Left shift in LA and its cultural and historical context - the example of Bolivia
Novák, Ondřej ; Kochan, Jan (advisor) ; Jeníčková, Martina (referee)
During the period of 2005/2006 Latin America found itself in a situation historically unprecedented. Presidential election was held in twelve Latin American states as well as parliamentary elections in most of them. The left-wind parties and candidates won in most of the states. This result forces us to think about it. The subject and the goal of this bachelor thesis is hence the analysis of some factors which could have contributed to this left shift. The thesis is focused predominantly on the past and tries to elaborate historical and cultural aspects of factors concerned and put them in context with current development in Latin America. Although it deals primarily with the representative example of Bolivia, it equally relates the factors analysed to the region as a whole. This is in accordance with the division of factors in internal and external with the focus on internal factors. The policy of current bolivian government with president Evo Morales is described briefly as well because it reflects to some extent the historic and cultural facts under examination.

Nonverbal elements of advertising discourse in a diachronic view
KLEINOVÁ, Petra
The aim of diploma thesis is to cover the evolution and transformation of advertisement in connection with political, economical and social changes in the society in years 1918-1989. The work is primarily focused on nonverbal parts of the advertisement (image, color, graphics). For understanding of the advertisement as a whole it is necessary to take into account a verbal part too. Diploma thesis tries further to confirm or disprove a theory that advertisement can be one of the sources for cognition of values and standards of society. The work is divided into two big parts ? a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part contains general information about the advertisement that gives a summary about nature and functioning of the advertisement in particular historical periods. The theoretical part brings knowledge about an advertising discourse and its components (verbal and nonverbal) too. The important part of the work is classification of the advertisement into four stages of Czechoslovak society evolution in years 1918-1989. The second part of the work is focused on an analysis of acquired material that became the base for creation of whole this work. The database consists of six thousand advertisements acquired from printed journals. The material was collected in a period of more than one year. The basic sources were daily newspapers and between them especially their continuity in publishing was preferred. Due to the fact that the work tries to cover the period of seventy years long, the period of 1918-1989 is divided into four historical phases. Milestones of division into phases are important historical events that in consequence meant transformation of Czechoslovak society. Based on these social changes, changes of the advertisement and its nonverbal parts are monitored.

Kratochvíl, Jakub ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Šabatka, Michal (referee)
This thesis deals with the analysis of regional elections 2008 in Karlovy Vary region. It becomes a general rule, that the regional elections are taken as the elections of inferior degree, where voters vote primarily against the government. In my thesis, I put myself a question up to which extent the previous statement holds true. It has been shown, that regional policy can have also very important influence on the result of elections. Poeple was not satisfied by their governing regional politics and gave a green card to smaller parties. It resulted in the fact, that Karlovy Vary region has six parties (the most from the whole country) in regional council.

Encounters with Otherness in E. M. Forster's A Room With a View and D. H. Lawrence's The Lost Girl
Skopečková, Eva ; Grmelová, Anna (advisor) ; Ženíšek, Jakub (referee)
In my dissertation, I examine encounters with otherness in E. M. Förster's A Room With a View and D. H. Lawrence's The Lost Girl. Primarily, I focus on the development of the main protagonists, which is influenced by such a sudden encounter. I also discuss the particular views of the two writers concerning this issue. In both books, Forster and Lawrence dramatize their belief in the great potential of southern emotionality and suggest a sort of solution to the dehumanized and stiff life of the English middle classes, which the writers severely criticised. In both novels, Forster as well as Lawrence choose Italy as the representation of the great potential of the Southern nations and they place it against the criticised stiffness and sterility of the English middle classes. The portrayal of this southern element, however, differs in several aspects in the respective books. What is more, the conception of otherness appears in various forms in both works, reflecting their author's approaches. The depiction of the development of Forster's and Lawrence's heroines actually demonstrates their author's beliefs in a possible way for a young middle class woman oppressed by social conventions and values towards her inmost feelings and passions on the grounds of an encounter with otherness. Moreover, there is another...

Tůmová, Lucie ; Tumis, Stanislav (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
This work analyses social, political and mainly economic development of Iran in the 1980s. I will primarily focus on the Shi'ite Islam which controlled all the Iranian society at that time, headed by clerical leader ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. However, the most important event was the Iran-Iraq war which ruined the Iranian economy. This war influenced both Islamic Republic of Iran and The Middle East and its relationship with the West, particularly with the United States. So I will analyze the 1980s in Iran also in connection with foreign relations where the oil and the armament industry played an important role.
