Parisian Journal as a Historical Source
Prošvicová, Lenka ; Nejedlý, Martin (advisor) ; Svátek, Jaroslav (referee)
EN The present work describes and compares French Armagnac dynasty and its allies. It primarily uses two period works, in which there is not only an image of Armagnac's recorded but also a long list of their actions on the soil of the French kingdom. Thanks to the specificity of the both main sources, the work also deals with the approach of thinking and perception of the authors who revealed their sympathies, antipathies and their own opinions through their personality. With this partiality, there is an opportunity to get different views of the Armagnacs, as well as their greatest enemies Burgundians. The aim of this work is to familiarize a reader with the Armagnac's dynasty, in a way as the period authors have seen and described. Also, try to discover the attitudes and beliefs that they left at lines of their works that are dated back to the high medieval France. Key words: Paris, Armagnacs, Hundred Years War, Charles VI., Bernard VII. Armagnacs, civil war, Saint-Denis abbey, medieval France
Foreign Cultural Policies of Global Cities: the Case of London and Paris in the years 2007-2016
Chocholová, Anna ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This Master's thesis examines the foreign cultural policies of global cities, and incorporates case studies of London and Paris during the years 2007-2016. It answers the question why, in what manner and with what results do these two global cities form the cultural sphere of their respective foreign policies. Through the analysis of the British and French cultural diplomacy, the thesis determines whether the foreign cultural efforts of global cities differ from the ones of their states and share common features among themselves, or whether the influence of the national models, contrary to the global cities theories, still plays the key role. Furthermore, the question of if, to what extent and with what results do Paris and London participate in cooperation among cities is addressed in order to asses Saskia Sassen's hypothesis about the formation of transnational urban networks. The thesis concludes that even though the cultural spheres of London's and Paris's foreign policies share many similarities, the influence of state models is still evident. London, as opposed to Paris, just like the United Kingdom as opposed to France, makes use of modern methods, including marketing and city/state branding, and at the same time puts emphasis on economic profit. On the other hand, both cities use similar tools and...

in English This Master's Thesis deals with guidebooks about Paris published in France, Czechoslovakia and the United States of America between the years 1918-1939. It analyses how the French capital city is presented in the guidebooks and how far the representation differs according to the country of publishing. The first two chapters deal with the modern history of tourism up until the interwar period and with the formation of major collections of guidebooks. The following chapters use a comparative perspective to analyse three major aspects of tourist guidebooks about Paris: itineraries; recommended places and monuments (the so-called "must- sees"); and global images of Paris. The analysis reveals that the country of publishing had only a limited impact on the content of the guidebooks; rather, the books largely respected established rules and patterns within the genre.
