Ovlivnění buněčné direrenciace u nádorových buněk analýzou exprese proteinu Serca3 jako markeru diferenciace
Šerá, Pavlína ; Pávek, Petr (advisor) ; Šimůnek, Tomáš (referee)
In the present work we investigated the process of cellular differentiation induced by histone deacetylase inhibitors in cell lines derived from various types of non- small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Our objective was to study the cross-talk between the process of cellular differentiation and expression of Sarco-Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium ATPases (SERCA proteins), enzymes that transport calcium from cytosol to the endoplasmic reticulum. Various lung cancer cell lines were grown in vitro, subjected to treatments by various short chain fatty acid-derived histone desacetylase inhibitors, and SERCA expression was determined in a semi-quantitative Western blot format using the IID8 and PLIM430 anti-SERCA monoclonal antibodies that recognise SERCA2 and SERCA3, respectively. Our experiments show that the expression of SERCA proteins and cellular differentiation are interconnected in all lung studied cancer cell lines (A549, Calu-3, ChaGoK-1, NCI-H292 and NCI-H460). In particular, the induction of the expression of SERCA3 protein was observed after the induction of cellular differentiation by histone deacetylase inhibitors such as sodium butyrate, valerate and phenylbutyrate. Induction of SERCA3 expression was specific, because SERCA2 levels were not modified by the treatments. Taken together, our...

Financial Hedonism: American Consumerism and the Financial Crisis
Metzger, Andrew Michael ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
The American character is defined by a bigger, higher, faster mindset. Throughout its history, this has been the United States' great strength. In the 20th century, the bigger-higher-faster mentality produced a parade of American successes, attracting talented immigrants from across the globe and spurring a century of unparalleled invention and ingenuity. Two generations ago, bigger-higher faster stood for innovation: the jet airplane, the towering and beautiful skyscraper, or the efficiency of the assembly-line automobile. In today's America, defined by its consumeristic excess, biggerhigher- faster means bigger houses, higher debt, and faster gratification. The bigger-higher-faster mentality that has always defined America has cross-pollinated with another strain of Americana-consumerism-to calamitous results. The global financial crisis stands as example one of the disastrous results of Americans'consumeristic excess. While popular lore holds that the financial crisis is the product of greedy Wall Street bankers, avaricious speculators, and mendacious mortgage brokers, the primary perpetrator is the average American who lusted after a house far beyond his means, furnished it with fixings he could not afford, and paid for everything using easily available credit. For nearly a decade, banks gave platinum...

Esaays on Corporate Bankruptcy

Research Journal Articles Working Papers Research in Brief Series Dissertations Other Publications Featured Article Dissertations Date: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 - 10:30 Ondřej Vychodil: "Essays on Corporate Bankruptcy" Dissertation Committee: Gérard Roland (chair) Libor Dušek (local chair) Evžen Kočenda Jan Hanousek Abstract: The dissertation consists of three chapters on corporate bankruptcy: In the first chapter (joint with Ondřej Knot), we develop a model of a debt-contracting problem under bankruptcy regimes differing by a degree of softness. In the model, the degree of softness is associated with the extent to which the absolute priority rule can be violated. We show that when the degree of softness can be set individually for each project, then the debtor's tendency to excessive risk-taking can be eliminated and the first best solution can be attained. When it is given exogenously by a bankruptcy law, then a completely tough law results in a lower distortion from the first best than a soft law with a moderate degree of softness. The second chapter documents that the recent Czech bankruptcy practice tended to delay the ultimate exit of a firm when it can be expected to have a harsher ex-post effect on the firm's employees. Bankruptcy duration is regressed on unemployment rate, size and other...

Companies in private international law
Daňková, Zuzana ; Pauknerová, Monika (advisor) ; Kučera, Zdeněk (referee)
Private International Law - Companies Abstract: Comparative company law is about taking in the experience of others in a competitive way, and finding a joint solution to the cross-border issues appearing for and from companies that are confronted by global competition. All over the world company law is undergoing fundamental change, particularly in Europe. European countries have committed themselves to and begun extensive reform of their company legislation. In this paper I argue the reasons for such a movement. The harmonization of national company laws was long the main concern of the European Union. An increasing EU harmonization was taking place through the Company Law Directives, designed mostly to protect stakeholders such as minority shareholders, creditors and employees, and was motivated by the desire to establish a situation in which every competing business from different Member States has a fair and equal chance of succeeding and to prevent Member States from participating in a 'race to the bottom' as a means to attract investment. Therefore, mobility of companies was not a priority for the EC at that time. However, this became different with the adoption of the European Company Statute. This regulation is the first European law which enables a cross-border merger as well as the transfer of the...

The thesis combines general psychology, individual psychology, cross-cultural psychology and behavioral geography. The author applies knowledge of psychology disciplines to the research of creation and forming of mental maps of residential desirability, place perception discovering and exploring knowledge about alternate destination for long term or permanent residency. It searches for relations between character profile according to Big Five personality traits - resilient, overcontrolled, undercontrolled and migrational and adaptive propensity. This thesis consist of two blocks, first part is dedicated to theroretical issues about psychological background of migration and adaptative process. Main topics are: personality theory and its application to migrants personality, theory of motivation within context of international migration, job of psyche and its influence on creation and forming of mental maps of residential desirability in perspective of international migration, process of adaptation,...

Social Work as the Consequence of a Christian Attitude
HEJZLAROVÁ, Noemi
This Bachelor´s thesis looks first at the subject of helping the needy in the Holy Scriptures. It presents faith as the base for Christian assistence to the needy. The source of strength for this work is God?s love, which gives worth to every human being. Since God loves man, and proved this love on the cross, man can love both himself and those around him. Through assistence to the needy, the world can have a taste of God?s love. Service to our neighbors is also service to God, who identifies Himself with the needy. The thesis describes helping the needy as an inseparable component of the Church, and as a criterion of true faith. It then compares the approaches of the Baptist Union, the Evangelical Brethren Church, and of the Roman Catholic Church, with regards to helping the needy, based on selected church documents.

Ramsey-type results for ordered hypergraphs
Balko, Martin ; Valtr, Pavel (advisor) ; Conlon, David (referee) ; Nešetřil, Jaroslav (referee)
Ramsey-type results for ordered hypergraphs Martin Balko Abstract We introduce ordered Ramsey numbers, which are an analogue of Ramsey numbers for graphs with a linear ordering on their vertices. We study the growth rate of ordered Ramsey numbers of ordered graphs with respect to the number of vertices. We find ordered match- ings whose ordered Ramsey numbers grow superpolynomially. We show that ordered Ramsey numbers of ordered graphs with bounded degeneracy and interval chromatic number are at most polynomial. We prove that ordered Ramsey numbers are at most polynomial for ordered graphs with bounded bandwidth. We find 3-regular graphs that have superlinear ordered Ramsey numbers, regardless of the ordering. The last two results solve problems of Conlon, Fox, Lee, and Sudakov. We derive the exact formula for ordered Ramsey numbers of mono- tone cycles and use it to obtain the exact formula for geometric Ramsey numbers of cycles that were introduced by Károlyi et al. We refute a conjecture of Peters and Szekeres about a strengthening of the fa- mous Erd˝os-Szekeres conjecture to ordered hypergraphs. We obtain the exact formula for the minimum number of crossings in simple x-monotone drawings of complete graphs and provide a combinatorial characterization of these drawings in terms of colorings of ordered...

A Style Checker for Czech
Doležalová, Drahomíra
We have studied selected stylistic and grammatic problems of Czech (e. g. attraction, degrees of comparison, compound adverbs, conjunction nebo meaning determination, crossing of government, vocalization of prepositions). Theoretical part of our work consists of (mostly original) detailed analyses of all the phenomena studied; these analyses focus on the possibilities of the formal description of the phenonema and their automatic detection. We consider the results connected with an analysis of attraction the most valuable asset of this part. The implementation part of the work contains several rules written in the Language for grammatical Rules - LanGR. They are able to find some problematic constructions in morphologically annotated (in principle condisambiguated) text. We performed tests on the Prague Dependency Tree corpus (PDT) (1 500 000 manually disambiguated words), where we succeeded in finding 59 style mistakes keeping absolute precision. The implementation contains also a Perl script for vocalization of prepositions in Czech.

The research on pupil's conception of grammatical problems on the second degree of primary school
DVOŘÁKOVÁ, Jana
This Diploma Thesis is concerned with the research on pupils? conception of orthographical questions, importance and relevance to grammatical phenomena and grammatical correctness in current communication used by pupils in secondary schools. The Thesis is divided into three parts. The theoretical part deals with the definition of term ?orthography?, orthographical principles and functions, the importance of orthography and its types. There is also a section in the theoretical part which is concerned with the main tendencies and the newest approaches to orthography in secondary schools. In this part attention is focused on history of orthography, orthographical limitations and analysis of mistakes in current school, further the influence of computer on spelling and its educational usage, types of orthographical exercises, its correction and marking. It also contains a cross-section of orthographical questions in the Slovak Republic and foreigners? spelling problems. The practical part deals with the analysis of theoretical curriculum converted into practical tasks. There are also the most frequent mistakes and pupils? attitude to orthography education in this part, which we got on the basis of questionnaire evaluation. In the third part, which is also practical, there are some methods for pupils? motivation which should help to raise the efficiency of orthography education in secondary schools.
