the 1930s. On the other hand he was the first member ofthe Mann family to gain the Czechoslovak citizenship and he actively supported the exile anti-Nazis endeavours in his essayistic works that were frequently published in the Prague-basedjournals and papers. The third part of this thesis deals with Thomas Mann. It attempts to show that Thomas appeared to be much more connected with the German environment and thus he essentially suffered from an uneasy reconciliation with the enforced exile. Consequentially he managed to keep a certain distance to the actual political events at least until 1936. Afterescaping the Nazis Germany he visited the Czechoslovakia three times while taking lectures all around the Europe. He undertook the last visit already as a Czechoslovak citizen. His activities in the Czechoslovakia wcre mainly connected with the Foundation of Thomas rv1ann, which aimed at supporting Gennan exile...

Media Presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI.
Pániková, Klára ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI. in the Czech press. We arise from the assumtion that the way the Czech press writes about the present Pope is set by a certain discourse. That is why we use the method of dicourse analysis designed by Michel Foucault. Having carefully analysed altogether 690 articles from selected newspapers and magazines published between 02/04/2005 and 31/12/2007 we reached a number of fragmental results which in the end turned to be the parts of the searched for discourse. In so doing some hidden motives, which seem to form an esential part of the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI., emerged. Along with that the absence of the journalists' ability to assess the proper meaning of some words or to lay proper stresses appeared too. As this thesis brings out, the journalists are at the same time impossible to take a step forward in this as their way of thinking about the Pope is set by the discourse (that they themselves first created). So, we came to the conclusion that the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI. is influenced by, e.g. stereotypes we Czechs have about the German nationality or artificially (by journalists) connected events in Benedict's life. We also show that the present Pope is a very good object of...

Flyers in the Thirty Years War
Válek, Filip ; Kortus, Oldřich (referee) ; Čechura, Jaroslav (advisor)
The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) is one of the major events in both the European and the Czech history. It affected the whole of Central, Western and South Eastern Europe. The 1 i h century, however, did not see only ragging wars; it also saw the birth of Baroque culture in Bohemia. An essential part of the culture was art and the fine arts especially. In the fine arts the religious and social events of the era found their c1earest reflection. Moreover, fine art, for various groups of people, was a c1ear appeal to change their political opinions, systems of values and religious beliefs. The 1 i h century provided new impetus for the development of newspapers, brochures and leaflets; most of these were published in print. The majority of events which took place in Bohemia or outside of it were thought to have a major impact on history. This was very important for the then media, as it provided them with a reservoir of events to report on. In my thesis, I ex amine one type of printed reports, namely printed single sheets, which have been well preserved in sufficient quantity. Printed single sheets were used to convey emotionally coloured content to influence the warring parties of the Thirty Year' s War according to their author' s aim. In my thesis, I look at history through single sheets, which were mainly...

The media dialogical networks before the year 1989
Provázková, Karla ; Šebesta, Karel (referee) ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor)
Focusing on intertextuality and dialogical properties, the media dialogical networks are one of the methods of media content analysis. This thesis is the first insight into the mass media communication in the communist Czechoslovakia (1948 - 1989) through the media dialogical networks. Newspaper articles (mostly published in Rudé právo) from four years: 1952, 1967, 1972 and 1989 have been chosen for the analysis. The author's supposition is that the different political situation in the years 1952 and 1972 on the one hand, and 1967 and 1989 on the other, influences the shape of the media dialogical networks formed in these years. The analysis shows that the media dialogical networks from the communist period have the same basic properties as the media dialogical networks from the post-communist period (the turns are multiplicated and distributed in time and space). There is one typical characteristic common to the networks from all four analysed years: the networks are represented by a certain amount of newspaper articles, but they are usually constructed by a markedly higher amount of dialogical events. Another relevant finding is that the media dialogical networks in the years analysed have their specific features. The networks from the year 1952 are represented by only two or three articles. Next, they...

Fabianová, Petra ; Rataj, Jan (advisor) ; Háka, Antonín (referee)
The bachelor thesis on the topic of Czech aryanisation and anti--semitism in thirties is describing, on the background of historical events, displays of hate against Jews in a period of liberal first republic and authoritarian second republic. The first chapter of this thesis follows activities of anti-semites and individual Jewish streams during the first republic. One part of this chapter is composed of author's analysis about a periodical named Vlajka, which was being published by a fascist organisation. In the second chapter, there are described fascist actions against Jews during the second republic and also anti-semitic exposures of the party Národní jednota. Besides, the chapter is also dealing with anti-semitic legislation. The last, third chapter is engaged in the problems of Czech aryanisation and tries to explain its rising illusion. The end of this chapter is also dealing with a historical period of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, to explain the process of expropriation of Jewish properties in Czech lands. So the purpose of this bachelor thesis is to define how the Anti -- Semitism was expressed during thirties in Czech lands.

The phenomenon of peregrination around castle ruins in the first half of the 19th century. Edition and contentual analyse of three Karel Kramerius's travelling diaries
Kalašová, Marcela ; Hojda, Zdeněk (referee) ; Ebelová, Ivana (advisor)
In the years 1814, 1815 and 1818 Karel Kramerius (1797-1874), a son of a famous publisher and journalist Václav Matěj Kramerius (1753-1808), realized with his friends Karel Michel and Jan Šťasný three great holiday travels over Bohemia. Aims of these travels were mainly castle ruins, speechless witnesses of the past that Karel Kramerius desired to become acquainted with so much. This rigorous work presents to reader mainly the edition of three travelling diaries, which Karel Kramerius wrote during these travels. Apart from detailed descriptions of the castle ruins, often accompanied by self-made drawing, the diaries also contain descriptions of other historic buildings (manor-houses, monasteries, natural monuments), countryside, progress of travel and events, which diversified travelling from one village to another to the travelers. During getting to know their homeland they met revivalists, relations, friends and common people. Karel Kramerius grew up in a revivalist environment created by the national revival which had already been in progress, and in an epoch of the beginning of the Czech romantic period. Both of these schools of thought projected in his diaries. While patriotic feeling developed in full extensity, romantic reception of castle ruins and country is recognised here only in indications. The...

The activity of Divoké víno magazine in the 1960's and nowdays
Šimůnková, Tereza ; Jonáková, Anna (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
This bachelor's work pursues the activity of the literary magazine Divoke vino in the 1960's and nowdays. The literary magazine Divoke vino was founded in 1964 by a group of four seventeen-year-old middle school stud ents as a basis for young non-established authors. As it was the only magazine to give the publication posibility to young people at the time , ma ny significant poets , writers, but also photographers and artists started to publish their works here (e.g. J. Zacek, P. Verner, L. Landa) . Many figures from Czech underground also associated here, lead by Milena Jesenska 's daugh ter Jana Cerna. The leading personality of the magazine has always been its chief-editor Ludvik Hess. Though Divoke vino had always awoided political themes, its activity was pulled up forcibly in connection with the change of political situation in Czechoslovakia at the beginning of 1972, and its chief-editor Ludvik Hess was arrested. This event ended up the first of Divoke vino 's two periods of existence. The other one started in 2002 when Ludvik Hess decided to renew the magazine 's activity on the internet. This time, it is not meant to publish new young authors primarily (though they do appear on its web sites regularly) but its task is to compare Divoke vino's 1960's authors' writings to their present work. This...
