Azawad: history and causes of an attempt to declare independent statehood
Čepičková, Lucie ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
This bachelor thesis "Azawad: history, causes of an attempt to declare independent statehood", analyses conflict in Mali, the roots of which go back to precolonial period. The aim of the first part is to describe the historical development of Mali and highlight situations that preceded the conflict between the Tuaregs and the Malian government which led to the attempt to declare an independent state of Azawad in 2013. However, geography of the territory of Mali played a great role, as evidenced Jeffrey Herbst's theory, which highlights the size of the state, population distribution and density of infrastructure. The second part is focused primarily on this theory and applies it to the area of Mali, which answers the question of whether Azawad would be a viable region purely in terms of geographical territory.
Conceptualization of the Use of International Media as an Early Warning System Tool on the Case of Mali
Kopečný, Tomáš ; Hynek, Nikola (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
This thesis deals with the topic of Early Warning Systems (EWS), a key part of conflict prevention. It applies a model of content analysis of international media outputs on the case of the Mali insurgency in January 2012. As an EWS tool, it analyzes international media represented by major global press agencies. The main goal of the thesis is to answer the following research question: Are international media a suitable tool for EWS by showing that their analysis could have predicted the outbreak of the conflict in Mali in January 2012? The answer should also show whether international media can detect growing tensions leading to a conflict as well as test the plausibility of the EWS model. The application of the model should, observing the period from August 2011 to the beginning of the insurgency on January 17, 2012, prove whether the conflict could have been anticipated. In order to contextualize the model, structural factors of instability were identified in the discussion of the dynamics of the conflict that has been repeating itself for dozens of years. A discourse analysis of international media during the observed period was also presented on the background of the securitization theory of the Copenhagen school of security studies. The discourse analysis and the quantitative EWS model have...

It applies a model of quantitative analysis of international media outputs on the case of the Mali insurgency in January 2012. As an EWS tool, it analyzes international media represented by the major global press agencies. The main goal of the thesis is to answer the following research question: Did the international media manage to anticipate the outbreak of the conflict in Mali? The answer should also show whether international media can detect growing tensions leading to a conflict and therefore whether they could be used as an EWS tool. The discourse analysis and the quantitative EWS model have both shown that international media have not...
The Impact of Having Siblings on Early Female Marriage: Evidence from Mali and Sierra Leone
Merglová, Eva ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (advisor) ; Kocourková, Jiřina (referee)
The Impact of Having Siblings on Early Female Marriage: Evidence from Mali and Sierra Leone Abstract Early female marriage is perceived as a persisting problem of many less-developed countries, that brings various negative consequences not only for girls but also for the society as a whole. The main objective of this bachelor thesis is to contribute to the research on possible risk factors of this traditional practice. Specifically, it investigates whether and how the number of siblings affects the probability of a girl getting married or entering into cohabiting union before her 18th birthday. Parental incentives underpinning early female marriage are discussed mainly in relation to the theory of intra-household resource allocation and sibling rivalry. Special attention is paid to the impact of sibling age structure on household decision-making process about daughters' marriage timing. Consequently, an empirical test is conducted for two West African countries, Mali and Sierra Leone, using data from the latest available Demographic and Health Surveys. Based on the empirical analysis of this data, there is no evidence that the total number of siblings or their age structure has any significant impact on the probability of a girl getting married or entering into union early in the countries under study.

Alternative scenarios of future development of the Mali crisis
Hankeová, Tereza ; Kváča, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kochan, Jan (referee)
As history is focused on the past and sociology deals with the present, shouldn't be international relations oriented towards the future? On the concrete example of Mali crisis are demonstrated the advantages of the scenario building method, which enhances the relevance of theories of international relations. Northern Mali has been traditionally isolated geographically, politically and economically. Since the beginning of 2012, fights broke out again. The rising threat of Islamist groups was confirmed in the Sahel. This thesis primarily deals with the potential evolution of the Malian crisis, which has been caused by a complex set of interactions. The analysis of events preceding the crisis enables to define driving factors, which will continue to influence the crisis in the future. In addition are defined key uncertainties that could substantially reverse its predictable evolution. Four scenarios outlining alternative future development in northern Mali will be constructed in accordance with a chosen new scenario building method. They differ from each other by varied interactions between key actors and key unknowns and by their temporal and spatial dynamics.
