Analysis of September 11, 2001 terrorist attact impacts on the United Kingdom foreign policy

Main theme of submitted thesis is the analysis of the impact of terroristic attacks 9/11 on the foreign policy of the United Kingdom. The impact is evaluated in three fields. The first one is the "special telationship" with the United States and how it changed with the accession of the prezident George W. Bush and followinf "war on terror". The second area of focus is the relationship of the UK with the rest of continental Europe. The last one is the so called ethical dimension of New Labour's foreign policy and the intervencionism. The events of 9/11testified the importance of foreign policy even for the Great Britain, in that time embodied in the figure of prime minister Tony Blair. Tony Blair is certainly one of the most influential politics in British history since Second World War. His worldviews and ideas shaped the direction of British foreign policy. Blair lived with notion of his country serving as an imaginary bridge connecting both the Europe and the USA. However the later geopolitical development prove this idea unreal. The main reason was the Iraq. The invasion also showed that the special relationship between the UK and the USA does not exist anymore and that Britain has to search for a new place in the post-cold war world.

The Anglo-American "Special Relationship" in the Period of Gordon Brown's Government: the Case Study of Finding Solutions to Financial Crisis

The central theme of the bachelor thesis is the phenomenon of the "special relationship" between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America. The "special relationship" that is most often associated with cooperation in military and security, is applied on the field of economic diplomacy during the time of financial crisis and finding a solution to it. At first, the thesis argued whether it was possible to claim the "special relationship" in economic cooperation. Then it continued to argue, to what extend could the "special relationship" influence crisis-solution finding. Thesis used the examples of economic diplomacy before and during G20 leaders' summits as the most obvious manifestation of the role of the "special relationship". Another focus of the thesis is the period of Gordon Brown's government. Besides summarizing the events leading to finding crisis solution, thesis also describes the main events that happened and shaped the evolution of the "special relationship" during the period of Gordon Brown's government. Most of the thesis is, however, centered on the role of Brown and Anglo-American diplomacy in finding solution to financial crisis.

The Strategic Defence Initiative Program (SDI) in the Context of the British-American Relationship

The bachelor thesis The Strategic Defence Initiative Program (SDI) in the Context of the British-American Relationship analyses the British view on the strategic defense programme, which was proclaimed in March 1983. It aims to find out whether the development of SDI meant a breaking point for the British- American Relationship, or it merely served as an opportunity to realize the possibilities offered by the relation. After a brief characteristic of the "Special Relationship" and its development since World War II, the main focus is put on the era of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and their mutual interactions concerning SDI. It describes the journey from the proclamation of SDI through the signing of the participation agreement with Great Britain to the ending of the Cold War and also the factors that influenced the British attitude during this time. The era of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan is generally viewed as a time of peak intensity of the Special Relationship, the best since the times of World War II.

"Special Relationship" between the United States and the United Kingdom and its Importance in the Context of War on Terror

The 'special relationship' between the United States and the United Kingdom has existed since the beginning of the 1940s. During the Second World War, a strong alliance emerged that was based on a defense policy against a common enemy and a shared value principle. Throughout the Cold War, the special relationship evolved from a weakening of mutual relations in 1960s and 1970s to a renewed rapprochement in 1980s, mainly because of the shared opinions of the U.S. President Ronald Reagan and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. After the geopolitical changes in 1989 a debate developed over the future of their special relationship. The question was whether (or in what form) the transatlantic alliance will continue to remain. The 9/11 terrorist attacks upon the United States gave the answer to this question and provided the impetus for renewed mutual British-American relations. Immediately after the attacks, the United Kingdom expressed its full support for the US-led fight against terrorism and followed the United States first into Afghanistan and later into Iraq. Diploma thesis Special Relationship? British-U.S. Relations, 1979-1990 examines the nature of relations between the United Kingdom and the United States, focusing predominantly on the period of parallel governance of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. The aim is to study both the extent to which the relationship was genuinely special and anticipations both countries connected with it. Providing an overview of the development of the special relationship after the WWII the paper addresses foreign, political, economic and ideological bonds between the countries and their political leaders. It considers not only the basic similarities of domestic and foreign policies, but also tensions and conflicts accompanying this alliance. The paper also describes the influence of the special relationship on the relations with European states and the Soviet Union. The uniqueness of the special relationship is identified in both the nuclear, defence and intelligence cooperation and in the British Prime Minister's and American President's ideological and political comprehension.

The Special Relationship: discourse on UK-US relations in British Press

The MA thesis "The Special Relationship: A discourse on British-American relations in the British press" focuses on a discourse analysis of the "special relationship" in 2001-2010. The thesis is based on a sample of 25 commentaries published in leading British newspapers over this period and describes the characteristic features that appeared in the discourse on the United Kingdom's most important bilateral partnership. The identified elements pertain to national identity, national interest, historical narratives, diplomatic rituals, assessment of the Prime Minister's personal role and the perception of the UK's junior status within the relationship. The thesis uses a Foreign Policy Analysis model that takes into account the role of the media in the formation of foreign policy. Methodologically, selected discourse analysis methods are used, particularly thematic analysis and analysis of metaphors. The characteristic features of the dominant discourse are identified through excerpts from relevant secondary literature on the history of the "special relationship" after WWII and subsequently compared with the results of the newspaper sample analysis. The B.A. thesis "United States and Israel: A Special Relationship?, U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Israel in 1956-73" analyses the development of U.S.-Israeli relationship on the background of the regional development in the Middle East in 1956-73. The thesis focuses mainly on the American-Israeli military cooperation, more particularly on the American arms supply to Israel. It analyses the emergence, development and the intensity of the special relationship between Washington and Jerusalem through the key events of the Arab-Israeli conflict, such as the Suez Crisis, the Six Day War and the Jomkippur War, and other regional crisis in the Middle East. The relationship had a crucial significance for the United States. It helped to stabilize the region, to prevent further soviet influence in this area and thus protect American geostrategic interests.

"Special Relationship" in the Era of Harold Macmillan (1957-1963)

This thesis analyzes key moments from the tenures of Harold Macmillan as British Prime Minister and John Fitzgerald Kennedy as President of the United States. The United Kingdom and the United States had a Special Relationship between them, which was based upon their close political cooperation. Macmillan and Kennedy deepend this relation by their personal friendship, which played a major role in the course of finding solutions to the conflicts they had to face in the context of the Cold War, when there was a real possibility of nuclear annihilation. The analysis shows that the Special Relationship in the years 1957-1963 went through several dynamic developments, however it never lost its unique status. Despite initial distrust between the two countries immediately following the Suez Crisis, both politicians always managed to find a compromise solution. Thanks to their friendship and deep personal respect, they managed to always unite, even during times of gravest peril. A typical example of the personal relationship is the Cuban Missile Crisis, when Kennedy kept in touch via telephone with Macmillan and often asked him for advice.
