Josef Karásek (1868-1916) in the context of Czech Slavic Studies and the Czech literary scene in Vienna (On the participation of Vienna in inter-Slavic cultural relations from the founding of the Jagić Seminary to the birth of Czechoslovakia)
Černý, Marcel ; Petrbok, Václav (referee)
This dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part (2. VIENNA AND CZECH LITERATURE) is devoted to the interaction between the city of Vienna and modern Czech culture, primarily literature. The second part (3. VIENNA AND CZECH SLAVIC STUDIES) is oriented toward the problematic of the history of Slavic Studies, the area of Slavic philology which, as a meta-discipline, deals with the self-reflection of its own subject. Specifically, both the initiative of the "Jagić concept" of Slavic philology for Czech Slavic Studies as it was eventually reflected in Karásek's specialized activities and the panoramic outline of the way in which Jagić's work was perceived and absorbed in the Czech surroundings are the subject of consideration. However, this study is not a "classic" monograph in the narrow sense of the word. Josef Karásek, who was a literary historian, editor, translator, and promoter of Slavic literatures in the German-speaking world, was not a central personality in the history of Czech Slavic Studies. Yet on the other hand, considering the rather strong echo of his work in Czech, Viennese and other Slavic research communities, and in spite of the partial research eclecticism of his work, it cannot be said that Karásek was a mere journalist and author of compilations. His extensive estate, which was...

Language and Totalitarianism
Váňa, Tomáš ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Kučera, Jan (referee)
The thesis Language and totalitarianism deals with the relation between these two phenomena. On the basis of key thinkers dealing with totalitarianism it formulates its own definition of totalitarianism. It presents the communication theory of Karl Wolfgang Deutsch, on which basis it points to the close relation between communication and political systems, concretely between language and totalitarianism. Language is analysed mainly on the thoughts of Ferdinand de Saussure and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Totalitarian language is explained using mainly Orwell's totalitarian language newspeak in 1984. A practical analysis of a sample of Rudé právo fram the era of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in the years 1948-1989 shows its manifestations in real use. At the end of the thesis political correctness is introduced as an example of totalitarian tendencies in liberal democracies.

Phenomen of Subcarpathian Ruthenia in Czech interwar literature
Čingl, Pavel ; Mocná, Dagmar (referee) ; Hrabáková, Jaroslava (advisor)
The Subcarpathian Ruthenia entered the Czech literature in the period of the time between the wars after its annexation to Czechoslovakia in 1919. A lot of authors were attracted by this topic (Čapek, Olbracht, Vančura and others). Some of them realized a trip to the Subcarpathian Ruthenia to be able to bring the Czech readers near the life in this region. The Subcarpathian subject matter penetrated a wide spectra of the literary genres (a story, novel, ballad, fairy tale, etc.) The interwar authors novelized various motives from the Subcarpathian Ruthenia - its life, towns, habits, social situation and above all the space of its nature creating not only a background to the human space but also an individual storyline itself (see I. Olbracht). An outstanding connecting feature of the books is a tendency to introduce the Subcarpathian Ruthenia to the Czechoslovak readers. The Subcarpathian world was strange to the Czech readers but the mythical "withouttime" atmosphere effected the reader's perception in a positive way. The relationship between the reality and myth (a synchronical birth of a myth on the base of the reality) was brought to the perfection by Ivan Olbracht. The authors didn't pay attention to the space of the nature only, but to the human space, to an oppressive social situation -leading (in...
