The Intractability of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Comparing The Delegitimizing Discourse in Political Speeches by Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from 2015 until 2018

This bachelor's thesis views and analyzes the Israel-Palestinian conflict through the lens of Louis Kriesberg's intractable conflict theory (Kriesberg, 1998) and Daniel Bar-Tal's theory of delegitimization (Bar-Tal,1998). This work compares mutual delegitimization and the discourse of the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas by using a thematic discourse analysis. This work builds specifically on the theory of delegitimization of Neta Oren and Daniel Bar-Tal (Oren, Bar-Tal, 2007), which consists of five dimensions of delegitimization: dehumanization, trait characterization, outcasting, political labels, and group comparison. A sample of speeches of Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from the years from 2015 until 2018 has been analyzed. The delineation is chosen in this way since in 1994, peace accords between Israel and Palestine broke down. Also in this period character of conflicts changed to so-called Third intifada, which consists of series of smaller frequent conflicts. The Israeli Druze: Military Service as a Tool to Influence Domestic and Foreign Policy

Master thesis entitled "The Israeli Druze: Military Service as a Tool to Influence Domestic and Foreign Policy" regards the relations of the Israeli Druze Community and the State of Israel. Druze people live also in Lebanon and Syria and are usually categorized as an ethno-religious and transnational group. They are distinctive for their secretive and esoteric religion and tightly-knit social bonds. The Israeli Druze community (composing less than 2 % of the Israeli population) is specific for its mandatory service in the Israeli Defense Forces, which marks a difference from other Arabic speaking citizens of Israel. The service in the Israeli army implies that the Israeli Druze people are loyal both to the state and the transnational Druze community. Using the framework of a theoretical concept of Strategic Military Refusal by Udi Lebel, the goal of the thesis is to examine whether the Israeli Druze community was able to influence domestic and foreign policy of the State of Israel in order to reach its own political goals, whether these efforts were intentional, strategic and successful. Political determinants and development of Israel's military strategy

Tato bakalářská práce sleduje vliv politické scény Izraele na vývoj izraelské strategie v průběhu historie a konfliktů, kterými si stát Izrael doposud prošel. Nejprve se práce zabývá strategií obecně, definicí války, strategií Izraele a charakteristikou politiky v Izraeli. Dále vznikem Izraele, konflikty a rozebírá vlády Izraele v průběhu konfliktů. Práce je psaná formou případové studie, kdy se na příkladech války o Nezávislost v roce 1948, spoluprací s Francií a Velkou Británií v průběhu Suezské krize, ohromující Šestidenní válce, nečekané Jom Kippurské válce, ale také na válce s Libanonem, která byla odlišná způsobem jednání izraelské vlády a následného postupu izraelských ozbrojených sil, ukáže, jak izraelské vlády vyvíjely svoji strategii vůči nepřátelům a jak byly války vedeny. Vzhledem ke skutečnostem, že vedení válek záleží částečně i na druhu vlády - v případě Izraele levice/pravice, práce rozebere posty premiérů Izraele v době válek a jejich politickou příslušnost a pokusí se dokázat rozdíly mezi levicí a pravicí ve způsobu vedení války. A také nekončící problémy s Hamásem a pásmem Gazy na jihu Izraele. Spojením poznatků z teoretické a analytické části práce zanalyzujeme strategii Izraele, a zda na její vývoj mají vliv vládnoucí strany, pravice nebo levice.

The principle of distinction and its implications for the conflict between Israel and the terrorist groups operating in the Gaza Strip Abstract In this thesis the main implications of the changed nature of armed conflicts on the principle of distinction are being discussed. The thesis opens with a look into the changed nature of armed conflicts and the implications of thereof. Further it concentrates on the parties involved in asymmetrical conflicts. With the raise of asymmetrical conflicts and appearance of terrorist groups as significant non-state actors, a discussion about the status of their members needed to be opened and - possibly - their rights and obligations reassessed. Regardless of their asymmetrical nature, these conflicts are still to be governed by international law treaties that have been adopted in a time, where more classical state vs. state wars were the norm. The effective international law therefore does not sufficiently reflect the nature of today's conflicts. On this account, the principle of distinction is being closely explored in this thesis in order to provide an understanding, whether it is indeed able to encompass the nature of terrorists. Framing of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Czech media

This diploma thesis is dedicated to framing of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Czech daily press in the years of 2012 and 2014. It presents the concept of framing, its connection to the concepts of agenda-setting and priming, then the framing process, ways of identification of frames in texts and typology of frames. Then it offers an overview of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Attention is payed to the relations between the Czech, respectively Czechoslovak republic and Israel and Palestine. The second chapter is also dedicated to selected researches of framing of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It describes six foreign researches and one from the Czech environment. Most attention is payed to their conclusions, especially to the sets of frames. Another important outcome of one of the described studies are ways of legitimization and delegitimization of conflict sides. These are together with the sets of frames used in a quantitative analysis focused on presence of the predefined frames in the dailies MF Dnes, Lidové noviny and Právo, and on the ways of legitimization and delegitimization of acts and positions of both the Israeli, as well as Palestinian side of the conflict. Annotation: The seven Noahide laws represent a divine non-Jewish complementary to Jewish law. This thesis has been looking for an answer to the question about concept of those laws, their content, intentions and contemporary use. The main method is analysis of original sources and investigating their mutual relations. Comparison of contemporary guides is also included.
