Americanization: American Television Culture and Its Impact on the Czech broadcast

This thesis deals with a phenomenon of 'Americanization', which can be explained as a process when the culture and lifestyle of the United States of America penetrate the culture of other countries. Specifically, the thesis focuses on one of the most influential and the most influenced kind of culture - the television broadcast, which has been enriched by the United States with several new types of programs and innovations. The first part puts Americanization into historical context of the Czech Republic and also describes two of the most influential elements of American TV: Nielsen ratings and reality show. Further, the second part includes several analytical contemplations on Americanization and examines how and to which extent the American broadcast has affected the Czech one.
Nákupné maniačky - fashion show or reality show?

The Master's thesis is focused on the Slovakian TV show Nákupné maniačky and its' audience. The purpose of the thesis is to reveal the motivations leading to watching this show and to explore, whether the viewers perceive the show as a fashion show which allows them to draw inspiration, or rather as a reality show that should entertain them. The theoretical part introduces the concepts as audience, uses and gratifications and reality show genre. The final analysis of the acquired data is based on these terms but it aims to invent a new hypothesis. The second part is devoted to the research that is based on a qualitative method of a grounded theory. Required data was collected by the semi-structured interviews with viewers divided into two age categories. The result of categorizing data indicates that for all viewers the main motivation for watching the show is to have fun. Participants reported enjoying the program because of its' humour, while fashion plays an irrelevant role. The findings also show that participants are aware of interventions of production and they explained manipulating competitors as a strategy of the broadcasters to entertain audience and attract more viewers. This assumption was confirmed by an informant interview with one of the creators of the show.
Beginning and rise of the Czech docusoap

Bachelor thesis "Beginnings and Expansion of the Czech docusoap" focuses on a young television genre "docusoap". After the first introductory chapter, the second chapter will present a brief history of television as a dynamic medium. The third chapter is focused on the concept of docusoap and its definition in the context of other genres. Fourth chapter, the practical part of the thesis, outlines the genre on commercial television stations in the US, which has a long tradition. I will try to analyze selected projects of implemented docusoap genre of television in the US. Other chapters present docusoap in Czech surroundings in both public and commercial television. Selected titles are differed in their themes and I will try to make an analysis of the selected formats. Eventually I`ll compare Czech docusoap with shows made in USA, where this genre is very well established.
Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Cultural Study of the Reality TV Phenomenon Survivor

This bachelor thesis is occupied with the phenomenon of the reality TV show Survivor (CBS, 2000). This cultural essay examines the historical development of the reality TV genre. Further, it studies cultural meanings of the reality TV show Survivor, such as a social darwinism, rituals, a life in a community or a voting drama. The main part deals with possibilities of the representation of masculinity in television. Multiple masculinities are analyzed by using the methodology of men's studies, especially through the perspective of the hierarchy of masculinities and the hegemonic masculinities by Raewyn Connell, and through the concept of the mutilated man by Elisabeth Badinter. The final case study is focused on the representation of nonhegemonic masculinities in reality TV show Survivor.
TV dating: search for love or fun?

Bachelor's thesis describe phenomenon of TV Dating Shows. Thesis is focusing on a few elements which TV Dating Shows contain. First of all it explains concept of the reality TV, which shows real people and their true stories. Secondly it investigates motivation of participants and their behaviour in front of cameras. In a third line it look into perception of the love by participants and connection between motivation and behaviour of the participants and their point of view to dating and family. Fourth explored aspect of TV Dating Shows is impact of such type of programmes to society and participants. The thesis confirmed that TV Dating Shows could work as a dating option on condition there is such motivation of all participants. The investigation also confirmed that realisation of the shows is adjusted to viewers expectation and requirements, which are measured by ratings.
Television entertainment in 2013

Bachelor's thesis called "Television entertainment in 2013" deals with trends, basic signs and kinds of TV shows belonging to the genre of television entertainment (TV fun) broadcasted in Czech republic. The first and theoretical chapter's goal is to outline some essential terms related to the genre and television entertainment. The rest of the work has been devoted to the actual analysis of individual programs. The work is divided into Czech and foreign series, Czech and foreign game shows, reality television and Czech and foreign entertainment programs.
The audiences of reality shows aired by the Czech television channels with emphasison university educated people watching Hotel Paradise

The thesis has a goal to investigate the audience of reality shows available on Czech broadcasting market. Different types of shows will be analysed using selected parameters through the quantitative analysis. We will look for the similar and different parameters of audiences. The thesis is mostly focused on the show Hotel Paradise and its qualitative analysis.
Electronic surveillance in the area of consumption and media

5 Abstract My diploma thesis is focused on electronic surveillance in the area of consumption, marketing and media. Electronic surveillance is a form of collecting and evaluating data, which were created as a secondary product of electronic devices. The use of new technologies and internet allows spying their users and saving the received data to both state and commercial databases. Subsequent data use is common in the business or crime prevention area. This practice brings the risk of privacy disruption, influencing and directing people. The diploma thesis consists of three main chapters. The first chapter follows up the history of surveillance and its development. The second part is focused on formation of the electronic surveillance and describes different areas of surveillance. The third chapter relates to one concrete area - consumption and marketing. Television singing competitions as a contemporary phenomenon

The concept of TV's singing talent shows of the past decade has varied from the concept we were used to seeing in the last decade of the 20th century. It is a new approach where the audience is drawn into the contest by participating in decision- making of who goes through to the next round and who will ultimately win. The goal of this thesis is to prove (or disprove) my assumption that these talent shows are a contemporary phenomenon. I will attempt to define the most popular shows, describe their inner workings, look for the common features and compare their concepts. Verify the use of TV as an interactive media with an option to vote via a person's mobile phone to improve the ratings. To compare these shows with those from the second half of the 20th century. Reasons why people like to watch these TV singing talent shows and what target audience are these shows appealing to.
Factors of success of TV Chefs-"Cooking showorthiness"

There is only little attention payed to cooking shows in academic world. Mostly only mass media and public give their opinion on this topic. Due to many shows that exist and their spread, it is sufficient to concentrate on them also in academic writings. This diploma thesis tries to define cooking shows as genre. In analytic part it concentrates on one important aspect of cooking shows - their chefs. At first this thesis gives theoretic ground to cooking shows. It describes theories which are dealing with food. Then it takes a look on theories describing processes in contemporary culture. It is followed by chapter about reality TV and reality shows. History part about cooking shows contents also description of most important cooking shows and their chefs, both foregin and Czech production. At the end of theory part the position of cooking shows as TV genre is stated. In this thesis, new and unique term was created - TV chefs' values. It describes set of factors, which are important for TV chefs' to have to suceed. These factors are natural acting, sense of humor, loving food and vocational education in the field. The reseaarch was based on watching three cooking shows and interviews with people responsible for choosing chefs to these cooking shows.
