The Utilization Of City Parks in Biology Education Centered on the Královská obora
Landová, Kateřina ; Dostál, Petr (advisor) ; Skýbová, Jana (referee)
The thesis "The Utilization Of City Parks in Biology Education Centered on the Královská Obora" consists of two sections - general and dendrologic section and didactic section. Both sections are based on detected wood species of Královská obora, which are 204 species, including cultivars. The first part deals with the Královská obora, its history and damage by the flood in August 2002 and with the significance and evolution of the city green. Chapters focused on dendrology contain comparison between planting from the 60's before the flood and current planting, including already mentioned list of wood species, recording of the wood species in a plan and their brief description added by a picture of a leaf. The didactic part deals with the mission of an excursion in biology education and identification of the wood species with the children; an excursion into Královská obora for primary and secondary schools, including worksheets, is proposed. This work has four annexes: a herbarium, photos of wood species (both are added on CD), PowerPoint presentation (OpenOffice), which has one chapter in the didactic section and HTML pages.

The Irish Peasant Novels of Emily Lawless Hurrish: A Study & Grania: The Story of an Island
Bonnerová, Kateřina ; Wallace, Clare (advisor) ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee)
The Anglo-Irish writer, Emily Lawless (1845 - 1913), has not, in the period following her death, been a very well-known, or widely appreciated, author. At the end of the 19th century though, she was popular with the English reading public, mainly because of her two contemporary Irish peasant novels, Hurrish: A Study and Grania: The Story of an Island, in which she managed to awaken English society to the plight of the impoverished Irish peasant. As Emily Lawless has not been widely studied nor written about only until recently, my access to resources, both primary and secondary, is very much limited. For this reason, I was able to acquire only one of the novels (Hurrish) as a printed publication, while the other novel Grania was available to me only in an electronic version. While William Linn's dissertation "The Life and Works of the Hon. Emily Lawless, First Novelist of the Irish Literary Revival" has been a valuable source of all the details of Lawless's biography and writings in general, the critical articles have been only a few. These include the 1980s first critical "appreciations" after years of neglect, by Elizabeth Grubgeld and Betty Webb Brewer, and more recent essays of James Cahalan, Jacqueline Belanger and Heidi Hansson. This thesis will attempt to introduce the writer in terms of life...

Patents: Means to Innovation or Strategic Ends?
Štěpánek, Martin ; Schwarz, Jiří (advisor) ; Vlasáková Baruníková, Michaela (referee)
This paper utilizes an extensive dataset of 163,663 US patents granted between 1976 and 2011 to 25 companies within four technological fields (aerospace in- dustry, computer manufacturing, semiconductor industry, and software devel- opment), to observe fluctuations in their value and characteristics. I find that certain indicators have changed immensely during the last 36 years, suggesting that newer patents are much less valuable than their predecessors. Further, using Data Envelopment Analysis, I estimate relative production efficiency of transformation of inputs (research and development expenses and company's workforce) into outputs (patent stock and its technological importance), to provide an empirical evidence for the recent theories of strategical patent ex- ploitation by large companies. I find that the efficiency varies considerably for different industries and also for the companies within an industry. There is an overall trend of increasing efficiency in patent production per unit of input, but there is none in the effectiveness of creating valuable inventions, which seems to depend only on the company itself. Downs rational choice theory and its applicability to explain votrers turnout in the Czech Republic
Koreň, Pavel ; Linek, Lukáš (advisor) ; Kabele, Jiří (referee)
This thesis deals with the applicability of Anthony Downs rational choice theory to the Czech environment, respectively the utility of its model to explain voter turnout and identification of rationality among Czech voters. First part provides theoretical foundation of work, explanation of basic concepts from which the work draws and alternative theories to the research problem. It also presents current state of society in terms of policy perceptions, and participation in elections. The core of the work is to present Downs' rational choice theory, different views on it and its possible extension in terms of criticism. The basic variables introduced are here, in particular how are percieved by various authors, what is their content and what affects them. In the analytical part, the variables are examined within the reserach aims in terms of frequency in the population and individual segments of the electorate. The primary parameters of the rational choice theory model are then tested in terms of interdependence, and in terms of their significance in the model and their influence on voter turnout. The conclusion summarizes the research results, and demonstrates evaluation of the applicability of the model to the Czech voters, the relevance of individual variables representing the rational choice...

Pravděpodobnostní posudek spolehlivosti potrubí s korozně-napěťovými trhlinami metodou SBRA
Václavek, L. ; Marek, Pavel ; Gajdoš, Lubomír
The subject of the paper is a demonstration of the probabilistic assessment method of a pressure pipeline damaged by a system of stress corrosion crack. The fracture criterion is based on the fact that in the instant of the fracture the magnitude of the J-integral is equal to its critical value. First the fracture criterion is evaluated deterministically for nominal values of input quantities. Then attention is paid to incorporation of the randomness input quantities and the quantification of its influence on the probability of failure calculated using SBRA method, utilizing the Monte Carlo simulation technique.
