Roaming into the beyond: the theme of immortality in early medieval Chinese verse
Kirkova, Zornica ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Hrdličková, Věnceslava (referee) ; Mittag, Achim (referee)
During the Six Dynasties (220 - 589) there evolved a distinct poetic current of "roaming into immortality" (youxian shi), which is distinguished as a sub-genre of lyrical poetry shi in the 6th century anthology Wenxuan. The youxian shi concern higher realms of nature, inhabited by divine immortal beings, replete with paradisial marvels and ecstatic cosmic flights. Although poetry on immortality was written by the leading poets of the age, it remains even today much neglected in the literary history of the Six Dynasties, having been consciously marginalised by generations of later critics and commentators. And yet, considerations of this "otherworldly" poetic current not only reveal the other, more imaginative and mystic side of Chinese poetic vision, but also allow us to make significant additions to and re-evaluate traditional notions of poetic developments and the meaning of poetry in early medieval China. A major problem in the study of the poems on "roaming into immortality" is the narrow definition of genres on the basis of concrete verse form, whereby the connections between the various forms are largely neglected. This approach, deeply rooted in traditional Chinese literary history, does not allow us to perceive the concrete literary works in the wider context of poetry, or even of literature as...

Smolíková, Miroslava ; Mocná, Dagmar (advisor) ; Brožová, Věra (referee)
The thesis called "Marysa and Anezka. Success and failure of Vilem Mrstik" deals with Marysa, a drama co-written by V. Mrstik and his brother A. Mrstik in 1894, and Anezka, a play finished by V. Mrstik in collaboration with his wife B. Mrstikova in 1912. Both dramatic works are introduced within the literary-historical context and within the personal history of the author. Introduction provides insight into source-books, the most important previous studies of the field and basic propositions around which the thesis revolves. The Marysa part expands the research of M. Ljubkova with information from correspondence between V. Mrstik and L. Stroupeznicky. It also questions the importance of V. Mrstik's inputs to the collective work and analyses premiere and critical reception of the drama, using contemporary reviews. The Anezka part follows genesis of the play with use of correspondence and manuscripts from literary archive of The Museum of Czech Literature (PNP). The genesis includes quotes of V. Mrstik defending the drama. The thesis also describes circumstances of Anezka's premiere and its disappearance from the stage and mentions the probability of guilty conscience that dramaturgist J. Kvapil might have had about V. Mrstik's suicide. Reception of Anezka is depicted with the help of contemporary...

Function of Fanciful Motives in Present Czech Literature for Children
Havlová, Jana ; Brožová, Věra (advisor) ; Klumparová, Štěpánka (referee)
In my thesis paper entitled "The Function of Fanciful Motives in Present Czech Literature for Children" I begin by theoretically exploring the problems of fantasy literature and fantasy motifs. I then discuss the lives and work of various authors and focus on an analysis of their literary works with child heroes and fantasy motifs. I have selected texts for interpretation on the basis of the following conditions: the books are specifically intended for children and adolescents; the stories have a realistic level and the fantasy area is somehow part of this; the fantasy world is logically incorporated into the fictional world corresponding to our everyday experiences and this imaginary world therefore applies to real life; the fantasy motifs serve a specific function; and the fantasy motifs appear as an equal element to the realistic ones. The following works in particular are examined in this thesis paper: Emma and the Magic Book by Petra Braunová, Gabriela's Magic World by Pavel Brycz, The Enchanted Classroom by Ivona Březinová, Lenka and Nelka or AHA by Daniela Fischerová, The Magic Saturdays by Miloš Kratochvíl, Ghosts from Nerudova Street by Ivana Vostřáková and the books Wednesday Tastes Good, The Main Victory, The Owl's Song, Jožin goes to Africa, Eliáš and the Grandma from the Egg, Where has...

The Cognitive and Didactic Potential of Fantasy Literature
Druhá kapitola ukázala nesnadnost vymezení a definice žánru fantasy. Práce se pokusila shrnout dosavadní definice, ukázat jejich výhody i slabiny. Zároveň s tím bylo poukázáno na otevřené hranice žánru a ne vždy jednoznačné vymezení vzhledem k jiným žánrům. Práce vedle sebe položila společné i distinktivní prvky fantasy a dalších fantastických žánrů (sci-fi, horor, kyberpunk). Jako nosnou a pro přesnější koncepci fantasy velmi užitečnou teorii práce představila štrukturalistické pojetí fantasy příběhu podle Johna Cluta. Powered by...
