Neurorehabilitation after brain injury. Therapeutic possibilities.
Angerová, Yvona ; Lippertová-Grünerová, Marcela (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Jaroslav (referee) ; Kozler, Petr (referee)
Neurorehabilitation is a multidisciplinary rehabilitation process used in patients with neurological diseases. These patients have not only movement disorders but also cognitive and neurobehavioral problems as well as aphasias. Their rehabilitation is a long term process and the results are often unsatisfactory. Neuroplasticity - physiological basis for neurorehabilitation induces functional restitution or recovery after secondary brain damage. Various neuroprotective substances (e.g. erythropoietin - EPO) are tested to empower mechanisms of plasticity after brain injury. Preclinical studies testing efficacy of those substances in animal brain damage models are essential to prepare clinical trials. The aim of the study was to reveal the influence of EPO combined with rehabilitation on functional outcomes after global cerebral hypoxia. FIM (Functional independence measure) test was used for functional evaluation and Meilli test for visual memory of the patients who attended special program for rehabilitation in clinical part. Patients who came earlier had better prognosis than patients who came later. In experimental part three-months old male Wistar albino rats were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia for 60 minutes in an experimental chamber, simulating an altitude of 8000 m. Half of the animals received...

Land Cover Changes in connection with the Iron Curtain using Corine Land Cover Database
Najman, Jiří ; Romportl, Dušan (referee) ; Bičík, Ivan (advisor)
This master's thesis focuses on land use and land cover changes in relation to the Iron Curtain and its fall. The area of concern was delimited with a buffer zone of 15 km from the Iron Curtain (both sides). The space was created according to the administrative structure consistent with the year 1989. Different processes in the economy of the countries involved has had an undoubtedly significant influence on land cover and land use structure and its changes. Agronomic politics in European democratic states was more market oriented and that was mirrored in land use structures. On the other hand, soil in countries under soviet influence was cultivated on infertile grounds, which was untenable after 1990. The fall of the Warsaw Treaty stood for radical changes in the society of states that were directly influenced by the Soviet Union. Based on this fact we can presume more intensive land cover changes on the side of the former East in comparison with the Western countries. This expectation was confirmed using CORINE Land Cover dataset. The former East has undergone changes nearly five times more in comparison with the opposite side of the Iron Curtain boundary between 1990 and 2000. Essential variance was also remarkable amidst individual zones separated by administrative boundaries. The most stable...

Effect of pentoxifyllin on advanced dementia with predominated cardiovascular symptoms
Mészárosová, Jitka ; Ďoubal, Stanislav (advisor) ; Náhlovský, Jiří (referee) ; Mrňa, Boris (referee)
The high consumption of Pentoxifyllin in patients suffering from vascular dementia led to a concern and a clinical trial conducted in the nursing home in Česká Kamenice from 2001 to 2004. The retrospective survey was carried out on 176 patients and lasted 12 months. If we consider the currently valid criteria for the diagnosis of vascular dementia, the patients showed an advanced form of the disease. The experiment did not demonstrate any positive influence of treatment on either cardiovascular diseases or the mortality of afflicted patients. Despite the fact that we could expect the medicament to have a favourable influence on the symptoms of the advanced form of vascular dementia it was not proven so. It is absolutely essential for doctors to have good background knowledge of diseases and all kinds of particularities accompanying old age, especially when it comes to the early detection of dementia. High consumption of Pentoxifyllin led to a number of experiments and studies trying to prove its efficiency and hence justify prescripcions for the drug. An extended study carried out in 1996 demonstrated the favourable effects of Pentoxifyllin. Our experiment has also showed signs of improvement in pateints with weaker forms of dementia. Final decision on the suitability of the treatment with...

The stay and activities of Mann brothers in Prague between 1933-1938
Cvachová, Veronika ; Mravcová, Marie (referee) ; Holý, Jiří (advisor)
This thesis deals with the stay and activities of Thomas and Heinrich Mann in the Czechoslovakia between 1933 and 1938. It is divided into three main parts. After evaluating a general situation of the German refugees in the Czechoslovakia, it focuses on the older of both Mann brothers, Heinrich. Although his wife and daughter permanently stayed in Prague, Heinrich himself visited Prague only once during the 1930s. On the other hand he was the first member ofthe Mann family to gain the Czechoslovak citizenship and he actively supported the exile anti-Nazis endeavours in his essayistic works that were frequently published in the Prague-basedjournals and papers. The third part of this thesis deals with Thomas Mann. It attempts to show that Thomas appeared to be much more connected with the German environment and thus he essentially suffered from an uneasy reconciliation with the enforced exile. Consequentially he managed to keep a certain distance to the actual political events at least until 1936. Afterescaping the Nazis Germany he visited the Czechoslovakia three times while taking lectures all around the Europe. He undertook the last visit already as a Czechoslovak citizen. His activities in the Czechoslovakia wcre mainly connected with the Foundation of Thomas rv1ann, which aimed at supporting Gennan exile...

The evaluation of marketing research was done at the 1st and 2nd level of analysis with attention on differences among particular groups of respondents. All identified information is summarized as at the end of the thesis, so in the previous subchapter, which also contains some marketing recommendations.

Alakali-metal-cation homeostasis in pathogenic Candida species
Elicharová, Hana ; Sychrová, Hana (advisor) ; Heidingsfeld, Olga (referee) ; Půta, František (referee)
Several tens of Candida species belong to the opportunistic human pathogens capable of inducing life-threatening infections in immunocompromised patients. Virulence of single Candida species depends among others on their resistance to the variable external conditions. The maintenance of alkali-metal-cation homeostasis, which means the ability to accumulate sufficient amount of potassium cations and on the other hand to survive under high extracellular concentrations of alkali-metal cations, is essential for growth and virulence of Candida cells. We observed the negative effect of fluconazole (FLC) on salt-tolerance of six Candida species and found that it is independent of the species level of FLC- resistance. FLC hyperpolarizes plasma membrane of Candida cells and therefore increases non-specific uptake of alkali-metal cations which results in strongly increased salt-sensitivity of Candida cells. The FLC-induced hyperpolarization also results in an increased sensitivity of Candida cells to the antifungals which are positively charged and are driven into the cells by the membrane potential. The effect of fluconazole on membrane potential and thus on the uptake of alkali- metal cations into the cell turned our attention to the homeostasis of potassium cations whose high intracellular concentration is...

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) used to reveal differences in the cell wall structure of of yound and old S. cerevisiae yeast cells.
Schwarzová, Tereza ; Plášek, Jaromír (advisor) ; Shukurov, Andrey (referee)
The main goal of this MSc. is to use Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in studies of yeast cell wall structure aimed at (i) expected differences between young and aged S. cerevisiae cells, (ii) the effects of glucose concentration in culthuring media on the quality of yeast cell wall. AFM can image biological systems with molecular resolution in real time, and under natural condition. Numerous AFM images of the surface of S. cerevisiae yeast cells (strains AD 1-3,IL,US and JC 482A, AD-JC 488A) have been obtained, which surpassed that one of standard results of still-rare AFM studies of yeast cells. No clear effect of glucose concentration has been found. On the other hand, AFM studies have revealed ageing-related changes in the structure of yeast cells (crumpling, rough surface). Highresolution images of yeast bud scars, including their fine details were also obtained.

Determining the Number of Selected Objects for Five-Year Old Children in Connection with the Characte of the Selected Objects
Škopková, Jana ; Kaslová, Michaela (advisor) ; Kropáčková, Jana (referee)
The topics of this work are natural numbers and arithmetic grounding for children of pre-school age. It discusses preparative activities at five-year old children searching if determination of objects' number depends on objects' kind. The investigation is focused on tiny objects, those that the child is able to grip in one hand. After verifying of this eventual dependency there are some other activities allowing find out the maximal level of differences among various methods. Beyond the objects' counting up strategy in the work there are some interesting results from comparison among individual children and kindergartens. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
