Methodology of use greywater in the selected objects
Raček, Jakub ; Pollert,, Jaroslav (referee) ; Stanko,, Štefan (referee) ; Raclavský, Jaroslav (advisor)
The concept of reusing wastewater in buildings has recently become more important. This is due to change in climatic conditions and reduction of the yield of water resources. Greywater can broadly be defined as not extremely polluted wastewater coming from basins, showers, baths, kitchen sinks and washing machines. The concept based on the use of alternative rate sources wouldn't need same strict parameters as drinking water. Dissertation engage in collecting greywater from basins, showers and wash machines separately from the other more polluted domestic wastewater at the dorms, the laundry machines, the hotels, detached houses, the swimming pools, the office buildings and other buildings. The research showed that membrane filtration meets all needed parameters of water quality and can be used in house systems where we use cleansed white water to flush toilets, watering garden or grass areas. There is still a lack of experience and documentation for such system of operation in our country. Systems of use of greywater in selected objects are detaily solved in my dissertation directed at system proposal.
Influence of technological processes on the content of priority contaminants in wastewater treatment plants
Mikulíková, Iva ; Čáslavský, Josef (referee) ; Vávrová, Milada (advisor)
Water is one of the most abundant substances on Earth and it is an essential part of our lives. Its pollution has an impact on the whole ecosystem. Polybrominated diphenyl ethersare synthetic persistent organic pollutants used as flame retardants in various commercial and household products. This thesis is focused on assesing the degree of elimination of PBDEs in wastewater treatment plants with different technological processes of purification. The samples were collected in the three wastewater treatment plants in the south-moravian region, that means WTP Brno – Modřice, WTP Mikulov and WTP in VFU Brno.
Organic dye decomposition by AOP´s methods
Olexová, Barbora ; Dzik, Petr (referee) ; Kozáková, Zdenka (advisor)
This diploma thesis is focused on the study of the influence of advanced oxidation processes on degradation of organic dyes. The field of AOP – very effective physically-chemical methods of wastewater treatment – includes application of strong oxidation agents, UV and ionizing radiation and electrical discharges. For this thesis, two of these methods were chosen – the application of oxidation agent (ozone) and UV radiation. Along with electrolysis, which is mentioned rather marginally in this thesis (it is the subject of the previous thesis), these phenomena are products of electrical discharge in water, where they participate in the processes of degradation in a different way. For all measurement series, two direct azo dyes were chosen as model substances – C.I. Direct Blue 106 and C.I. Direct Red 79. The ozonizer, in which either oxygen or synthetic or technical air were loaded as carrier gases, was used for degradation of dyes by ozone. The generated ozone was loaded into the bubbling vessel with dye solution of different initial concentration (10–130 mg.dm-3), which was followed by other bubbling vessel with KI solution for the next analytical determination of the amount of generated ozone. The other parameters changed were the gas flow (1–2 dm3.min-1), ozonizer output (minimal and maximal), type of dye, pH value of the solution (neutral or acid) and additional electrolyte (NaCl, Na2SO4 or any). The reactor for the study of the influence of UV radiation on degradation of dyes was an UV sterilizer into which the equivalent volume of dye solution was added. The possibilities of experimental settings were limited and only the type of dye, an additional electrolyte and pH value of the dye solution were adjusted (as in the case of ozone). Several series of samples were measured with various input conditions which more or less influenced the degradation of investigated dyes in this experiment. It was found that for both used methods the Direct Blue 106 dye was more degradable (with significantly better results for ozone than for UV radiation). The degradation of Direct Red 79 dye proceeded only by ozone treatment, in the case of the application of UV radiation no degradation occurred. By investigation of the influence of initial concentration of dye on its degradation, it was confirmed that with the initial concentration enhancement the final concentration rises as well, whereas in low concentrations (10–50 mg.dm-3) the initial concentration has no effect. The addition of an electrolyte had an accelerating effect on dye degradation in both methods (NaCl and also Na2SO4 showed similar results though the degradation proceeded in different ways). The addition of HCl accelerated the degradation only in the case of UV radiation; during the application of ozone the pH level of the system did not have any influence on the degradation. Oxygen and synthetic air had the strongest effect on ozone degradation (comparable results); in the case of technical air the final dye concentration was higher up to 30 %. The gas flow of 1.5 dm3.min-1 was stated as optimal with the ozonizer output 30 W (maximal). At minimal power the ozonizer produced very low amount of ozone.
Hormonally active substances in the aquatic environment and risk to aquatic organisms and human.
Duisembay, Zhuldyz ; Bušová, Milena (advisor) ; Ezechiáš, Martin (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to investigate the presence, sources and impacts of hormonally active substances, or endocrine disruptors (EDs), in the aquatic environment. These substances, including long-lived persistent organic pollutants (POPs), e. g. pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and non-persistent pollutants such as bisphenol A and alkyphenols, directly or indirectly affect the hormonal systems of aquatic organisms and humans. For instance, it was observed, that elevated concentrations of certain progestogens impact fertility, reproductive processes, induce transcriptional changes, and alter sex ratios within fish populations. Numerous studies in the field focus on evaluating the manifestation of EDs in water, their effects on behavior and vital functions of aquatic organisms and humans, and the challenges associated with their detection and removal from the wastewater discharged into the environment. Recent researches have revealed elevated concentrations of specific EDs in various regions, including Czech Republic (significant concentrations of levonorgestrel, megestrol acetate (MGA), drospirenone and dienogest were detected in Blanice river). This indicates a lack of regulations and potential difficulties in effectively removing these substances from water with...

The topic of the diploma thesis is "The Issue of Industrial Wastewater Treatment and its Inclusion in Biology Education." The aim of the thesis is to familiarize the reader more deeply with industrial wastewater, to find out how the general population perceives the issue, and specifically to propose and verify in practice how the topic could be included in the teaching of natural history. The work consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part of the work is devoted to the definition of industrial wastewater and its composition. It characterizes selected industrial wastewater and treatment processes that are used to remove pollutants in industrial wastewater. It also marginally touches on the topic of water management in the industry. The chapters of the theoretical part also summarize the impact of wastewater pollution in relation to humans and the environment. The work also includes a section dedicated to legislation related to industrial wastewater treatment. The conclusion of the theoretical part of the work is devoted to teaching methods suitable for the inclusion of the issue of industrial wastewater in teaching at secondary schools. The practical part is devoted to own research to find out the perception of the population about the issue of wastewater treatment and...
Removal of emerging contaminants from water by a hybrid membrane-catalytic oxidation process
Bourassi, Mahdi ; Klusoň, Petr (advisor) ; Bendová, Magdalena (referee) ; Granger, Pascal (referee)
Emerging contaminants were detected in different surface waters around the globe. These active molecules affect the environment even at trace concentrations. They are sourced mainly from wastewater treatment plants. These contaminants persist the conventional wastewater treatments and gain their way to the environment. This can cause different complications: bioaccumulation, antibiotic resistance, and environmental degradation. The presented Ph.D. thesis is focused on the treatment of wastewater loaded with persistent pollutants. This thesis aimed to evaluate the membrane separation technology and the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) process to associate them in a hybrid process to address this issue. The first part of the hybrid process is focused on challenges faced with the membrane separation process, mainly fouling and selectivity. This part gathers 6 publications all focused on wastewater treatment with membrane separation. As a starter, the review covers the issue presented by the emerging contaminants and the potential of the membrane process for water recovery. The review highlighted the advantages and challenges (fouling and selectivity) of the membrane process. The chapter about membrane fouling gathers two publications: "Removal of ibuprofen from water by different types of...
Indirect discharge of industrial wastewater into sewerage
Keprtová, Karolína ; Kolář, Jan
Wastewater discharge is one of the sources of environmental pollution. The main sources of wastewater pollution are industrial wastewaters. After treatment, industrial wastewater can be discharged directly into the recipient or indirectly into a sewerage network terminated by another stage of wastewater treatment. Indirect wastewater discharges are governed by the contractual relationship between the wastewater producer and the sewerage network operator. Limits for indirectly discharged wastewater are not set by legislation. It is only in recent years that the regulation of indirect discharges of wastewater has been promoted in Commission implementing decisions establishing best available techniques (BAT) conclusions, under Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council (BAT conclusions).

Biotechnological potential of algae and cyanobacteria from low temperature environments
Faško, Adam ; Nedbalová, Linda (advisor) ; Vítová, Milada (referee)
With the interest in biofuels rising, public awareness of the biotechnological potential of algae and cyanobacteria has grown and there is discussion about other possible uses of these microorganisms. Algae and cyanobacteria from low temperature environments possess exceptional properties as part of their adaptation strategies. The aim of this work is to evaluate whether these properties can be exploited in biotechnology. In my theses, I focus on the three most frequently discussed areas of application of algae and cyanobacteria from cold environments: production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, dyes and antioxidants, and wastewater treatment. Based on the available literature, I concluded that algae and cyanobacteria from low temperature environments can outperform mesophilic species in terms of production of desired substances or nutrient uptake from the medium under certain conditions. Selection of suitable strains, optimization of culture conditions and application of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology will have a major impact on the utilization rate of these microorganisms.
Classification of concentrate from membrane processes
Vespalec, Jan ; Mergl, Václav (referee) ; Repková, Martina (advisor)
The Master’s Thesis deals with the classification of concentrate from membrane processes, specifically reverse osmosis concentrate. Membrane technology was used in two locations, namely a wastewater treatment plant location and an industrial laundry location. The reuse of water by using membrane processes requires consideration of the management of the concentrate further on. The concentrate may be concentrated to the point where it is not meeting the legally defined limits. The goal of this work is to determine whether reverse osmosis concentrate can be discharged to the surface water/sewage system and whether it is a hazardous waste or not. The conclusion of this work is that the monitored parameters occurring in the reverse osmosis concentrate are over the limits to be discharged to a surface water/sewage system but are below the limit for classification as hazardous waste.
Industrial wastewater in Czech republic
Sikora, Petr ; Konečná, Eva (referee) ; Vondra, Marek (advisor)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide a comprehensive insight into various aspects of industrial wastewater production in the Czech Republic. In addition to studying industrial wastewater in general, it also focuses specifically on winery wastewater. Wine production represents an alternative to another drink very popular among many Czechs – beer. To better understand this topic, the thesis combines a summary of theoretical knowledge with up-to-date statistics regarding production and emissions of industrial wastewater using data provided mainly by Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, Czech Statistical Office, and Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. The results can be used for monitoring the development of quality and quantity of wastewater emissions during recent decades, as well as responses to various influencing events and factors. An overview of important legislation documents regarding this topic is included as well, followed by a brief selection of emission standards.
