The first part targets the origin of Gypsies. The historical background affecting the social status of Gypsies is defined as well as the attitudes of the majority society to the Gypsy community. In both theoretical and practical terms, the paper targets the interaction of the majority society and the Gypsy minority considering their sociocultural differences. Based on the qualitative research the thesis introduces the objective outcomes reflecting the coexistence of Gypsies and the majority society.
Pentecostalism among Czech and Slovak Roma: The religiosity of Roma and the practices of inclusion of the Roma in the brotherhood in salvation. Autonomy and Conversions among Roma in Márov
Ripka, Štěpán ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Hrustič, Tomáš (referee) ; Ukah, Asonzeh (referee)
The aim of my thesis is to discuss the possible uses of the concept of autonomy in the study of conversions of Roma to Charismatic/Pentecostal Christianity. Focus on empowerment and social inclusion has been prevailing in the field, and critical reflection of questions of governance and oppression is lacking. I use the thesis by Patrick Williams (1987; 1991; 1993a), according to whom the French Gypsies who converted to Pentecostalism achieved autonomy or at least a sense of autonomy, which allowed them to downplay the role of structural factors and other people behind their actions. Through a case study from ethnographic fieldwork in a Romani Charismatic congregation in Western Bohemia I extend and refine the concept. The main theoretical innovations come from the contemporary moral philosophy, especially the theory of autonomy (of the oppressed) by Christman (2014) who defines autonomy as a reflexive affirmation of an assumed practical identity, a "life worth living". The story which missionaries in Márov, the place of my fieldwork, put forward, was that Roma converted from being pimps and drug dealers. The empirical realities and narratives about the change cast doubt on the easy account of radical change through the religion. Based on a detailed focus on conversion of one former drug addict I...
Social problems of city Most from perspective of its young population
Pícha, Tomáš ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Kuchař, Pavel (referee)
This Thesis deals with the social problems of city Most and how they are perceived and evaluated by its young population. Under influence of historical events the city has a very specific composition of the population and it has long been faced with many problems that are inherently social, economic, environmental and other. The Thesis presents the view of pupils and students of Most's schools on these problems and it analyzes which problems students consider as urgency, how they evaluate the living conditions in Most and what is their relationship to the city. The Thesis is supported by own SAQ survey conducted on a sample of approximately 600 students from different types of schools that provides answers to most of the research questions. Given that the Romany question intensively rezonates between young denizens of Most, the survey has been extended to gypsies living in one of Most's Romany localities - well-known settlement Chanov. This enabled the comparison of respondents' opinions (mostly from the rank of the majority) with views of young gypsies. Thus the overall output is consisted of a description of the current situation of the city and its problems, perception of these problems by its young population (majority in comparison with relatively numerous minority of gypsies) and outline of...

The purpose of my thesis is to present the structuring of time of eight Gypsy children aged 11 to 17, living or spending free time at prague's suburb Velká Ohrada. The central goal of this thesis is to identify the Gypsy's child structure of the day and to find out which points of a child's day are defined as crucial by child and by parents and to which event of a day these points refer to. The text is divided into theoretical and empirical part. Theoretical part focuses on pointing out the main aspects of the topic of time. First part also tackles the issue of conceptualization of time as a category itself and as a category, which structures the reality. Question of time is analysed in the context of sociology and psychology. The literature related to the structuring of time of Gypsies is also reflected in the theoretical part of the thesis. The discourse is conducted from a historical perspective and notes that the perception of time was affected by several significant milestones. Empirical part, in addition to the description of objectives, methods, research sample and environment pays particular attention to analysis of its own data of quality- oriented research - the view of Gypsy childern and their parents on how they spend different types of days (e.g. weekday, weekend day, holiday day)....
Ritual Purity and Impurity among the Gypsies
Krčková, Anna ; Řezáčová, Vendula (advisor) ; Martinová, Marta (referee)
In this thesis author deals with theme of the ritual purity and impurity among the Gypsies. Concept of ritual purity and impurity brought to anthropology Mary Douglas. Her approach became important tool to research Gypsy groups. Ritual impurity represents specific irrational quality, which influences social status of the individual or group and social relationships. It creates fundamental border between Gypsies and non-Gypsies and inter-communal hierarchy. Ritual im/purity these borders define clearly, but Gypsies cross and shift them. Within the families, this concept maintains inequality between men and women. Following chapter shows examples that go against mainstream interpretation of im/purity. Ritual purity is being kept by three instruments - Gypsy court, social control and fear of dead souls. Finally author compares Douglas's theory with concrete concept of purity and impurity among Gypsies.

Is Jakub Kováč more employable than Gejza Žiga in the labor market in Eastern Slovakia?
Tóth, Michal ; Svoboda, Miroslav (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This thesis explores discrimination of Gypsies in the labor market in Eastern Slovakia. Using the experimental method I observe the hypothesis about discrimination of this minority in the labor market. The experiment consists of sending fictitious resumes with typical Gypsy and typical Slovak names to job offers in various fields. The results show discrimination against Gypsy minority, when Slovak candidates received 57% more callbacks for an interview. The highest rate of discrimination was in the waitstaff jobs, where employees regulary come into the contact with customers. Using an econometric model I estimated, that the chances of a job candidate for an interview invitation are about 19% lower if his resume contains typical Gypsy name. Afterwards I sent a questionnaire examining attitudes and opinions of employers on discrimination against gypsies to 190 companies in Košice and Prešov Region. Of the 70 replies in 2 cases the company representative admitted, that Gypsy name in the resume disqualifies this applicant.
