TITLE: Communication in Girls with Rett Syndrome AUTHOR: Zdeňka Sobotová DEPARTMENT: Department of Special Education SUPERVISOR: doc. PaedDr. Jiřina Klenková, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the communication in girls with Rett syndrome. Rett syndrome is a severe neurological disorder leading to multiple disabilities and severely impaired communication skills. The aim of the thesis is to describe the communication skills of girls with Rett Syndrome, the role of parents in the development of communication and the possibilities for communication intervention. This issue is presented on case histories of three girls with Rett Syndrome of various ages, acquired from semi-structured interviews with parents or caregivers of girls and participative observation of girls' behaviors and their interaction with the environment. The research results in the description of motor and communication skills and methods used to develop communication with the three girls with Rett Syndrome. Research shows that even though the communication capabilities of girls with Rett Syndrome are very individual, parents are looking for ways to develop the communication skills of their daughters and they expect the professional advice from special educators, which they, in their opinion gets poorly. Pupil with communication disorders in preparatory class

The bachelor thesis "Pupils with Communication Disorders in Preparatory Classes" analyses the issues of preparatory classes. It develops the competences of school readiness and preparedness. The thesis summarizes the speech development as a basis for the diagnosis of communication disorders. It declares the positive effects of preparatory classes on the development of communication skills of children with postponed school entry in the region of Prague 9. The thesis proves the need to include children with communication disorders into preparatory classes. It offers the possibility to the parents of children attending preparatory classes to express their opinions on the functioning of these classes. It informs parents of preschool children in the region of Prague-East about the existence of preparatory classes and it monitors the level of parents' awareness. A mixed-method research is applied in the study. It combines a quantitative method - a questionnaire - and qualitative methods - structured dialogues and case studies. In the conclusion of the thesis practical recommendations are offered: amendment of the Education Act and the implementation of school-readiness testing at the beginning and at the end of the school year. Comparison of different language levels at preschool age and their mutual penetration

The main aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to analyse the development of particular language levels in preschool children. The theoretical part deals with the psychomotor development, communication, impaired communication ability and development of communication skills in children during preschool education. It describes the possibilities of influencing the speech development in this stage and providing logopedic intervention. The empiric part of the Bachelor's thesis deals with comparing differences in grades of particular language levels in children at the age of 4 - 5 years and subsequently at the age of 5 - 6 (7) years before their entrance to school. On the basis of comparison and research investigation of a sample of 10 children in an ordinary kindergarten during a year period, it describes the most common deficiencies in partial areas of the particular language levels. According to the results of this investigation it brings in a few suggestions for pedagogical practice.
Usage of alternative and augmentative systems of communication within logopedic intervention of individuals with combined disabilities

The dissertation provides a detailed analysis of logopedic intervention. It focuses on systems of alternative and augmentative communication of individuals with special learning and educational needs (combined disability) in different age (19,12, 8 years). Theoretical part presents firstly general characteristics of communicational skills as a part of communication process and their possible violation with regards to respondent's combined disabilities and secondly researcher's own logopedic intervention. The work shows a shift within theoretical approaches from sound aspects of speech to its content. Combined disability is described from the perspective of frequent combination of celebral palsy and mental disorder. Symptomatology and diagnosis are also included. Last chapter profiles individual systems of alternative and augmentative communication as well as criteria used in the process of their choice. Own research focuses on detailed overview of logopedic intervention within each developmental stage of the respondents. Methods of therapy for developmental dysphasia

The work is mainly focused on the issues of developmental dysphasia and its therapy. The first part describes the development of human speech, then ontogenetic development of man, communication ability and impaired speech development. A separate chapter is devoted to developmental dysphasia, its etiology, symptomatology, and then the therapy. The second part focuses on establishing a therapeutic material, where tasks are compiled according to the individual needs of the reference boys with developmental dysphasia.
