Contemporary Hungarian minority in Slovakia and Slovak in Hungary

The thesis presents theoretical approaches to the issue of national minorities and seeks to include two specific cases - Slovakia and Hungary - into this theoretical spectrum. Slovak and Hungarian minorities in Hungary and Slovakia respective are characterized at the same time. Territorial delimitation is obvious, time delimitation is primarily based in the first decade of the new millennium, ending in 2010. Theoretical part of the thesis is divided into two parts - first dealing with national and ethnic minorities (various classifications, terminology and characteristics), second with possible approaches of states to their national minorities (discussed are all conceivable approaches from the least favorable to the friendliest one). The practical part is divided into two main chapters, namely by surveyed countries - Slovakia and Hungary. Both of these chapters deal with national minorities in a given country, with the characteristics of these minorities and their legal status. Analysis of legal statuses of these minorities is based on international treaties, constitutions and laws of both countries. Transformation of Latvia - coexistence with the Russian minority

The subject of this thesis is a detailed mapping transformation Baltic States after 1991, and their coexistence with the Russian minority in Latvia. The work seeks to analyze and describe the specific case situation that took place after 1991. The work deals with the development of Latvia, the Russian minority status and the introduction of controversial laws on citizenship. Tries to find answers to questions about what led Latvia to the strict laws on citizenship. The work shows, that the main reason is the big Russian minority in these countries, which is considered like a threat to the political independence of the Baltic states. The first part is focused on the characteristics of minorities, showing different perspectives on the history and mapping of the Baltic States. The second part details the progress, that affect a very strained relationship between Latvians and the Russian minority, which led to the introduction of strict rules for obtaining citizenship in Latvia.

Multiculturalism in Russia : Muslim population case study

Many researchers say that the multiculturalism in Russia has emerged recently, but this term started to dеvеlop few dеcades ago. During this time period we have seen its significant change and improvement. Russian sociеty culturally is very divеrse. There are many different nаtions, culturеs, religions, and even civilizations living in Russia. The uniqueness of Russia consists in the fact that those different culturеs are its indigenous people. There is probably no other stаte in the world with such a high number of different culturеs living together relatively peacefully for centuries. Also, culturally diverse population of Russia is not composed of migrаnts as in the case of Europe or the USA. For this purpose the beginning of the thesis is dedicated to understanding of the term multiculturalism, cultural diversity, minority groups and similar. Multiculturalism developed significantly especially in the phase of last events which took place in the Wеst. The 9/11 has brought several changes. Also, the latest incidents (and the speeches of the several lеadеrs) in Europe have shown Europeans and the rest of the world that the situation in immigrаnt welcoming rеgions is not positive as before. The Kurdish Minority in Turkey: Problems and Perspectives

The treatment of minorities by different states gains scholarly attention in the recent years. This thesis attempts to define the necessary criteria for a state to have in order for its treatment of minorities to be acceptable by the international society. There are three major parts of the thesis. It starts with a thorough investigation of legal dimension of minority rights. The thesis formulates the criteria that a state should meet in the field of national and international law regarding minority rights. The second part investigates the political dimension of the issue. The analysis of political dimension describes the interaction of governments with minorities and the factors influencing the success of minorities in achieving their demands. In the final part of the thesis, the criteria formulated in legal and political dimensions are applied to the case of the Kurdish minority in Turkey. The position of Kurdish minority in the society is unique because of the Turkish state's assimilationist policies towards ethnic minorities till very recent years. The minority rights defined by international society were, therefore, not recognized in Turkey. However, the situation has recently changed. The current government ruled by Justice and Development Party has applied numerous democratization reforms that normalize the position of minorities. The Kurdish minority is not discriminated against as much as it was in the past. In addition to the analysis of the current state of minority rights in Turkey, the thesis proposes opportunities for improvement in the future.

Activism of the LGBT community in the Czech Republic

The main subject of this thesis is the activism of the LGBT community in the Czech Republic after 1989. The first goal is to analyse the living conditions of homosexuals in the Czech Republic, the possibilities for achieving greater rights, and the forms of activism which have helped to lead to the current situation. The second goal is to analyse a particular form of activism -- the street marches and public gatherings commonly known as 'Gay Prides'. In the first chapter I will introduce the subject of political activism in the Czech Republic in general and will then focus further on the mode of activism typical for human-rights organizations. In the second chapter I will analyse the living conditions of homosexuals in the Czech Republic, the possibilities for achieving greater rights, and the forms of activism which have helped to lead to the current situation from the institutional, legislative and personal perspective and I will also consider public opinion on the rights of sexual minorities. The third chapter is about the street marches that have taken place in the Czech Republic and here I will especially focus on the Gay Pride called 'Queer Parade 2008' that took place in 2008 in Brno. This Pride can be considered to be the first ever Pride in the Czech Republic. In the last part of this thesis I will introduce the results of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Czech printed media's response to the Queer Parade 2008.

International Context of The Roma Minority Human Rights Protection in Slovakia

"The Roma Problem"is one of the most serious social problems in Slovakia. Prejudices, bad relationships between non-Roma majority and Roma minority, as well as racism, Roma rights violations are the most frequently cited issues, Slovakia is criticized for. The Government of the Slovak Republic is aware of all reasons for the criticism by international organizations or non-governmental organizations, and that is why "The Roma Problem" solution has been its priority for a long time. The Slovak Republic has already accepted lots of international commitments concerning protection of minority rights (including Roma rights) that is why I have decided to find out if Slovakia meets all its commitments. My goal is to analyse if international commitments and recommendations related to human rights affect real protection of minority rights in Slovakia. I would like to evaluate if the criticism by the international organizations is adequate and find some reasons for the criticism. Last but not least I would like to propose several recommendations based on the analyses of non- governmental organizations.

Situation of Kurds in Turkey and Iraq and its influence on regional development

This bachelor thesis focuses on situation of Kurds in Turkey and Iraq applying to their historical and ethnical context. It concentrates on their definition, characteristics, development, adjusted politics and present movements in reference to Turkey and Iraq because of their highest percentual rate of Kurdish population. The main aim is to analyse and compare their position in relation to majority community from different points of view. The thesis also takes into account the influence of Kurdish question on the Middle East region and attitudes of international actors to solution of Kurdish case especially in relation to human rights and minority policy.
