K regionu Ostravska vždy neodmyslitelně patřily a patří povodně, neboť zde, na dně Ostravské pánve, se stéká několik vodních toků: Odra a její přítoky Opava a Ostravice. Jejich soutok představuje jeden z nejvýznamnějších hydrologických uzlů v České republice. Podle pozorování na řece Odře v Bohumíně postihly tento kraj ve 20.století největší povodňové katastrofy v červenci 1997 a v červenci 1903. Méně je známo, že o pouhý rok před tímto extrémem z počátku minulého století, v červnu 1902, se na Ostravsku vyskytly rovněž mimořádné povodně. Na některých vodních tocích, zejména na Ostravici, byly dokonce větší než v roce 1903. A tato červnová povodeň zřejmě způsobila v ostravské průmyslové aglomeraci více škod, než případ rok poté. Vzhledem k tomu, že mezi velkými povodněmi z počátku 20.století a aktuálním případem z roku 1997 uplynulo téměř 100 let, projevila se v tomto regionu ztráta historické paměti – na obě tyto staré katastrofy se již zapomnělo. The region of Ostrava cannot be thought of without floods as there are several water courses flowing together on the Ostrava Basin bottom: Odra (Oder) R. and its tributaries Opava and Ostravice. Their confluence is one of the most important hydrological junctions in the Czech Republic. Observations on the Odra River in Bohumín indicate that the most severe flood disasters experienced by the region in the 20th century were floods occurring in July 1997 and in July 1903. Less known is the fact, however, that only a year before the extreme from the beginning of the last century, in June 1902, there were also irregular floods occurring in the Ostrava region, whose impact was even more severe on some water courses, namely on the Ostravice River, than in 1903. This earlier June flood apparently resulted in a lot more damage in the Ostrava industrial agglomeration than the case that happened one year later. Regarding the fact that the time gap between the big floods from the beginning of the 20th century and the recent flood event of 1997 is nearly 100 years, the two old disasters have been forgotten which is considered a loss of historical memory in the region.
