The concept of historicism in selected works of Alois Jirásek and Zikmund Winter

This diploma thesis deals with contribution of chosen writings by Alois Jirásek and Zikmund Winter. It tries to clarify the term historism and its infiltration into Czech literature, particularly in novels Temno and Mistr Kampanus. The thesis also outlines the period after the Battle of the White Mountain. Its consequences dramatically influenced political, religious, social and cultural conditions in the Czech lands. It defines terms historical novel and historical short story to specify the border between this genre and the other proses of the then time. The practical part gives a concrete form of a complex interpretation of novels Temno and Mistr Kampanus. It introduces a dispute over historism between Alois Jirásek and Zikmund Winter. With the aid of content analysis of chosen readers for primary and secondary schools the thesis finds out the frequency of extracts by mentioned authors in schoolbooks. In closing the thesis focuses on evaluation of searched extracts in readers and mentions also FEP.

Expulsion of Sudetes Germans in 20th century literary fiction

The diploma thesis deals with literary depiction of expulsion of Sudetes Germans in the Czech fiction of the second half of the 20th century. Based on analysis of five novels it describes the influence of the period political ideology shaping the literary depiction of the Germans, the boarder areas of Czechoslovakia, the act of explusion itself, as well as Czech national identity across more than six decades.

The Historical Imagination of Late Enlightenment.

The dissertation deals with the transformations of historiography and perception of the historical time in the last third of 18th and at the beginning of the 19th centuries. The central questions it investigates are: How has the way of locating (Czech) society in time changed? How did representations of past fundamentally change between 1760s and 1820s, in the era of the so-called "Sattelzeit"? What is the relationship between these changes and the way in which history was represented? What impact did the changes of media, book markets, and culture of reading have in this time? What are the political and aesthetic consequences of these changes? The answer to these questions is found in five fundamental innovations of Enlightenment historiography. These innovations (understood according to Niklas Luhmann's system theory in order to reduce complexity) - fundamentally influenced the way in which late Enlightenment thinkers conceptualized the flow of historical time and the praxis of historiography. Adaptation of Alois Jirásek's works in the films of the 1950s

Alois Jirásek (1851 - 1930) was an important Czech writer and author of many historical novels and plays. Jirásek's work has always been very popular. After World War II and the onset of communism in Czechoslovakia Jirasek was promoted to the chief authority in interpreting Czech history. The thesis aims to deal with the second life of Alois Jirásek in the 1950's in the context of filmmaking. This thesis will primarily focus on the films Temno (Darkness, 1950), Psohlavci (The Dog Heads, 1955), Jan Hus (1954), Jan Žižka (1955), Proti všem (Against All, 1956) and Ztracenci (Lost Children, 1956).

Mario Vargas Llosa: The feast of the goat - fiction vs. historical facts

(in English): The Bachelor's Thesis examines Mario Vargas Llosa's novel, The Feast of The Goat. It analyzes the novel from a historical point of view. First part pays attention to the history of Dominican Republic, it focuses on the period of dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, especially on its last years. It examines his politics, cult of his personality and mark that he left in dominican history. The second part compares historical reality with literary presentation by Mario Vargas Llosa. It examines how much the author remains trutful to the historical facts and shows, where he helps himself out with fiction. Further on it analyzes particular characters and clarifies why are they significant to characterize Trujillo and his regime. The final chapter upholds the novel as a historical source, although is is a historical novel.

Art interpretation of Czech history in the historical prose by Alois Jirásek

The thesis deals with the issues of literary-historical situation of works by Alois Jirásek in the Czech tradition of the historical novel and characteristic of literary representation of history by the writer. The thing is that after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 Jirásek became the official symbol of the literature of the new state, and younger authors followed him ideologically, thematically, and after the formal construction of works. Jirásek's authority didn't weaken in the second half of the 20th century, when his method of literary interpretation of Czech history was ideologically misused. On the basis of literary analysis of two historical novels (Proti všem and Temno), the author of thesis describes Jirásek's narrative style and the means of expression that gives the writer the possibility to reach the art effectiveness of his novels. Keywords: Nağīb Maḥfūẓ, egyptian literature, history, symbol, image, egyptology, leader, nationalism, identity This thesis examines the role of the symbols in the three historical novels of Nağīb Maḥfūẓ that take place in the Ancient Egypt. In his return to the history of his nation, he shows people the way to their own identity and explains the contemporary situation in the country by using symbols. We try to prove that his novels renew the traditions and connect the modern Egypt with the legends. We demonstrate on the extracts the intentions of the author, confront his deviation from the historical facts and present reasons which led author to do that. For further comprehension, we give details about the historical novel, egyptology and show the impact of european authors on Nağīb Maḥfūẓ.

Wenceslas II. in classical literature

The subject of this thesis is depiction of Wenceslas II. in historical romances. The main emphasis is on historical point. The theoretical part is focused on general characteristics of reing of Václav the second and his life. In this part there are marked important moments in monarch's life, which occur also in romances. Practical part is dealing with analysis of four historical romances - by Oldřich Daněk, Jiří Hanibal, Jan Lipšanský and Ludmila Vaňková. Analyse is focused mainly on historical inaccuracies and characteristics of main historical personalities. Concluding part contains comparison of all four romances. The aim of this thesis is to show different views of writers to important historical personality, who played considerable role in czech history.
