Comparison of the media image of prosecutors G. Falcone and P. Borsellino in Italian press before and after the year 1992
Šauerová, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Hájek, Roman (referee)
The topic of Mafia and the fight against it has always been very closely followed by media. The content of the news does not, however, always reflect the truth; sometimes we can even see an inclination to subjectivity and bias. On the example of Italian prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, it is shown how the media formed the medial image of people who were particularly engaged in fighting the organised crime. Falcone and Borsellino were two Sicilian prosecutors who made a significant contribution in fight against the Mafia in the 1980s and 1990s. The medial image of both prosecutors was changing over time. The goal of this thesis is to compare the medial image of both prosecutors created by two Italian daily newspapers before and after 1992 (the year of the assassination of the prosecutors) and to asses the eventual differences in the approach of these periodicals. Qualitative analysis of selected regional and national newspapers shows that before the assassinations in 1992, Falcone and Borsellino were criticized and attacked, on the other hand, after 1992, a heroization process occurred. The medial content of both periodicals have been compared and specific topics covered by each of them have been identified.

Šámal, Pavel ; Buben, Radek (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
This final thesis attempts to provide a closer ovierview of specific features of the Italian political arena, which is a mutual penetration of one sphere of organized crime - mafia and politics. The first part of this thesis defines the theoretical structure of the mafia phenomenon and essays to contextualize it within organized crime. The second part begins with an excoursion into the history of the mafia in Sicily from its beginings in the 19th century until the 1970s. The deeper analysis is then devoted to the crucial period of the 1980s and 1990s. The final part of the thesis examines the period of bomb attacks (1992-1993) through the aspect of new investigations. Key words: mafia, Cosa Nostra, politics, Italy, Palermo, organized crime.
Image of mafia in Leonardo Sciascia's works
Bubela, Petr ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
The aim of my thesis is an analysis of the literary image of mafia in Leonardo Sciascia's works from the 60th and 70th of the 20th century. The literary techniques are documented using the examples of the concrete parts of the text in which the mafia operates. At the same time I give an account of the way Sciascia applies the genre rules of the detective story. The subjects of study represent four novels (The Day of the Owl, To Each His Own, Context and One Way or Another) together with one drama L'onorevole. The above mentioned works have been interpreted and analyzed in terms of the structure, genre and language used while the findings of other scholars focused on Sciascia's work have been taken into account of as well. Mafia constitutes one of the key motifs in the work of Leonardo Sciascia. His reoccurring interest stemmed from the fact that he was well acquainted with the phenomenon, partly due to his personal experience and partly due to his intensive study of the matter. Nevertheless he refused to attribute the existence of the mafia solely to Sicily. In his perception, mafia was only one manifestation of Power on which he critically reflected all his life. Sciascia perceived mafia as a result of the social conditions and as an integral part of the power system of Sicily, or consequently the...
Critical Aspects of the Italian Debt
Černohorský, David ; Němcová, Ingeborg (advisor) ; Neumann, Pavel (referee)
The work examines the hypothesis that the Italian debt has already reached its critical level and the creditors no longer trust the country. I concluded that it's far from having reached its critical level. Despite the rising debt and internal problems, Italy borrows more cheaply than before and thanks to economic growth and some reforms we can expect this trend to continue. On the other hand, the country still has major structural problems and struggles with high unemployment and declining competitiveness. In the case of failure to introduce necessary reforms, in a longer-term can Italy suffer by significant problems.
The Phenomenon of Italian Mafia and the Possibility of its Elimination
Müllerová, Aneta ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Soběhart, Radek (referee)
My thesis 'The Phenomenon of Italian Mafia and the Possibility of its Elimination' focuses on the permanent existence of the Mafia in Italy without major success in the fight against its illegal activities. Firstly, I will explore the origin and development of the Mafia and factors pertaining to why it wasn't recognized exclusively as a criminal organization before the late 20th century; a view shaped by a cultural-historical and linguistic analysis of this ever-powerful institution. Following this, I will address specific strategies used in the fight against the Mafia to support the hypothesis that cooperation between its penitent former members and the judiciary, in conjunction with the existence of effective legislative measures, is a decisive and effective method for the possible destruction of the Mafia.

Dualism in Italy
Báčová, Pavla ; Písař, Pavel (advisor) ; Stočková, Olga (referee)
The main purpose of my bachelor thesis will be to confirm the backwardness of Southern Italy in comparison with the north of Italy by use of macroeconomic indicators which are mainly published by ISTAT and other organizations. Furthermore, I will try to confirm the fact that the backwardness of the south of Italy is largely caused by the influence of Mafia - would Southern Italy be an equal partner of the north or would it possibly be more prosperous in the absence of Mafia? This analysis will be complemented by the actual steps taken by the Italian government and various southern Italian regions carried out to improve the current situation. Further, I will propose my own procedures of how to fight this extraordinary phenomenon or at least, how to find a way to reduce it. In the next part, I shall discuss the progressive development and causes of dualism in the north and south of Italy, by means of which I will, after a more thorough examination, try to sketch an idea of why Italy is, despite being a unified country, continually split into two completely different regions.
The maffia and its influence on the economy of Italy
Müllerová, Aneta ; Písař, Pavel (advisor) ; Doležalová, Antonie (referee)
Blacher paper targets at illegal activities of maffia and their influence on the economy of South Italy. For understanding today's mafia it is important to know its hystory. That is why theoretic part focuses on reason of its origin, its evolution, its way of organization and its rules, which are followed by all members. Another part of blacher paper intruduces methods and competitive advantages which mafia uses to strenghten its status on market. In the practical part I analyze the Italian market, which has been deformed by maffia. Its presence is indicated as one of the reasons of underdevelopment of southern Italy. The analyse will be realized with qualitative analysis (based on italian legislativ and paper) and by quantitative analysis (based on different statistics)
