Gender Stereotypization in Sitcom Comeback
Follová, Klára ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Dominik, Šimon (referee)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA V PRAZE FAKULTA SOCIÁLNÍCH VĚD Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky Klára Follová Genderová stereotypizace v sitcomu Comeback Diplomová práce Praha 2011 2 Abstract In sitcoms we can find gender stereotypes, as well as other kinds of stereotypes. They are the same as those, which are incorporated in structures of real society. The reason of their existence in sitcoms is the fact that they are incorporated in models of characters, which mutual conflicts are what the sitcom humour is being built on. Because of the fact that the primary aim of sitcom is humour and not the reflexion of society, stereotypes are not as problematical as in the real society: sitcom uses them, but also criticizes them by its humour. On the case of the analyzed Czech sitcom "Comeback" I have found that confirming or denying gender stereotypes has no unified or systematical form in this kind of television output; so, in one single episode of some sitcom we can find both confirmation and denial of the same one stereotype. The reason of it is that stereotypes are used to build up comic situations, which is the main aim of sitcoms; therefore the main frame area of a sitcom is one scene leading to a point. Usually, sitcoms use to be based on situations of common life, therefore in building a joke they must remind...

The thesis "Journalists and their sources - using sample regarding issues of home deliveries and hormonal contraception" aimes to observe and analyze the techniques journalists are using while working with their sources of informations. Quantitative and qualitative research of six Czech prints (four dailies, two magazines) is dealing with questions Who is being portrait as a relevant source of information for topics, that are considered to be "soft" or "women's", How his/her point of view is represented or How this work with sources contributes to (re)definiton of hormonal contraception discourse and home deliveries discourse. These discourses (the historical point of view, as well as feminists, and today's situation) are discussed, together with concepts of sociology of sources, issue of objectivity, social construction of reality, status of experts in the society and other related topics, in theoretical part of the thesis. The qualitative survey showed the key role of experts for both of analyzed topics (hormonal contraception and home deliveries) and it in detail displays the framing and using their image as an authority, in opposition to "voice of non-experts" (for hormonal contraception topics) and "alternative group of mothers and midwifes" (for topics related to home deliveries).

Kovačková, Monika ; Marcelli, Miroslav (advisor) ; Havelková, Hana (referee)
Thesis "Sexism in the television advertisement for fragrances" analyzes the relationship with the media - especially television commercial- and the social construction called gender. The phenomenon advertisement and gender issues are trapped in their complexity. Advertisement is framed within the wider context of technical imagines, whose specific characteristics advertisement takes, but it is also attention paid its part formal and content aspects. Gender images in advertising are subjected to semiotic analysis, the traditional semiotic approach is enriched with the dimension of social context. Thesis aims to capture the complexity of the relationship between advertising messages and images of gender and bridge the gap between the two opposing poles, which the studies of these issues necessarily face: advertising reflects the current social climate vs. advertising forms society and its structure. Text reflects both these trends. The media representations in the advertising message are viewed as an important factor shaping gender. It turns out that the society and its concept of gender and advertising with its media images of gender form a whole, all of which parts influence and form each other. The aim of this work is this process subjected to critical examination and semiotic analysis.

Vachadze, Ana ; Zájedová, Iivi (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
Focusing on the post-communist developments in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the research prevails why the transition was successful in the Baltic States? Analyzing "the Baltic way" to the European Union, the paper discusses the certain aspects of economic, political and social transition. Cultural trauma of social change will also be concerned. Conceptual part of the work focuses on the theory of modernization which is discussed in the civilizational context. It is assumed that modernization is rather multi-dimensional than universal, homogeneous process. The Baltic modernization shows the patterns of original western European type of modernization with clearly defined end-up goal: political and cultural "return to the West". Empirical part of the research focuses on the economic, political and social transformation processes in the Baltic States. The main discussions on Economic transition heated around the question: how to build capitalism? What was possible and desirable? What policy should have been chosen? Baltic States went through the radical economic reform called "shock therapy". The essence of "this program is discussed in contradiction with "gradualism'" - an alternative strategy of economic transition. Political transition encompasses the state-building, nation-building and society...

From Feudalism to Capitalism - Institutional Analysis of the West
Radošťanová, Iveta ; Mládek, Josef (advisor) ; Štěpánek, Pavel (referee)
European society has passed a distressful development on its way to its current form. Every phase of this wandering to the higher levels and shapes of the civilization is characterized by certain organization of the social ties, what I would like to take a closer look at. I will consider a development in the western countries at the time, when feudal system of the medieval society appeared to be archaistic and deficient, whereat it was replaced by a new social system, which was modern and which was able to stand with transforming needs of the society better than narrow-minded feudalism. I will not enquire the exact historical development, my tendency is to analyse the institutional changes more generally. First I will try to describe general traits of the transition, then I will attend to some concrete countries and their differences. I will talk about France, Spain, the Netherlands and England.

The beginnigs of American feminism
Mergeščíková, Tamara ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee)
in English The objective of this thesis is to trace and depict the beginnings of feminist thought in America. Its aim is to show how feminist thought was developed within the Puritan/Protestant community as well as its effect on the African-Americans who were integrated into the Puritan community as an inferior race through the slave trade. The thesis uses qualitative and quantitative methods of research. A variety of primary and secondary material is used to describe the beliefs of the people in the era, such as the division of the male and female spheres of influence. The views of both men and women are provided to create a more objective description of the era and its beliefs. In addition, the subject is considered from the American point of view as well as the point of view of foreigners, such as the French historian and political thinker Alexis de Tocqueville. Furthermore, feminism is depicted in various realms of the society - in literature, in the theatre, in the political and in the social life. The quantitative methods include statistical data on wages to prove women were not fairly treated in comparison to men, as well as data from the 1860 Census to prove the drastic effects of slavery upon African-American women and the immorality within the white society's marriage institution. The...

Fritscherová, Julie ; Hubinková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Kaštovská, Lenka (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the current situation of women in managerial positions in relation to the obstacles that hinder their career progression, as well as naming the features and capabilities that they prefer, and to characterize the possible existence of female leadership style. The theoretical part focuses on the role of women in society, concepts related to gender issues and the difference between management and leadership. I also deal with selected models describing the approach of managers to their subordinates. In the practical part based on qualitative research methods, I find out what opinion managers have to that situation in the Czech Republic. In conclusion, the thesis provides recommendations for a more detailed investigation of the area.
