The effect of floods on the ichthyofauna of Štěpánovský stream
Čech, Martin ; Čech, P.
The effect of floods on the ichthyofauna of Štěpánovský stream (left-hand affluent of Sázava River, aver. summer flow rate 0.2 m3s-1) was studied using diet analysis of kingfisher A. atthis preying exclusively on local fish community. The first local flood event (2 August 2001; flow rate 100 m3s-1) caused drastic shift in the ichthyofauna composition from original fish community dominated by brown trout S. trutta, brook trout S. fontinalis and bullhead C. gobio to fish community dominated by bleak A. alburnus, roach R. rutilus, chub L. cephalus and gudgeon G. gobio. The second flood event (all Czech Republic floods in August 2002; flow rate 4 m3s-1) was surprisingly much less destructive to fish fauna. Consequently, the stream played also the role of refuge for many new fish species including juveniles of nase C. nasus, vimba bream V. vimba, barbel B. barbus, asp A. aspius and sunbleak L. delineatus, from highly flooded Sázava River.
Great floods in the Ostrava region in 1902 and 1903
Munzar, Jan ; Ondráček, Stanislav
The region of Ostrava cannot be thought of without floods as there are several water courses flowing together on the Ostrava Basin bottom: Odra (Oder) R. and its tributaries Opava and Ostravice. Their confluence is one of the most important hydrological junctions in the Czech Republic. Observations on the Odra River in Bohumín indicate that the most severe flood disasters experienced by the region in the 20th century were floods occurring in July 1997 and in July 1903. Less known is the fact, however, that only a year before the extreme from the beginning of the last century, in June 1902, there were also irregular floods occurring in the Ostrava region, whose impact was even more severe on some water courses, namely on the Ostravice River, than in 1903. This earlier June flood apparently resulted in a lot more damage in the Ostrava industrial agglomeration than the case that happened one year later. Regarding the fact that the time gap between the big floods from the beginning of the 20th century and the recent flood event of 1997 is nearly 100 years, the two old disasters have been forgotten which is considered a loss of historical memory in the region.
Experimentální výzkum spolehlivosti těsnění kabelových prostupů v Pražském metru po povodních v létě 2002
Jíra, J. ; Jírová, Jitka ; Bouška, P. ; Vokáč, M.
Confluence of the rivers Berounka and Sázava and outflows from the Vltava dam cascade caused the flow in the lower part of the river Vltava in Prague. The Vltava culminated in Prague on 14 August with a flow of 5160 m3.s-1; this corresponds to a period of recurrence of 500 years. The extension of floods in the Vltava valley in Prague caused penetration of water into underground spaces of the Metro and water flooded 19 of 53 underground stations. Looseness of cable bushings through pressure interfaces and non-closure of some pressure interfaces were the most important cause of spreading of water in underground spaces. After the floods of August 2002 the accredited laboratory CTU in Prague, Klokner Institute designed a methodology of experiments and testing system and performed tests on reliability of cable bushings and on material properties of the U 5000. Results of experiments lead to the recommendation to replace all the existing cable bushing in Prague Metro

Holíková, Veronika ; Toth, Petr (advisor) ; Melichárek, Josef (referee)
This bachelor work deals with the phenomenon of the public gatherings of money as one possible source of financing the damages caused by floods. The aim was to answer these questions: why today's society still needs a public gathering, in what may the non-profit sector "compete" with the public sector, and what are the pros and cons of financing flood damages by the public gatherings. There were compared particularly the quickness of reaction and the amount of financial aid of the public and nonprofit sectors. The basis for the answers consists of results of the research, held among the subjects, involved in organizing the gatherings after the floods of 2002. For subsequent data processing was used a special methodology, developed for this purpose of public gatherings, built on existing methods of evaluating the performance of nonprofit organizations.
