The hunger strike of Irish republican prisoners in 1981 from the point of view of British press

In 1981 a hunger strike broke out wich was held in the correctional facility Maze in Belfast. The hunger strike was held by Irish republican prisoners and ten men starved themselves to death. This strike was the culmination of a protest against the abolition of the Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. This thesis focuses around the hunger strike of the Northern Irish prisoners and describes the background of the protest. The theoretical framework briefly describes the history of the Northern Irish conflict and the course of the hunger strike. Furthermore, this bachelor thesis describes the goals of the protesters and the main protagonists of the strike are introduced to the reader. The application part of this thesis is devoted to the qualitative analysis of this hunger strike. The main goal of this research is to find out to what extent British newspapers coverd this problematic situation in Northern Ireland and what was their attitude to the whole situation. The application section focuses on the coverage of British newspapers from a qualitative analysis perspective.
Political marketing of Sinn Féin between 1996-2007

This bachelor thesis examines the political marketing of Northern Ireland political party Sinn Féin between 1996-2007. The thesis is divided in three chapters based on electoral terms to Northern Ireland Forum and afterwards Northern Ireland Assembly. During this period, Sinn Féin undergoes a considerable development. This development is divided into phases, which helps to determine which type of party is Sinn Féin according to Jennifer Lees-Marshment's typology of parties. Sinn Féin is shifting from a party oriented on product (POP) to a party oriented on sales (SOP). Sinn Féin is consistently changing its approach towards the politics in Northern Ireland. From an extremist party, which is unwilling to participate in state's politics, to not only mainstream party, but also the second strongest party in Northern Ireland. During several periods of time, the party professionalizes its communication within the party, but also its communication towards media. The party is gradually developing new "product", which is based on a support of peace process and Good Friday Agreement. With time, the party faces a problem in connection with the paramilitary organization IRA with which was Sinn Féin linked in the past. The Irish issue in the light of the Brexit debates

The topic of this thesis is the Irish issue in the light of the Brexit debates. British people decided to leave the European Union in referendum in June 2016. Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty was activated 29th of March 2017. Two years long negotiating period started from that date. The withdrawal agreement proposal which was approved by all 27 members of the European Union was rejected three times by British parliament. Brexit was postponed until the end of October of 2019. Future relationship on the island of Ireland with Irish backstop became the main barrier of Brexit negotiations. Both sides of negotiations agree on no possibility of hard border between Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Both of them want to follow The Good Friday Agreement of 1998. On the other hand none of them is willing to step aside from their earlier requirements. Theresa May, British prime minister, decided to leave the EU Custom Union and the European Single Market resolutely. The EU rejected to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement proposal that includes the Irish backstop. The Irish backstop guarantee maintaining an open border on the island of Ireland in the event that the UK leaves the EU without securing an all-encompassing deal. Securitisation of Organised Violence Phenomena in Europe: The Cases of Great Britain and Italy

The diploma thesis titled Securitisation of Organized Violence in Europe: The Case of Great Britain and Italy deals with the analysis of security discourses in the United Kingdom during the conflict in Northern Ireland and Italy during the war with the Sicilian Mafia according to the securitization theory of the so-called Copenhagen School and their subsequent comparison. The main aim of this thesis is to capture the form of securitization processes in Italy in connection with the local organized crime. To reach this objective the situation in Italy is confronted with securitization processes in Northern Ireland whose conflict is a frequent subject of international relations and security studies. The theory of securitization as a research tool is presented in its original form formulated by the Copenhagen School and is supplemented by numerous criticisms by later securitization theorists. A significant part of the thesis is focused on a thorough analysis of historical and social context of the investigated phenomenon and on capturing of many securitization statements of political actors to which this work is primarily oriented. This thesis deals with Anglo-Irish relations and the influence of the Anglo-Irish War of Independence in 1919-1921. It pays closer attention to the historical context of the conflict and particularly the issues of the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century and furthermore on the war itself and the following affairs. Thesis examines what impact the independence from the British had on the political and economical situations in Ireland and how the Anglo-Irish relations transformed after it.
The United States' influence on Northern Ireland conflict resolution

This thesis' topic is The United States' influence on Northern Ireland conflict resolution. The Norther Ireland conflict has its roots in the 17th century, when protestants from Scotland and England started to come to the Ulster region. Religion differences between the inhabitants, most of the original population were Catholics, led over the centuries to the division of two ethnics on the Ulster territory - protestant and catholic. After the partition of the island in 1921 the southern part declared independence, however the Northern Ireland territory remained a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The conflict between ethnics sharpened itself, because most of the Catholics wanted to united the island under Irish rule (the republicans), while protestants wanted to remained in the union with the Great Britain (the unionists and the loyalists). At the end of the 1960's the conflict turned itself into a violent one and the attacks and killing continued for the next thirty years during the period called "the Troubles." The conflict was settled by the end of the 1990's with a contribution of the governments of the Republic of Ireland, the Great Britain and the US. Protection of personal rights in continental system and common law

With the increased global infringement of personal rights, it is necessary to be aware of the protection in the different legal systems, especially Anglo-American. Even if the consequences are to be felt in the domestic legal order, the enforceability is recognized under the foreign legal order. The protection is worldwide and through the case law from the European Court of Human Rights the two legal systems - Common law and the Civil Law are penetrating the legislation and the case law in respect of the institute of the protection of personal rights. The doctorate thesis presents the complex introduction to the area of protection of personal rights in the Common law, especially in English law, Commonwealth countries and USA that has not been presented yet for the Czech legal professionals. The thesis explains theoretical concept of the Common law and its background for the purpose of explanation of differences of examined legal orders. The institute is explained on the key historical case law that led to establish the Common law principles. The thesis uses the current and topical legal cases and problems that the orders face in the 21st Century.
