Spatial activity and diet of Rousettus aegyptiacus in Cyprus: Does conservation of the only European fruit bat depend on supporting alien plants?
Lučan, R. K. ; Bartonička, T. ; Čížek, Martin ; Jedlička, Petr ; Řeřucha, Šimon ; Šálek, M. ; Nicolaou, H. ; Horáček, I.
During the recent decade the Cypriot population of the Egyptian fruit bats, the only European megabat, dramatically decreased and active conservation management is urgently needed. However, quite a limited information is available on details of its life history and ecology. Our study focused on spatial activity and food habits of three nearby colonies of fruitbats in mid summer and late winter when food supply is supposed to be particularly limited. Using radio-tracking techniques (both manual and automatic), we investigated spatial activity and food habits of 43 fruitbats (summer: 8 females, 11 males; winter: 9 females, 15 males).
BAARA Biological AutomAted RAdiotelemetry system: New technology in ecological field studies
Jedlička, Petr ; Čížek, Martin ; Řeřucha, Š. ; Bartonička, T.
Radiotelemetry became an important and often the only possible method to explore specific habits and behaviour of animals, but it has proven to be very demanding and time consuming especially when frequent positioning is required. Our aim was to address this issue by making the process partially automated in order to mitigate the demands and related costs. We have designed and developed new telemetry system called BAARA (Biological AutomAted RAdiotelemetry system).
Use of electronics product definition for the development of differentially pumped chamber
Maxa, J. ; Neděla, Vilém
Environmental scanning electron microscope creates new possibilities in the field of examination various types of specimens and their phases. The article analyses 3nd compares the results of air pumping measurement for selected shapes of the differentially pumped chamber to create vacuum, using the Cosmos FloWorks system.
Geometrochemistry vs Soft Computing of Mendeleev's Brain
Gottvald, Aleš
The role of projective geometry in nature remains somewhat enigmatic for centuries. It is very strange indeed, as the projective geometry is the mother of all geometries with more restrictive symmetry groups, as clearly recognized yet by seminal insights of Felix Klein, Arthur Cayley, Paul Dirac and other eminent scientists. We usually imagine that Euclidean geometry is primary for the geometrization of our (nonrelativistic) spaces, and the Euclidean-Pythagorean metric is natural for measuring the distances in such a space. However, how to measure distances in spaces associated with statistical thermodynamics or quantum mechanics? We show that projective geometry and associated "geometrochemistry" is manifest in nature. In particular, it offers a novel soft-computing rationale for recovering basic structure of Mendeleev's periodic table of chemical elements, and elucidates some mysteries of brain information processing, including a new understanding of Artificial Neural Networks.
Problems of "in situ" specimen observation in ESEM
Jirák, J. ; Runštuk, Jiří ; Špinka, J.
A system allowing observation of agressive specimens structure in ESEM is described in this contribution. The system is based on the placement of the specimen in a special vessel that is separately vacuum pumped.
Synthesis of carbon nanotubes in mw plasma torch with different methods of catalyst layer preparation and their applications
Zajíčková, L. ; Jašek, O. ; Synek, P. ; Eliáš, M. ; Kudrle, V. ; Kadlečíková, M. ; Breza, J. ; Hanzlíková, Renáta
The microwave plasma torch (2 45 GHz) was used for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes from the mixture of CH4/H-2/Ar or C2H2/H-2/Ar on different substrates with iron catalyst Iron catalyst was prepared by vacuum evaporation of iron on Si, Si/SiOx or Si/AlxO(Y) substrates or by deposition of iron oxide nanoparticles on Si/SiOx substrate by decomposion of Fe(CO)(5) in gas feed Such prepared substrates were used for growth of carbon nanotubes. Recostruction of the iron catalyst layer into nanoparticles was also studied in dependence on substrate buffer layer, gas atmosphere and temperature Samples were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Synthesis resulted in rapid growth of MWNTs on all samples but the density, purity and nanotube diameter distribution varied Such prepared carbon nanotube layers were used for sensing applications.

Interference coatings on laser amplifiers
Oulehla, Jindřich
This contribution deals with the technology used for designing and producing interference coatings on materials used for manufacturing laser amplifiers. These coatings must not only meet the optical performance requirements but also others. For example they must be able to withstand cryogenic cooling, high laser beam fluence, etc.
