The Harp in the Old Testament and in the Culture of the Ancient Near East
Rais, Věra Zdislava ; Mikulicová, Mlada (advisor) ; Hřebík, Josef (referee)
The Harp in the Old Testament and in the Culture of the Ancient Near East. This work reviews the chordophones of the harp and lyre categories and their use in the whole Ancient Near East, including Egypt. The structure of each chapter reflects the undertaken methodology: Each chapter opens with a review of available primary and secondary sources; it is divided in separate sections with archaeological and literary material. The review is followed by discussion of the social, religious and symbolic role of a harp in the given culture. Egypt, as well as Israel/Palestine region, is covered each by its own chapter; Mesopotamia, Akkad, Assyria and Babylonia are discussed together in single chapter. In Egypt, the harp play developed in immemorial tradition strongly anchored to the cult, as we can deduce from pictorial relics. Apart from the paintings depicting harp on religious occasions, it was portrayed (almost exclusively) during ceremonies of both intimate and public character. Other studied cultures offer much more wealth of information on their musical aspect. Mesopotamia developed musical notation, large number of sources give sound evidence for significant role of harp and lyre in the cult. Also in the region of today's Israel and Palestine, the chordophones became incorporated in local cult. The...

Jephthah (Jdg 11:29-40) - Explanation and Interpretation of a Particular Biblical Text
Páleník, Dan ; Prudký, Martin (advisor) ; Čapek, Filip (referee)
This thesis focuses on exegesis and interpretation of Judges 11, 29-40. Main method used in this thesis is narrative analysis, via which I investigate and interpret the chosen text as one story unit in its contemporal form. I focus on the course of action, how and with whom the characters act and what is the meaning of these in the whole narrative. I examine the structure of the text, because it's essential for the story told. I examine the context of the chosen text as well, because it's in the middle of broader narrative about Jephthah, of the book of Judges and of the Old Testament. Behavior and actions of characters, as well as facts used in the story, may have different meanings, which may not be apparent from the text itself. The aim of this thesis is to find one or several interpratiations, which will be based in the text itself and its context as much as possible. That will aslo enable me to deal with other intepratations. In the conclusion, I will shortly speak about text's influence on arts and present several themes for homiletic or pastoral use, which the story presents and contents.
El's and Baal's aspects in the concept of the Old Testament's Yahweh
Rejlková, Sandra ; Antalík, Dalibor (advisor) ; Čech, Pavel (referee)
My thesis describes the aspects of Ugarit gods El and Baal and depicts their influence on the conception of The Old Testament's Yahweh. The Biblical monotheistic tradition was indelibly influenced by the polytheistic lore of Ugarit - shards of this process can be observed even from today's perspective, despite all the efforts of ancient Biblical contributors. I suggest brief analysis of shared features of these gods, mainly Yahweh and El, who had more in common than it may seem. My ambition is not only to bring up an enumeration of their divine attributes, but also to construe the incentives, that might have led the Biblical authors to project Ugaritic imagery into their one true God.

The second part of the thesis discusses school documents and text books as related to the Bible. After Czech general educational programs analysis, the thesis offers options on various ways of implementing some of the general educational programs targets during classes, both in Language and Communication or Man and Society educational area. There follows an analysis of three individual school educational programs, each of which addresses the Bible differently, works with it in a different grade and in different areas. Ethical values in the Old and New Testament
Proroková, Marie ; Hogenová, Anna (advisor) ; Hauser, Michael (referee)
The thesis consists of two main parts. The first part focuses on the ethical values in the Old and New Testament. At the beginning basic concepts are defined, that are essential for the thesis and are related to ethics and moral evaluation. The first part centres on the important events that shaped society and that come from The Bible (Creation, The Ten Commandments, God's contracts with the nation of Israel, the life of Jesus Christ, the parables, The Sermon on the Mount and The Lord's Prayer). The thesis also compares these values with the philosophy of Socrates and then with the approach, that Jan Amos Comenius offered in his work. The second part analyzes views of Christian ethical values today : whether there is a need to know these values, why we should strive for their observance, whether they are current and whether people (Christians and atheists ) honor and follow them. On the basis of the second section I conclude, that our culture is formed under the strong influence of Christianity, these values are still held and are considered important for the functioning of human relationships and society. Although it may seem that these values are not held today, they are still an ideal within our culture and people are trying to achieve them in their lifes.
The Queen of Sheba in the Old Testament and in the Quran
Oudová Holcátová, Barbara ; Mikulicová, Mlada (advisor) ; Hřebík, Josef (referee)
The Queen of Sheba in the Old Testament and in the Quran Abstract: The story of the Queen of Sheba originally appears in the Bible in the book of Kings, and is repeated almost verbatim in the book of Chronicles. We see a much extended version of it in the Quran, and later, it was embellished by not only Jewish and Muslim writers, but also the Ethiopians and western Christians, as well as earning its place in folklore. This work attempts to analyze the accounts in the Bible and the Quran and show their similarities and differences, as well as offer such an interpretation of the story that could be interesting for a contemporary reader of the Holy Scriptures. I will also look into the problem of the Queen's historicity and endeavour to show possible ways in which questions about her could be answered. To this end, I will be using both traditional Biblical and Quranic commentaries and works of more unorthodox academics. Key words: Old Testament, the Books of Kings, Quran, Solomon, Women in OT, Wisdom

Old Testament Interpretation and the Postmodern Conditions
Zatroch, Ondrej ; Lukeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Biernot, David (referee)
The task of diploma thesis "Old Testament Interpretation and the Postmodern Conditions" is to critically reflect the course and current issues of Old Testament research. This reflection is based on the analysis of research situation and chosen approaches to the Old Testament. The thesis shows, that the Old Testament interpretation must be based on lively dialogue. It doesn't mean just the dialogue with the biblical texts or the state of current research, but also with the situation of the world often called as "postmodern". The important assumption of this diploma thesis is that the authentic interpretation includes also the constant and deep self-examination of interpreter and his place in the society. It doesn't mean, that the interpretation ought to be the self-presentation of interpreter. On the contrary, it should remain critical and solid, but also enacted in deep solidarity with the neighbour and shared world. The results of this diploma thesis show the importance of keeping the critical grounds of Old Testament research and interpretation. Only the intensive and unappealing criticism could be a basis for the future quality and solidness of the research and upholding its matter in wider research community and society. Another important aspect is the solidarity with the world. It means that...
